John Wick Chapter 4 pushed the envelope on stunt performance with the many flinging of bodies every which way. Extraction 2 boldly showed a visceral prison yard riot fight sequence in a one-shot. Tom Cruise did his thing and collaborated with many more brave souls participating in his death-defying stunts in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. This year saw many accomplishments in the popular genre of action and it seems as though the public are giving the hard-working stunt people behind the scenes more and more deserved recognition.

David Leitch and Kelly McCormick’s production and action design company 87North has teamed with Universal Pictures Content Group to make a doc series about Hollywood stunt performers.
Action will follow 87North’s stunt teams at work and tell stories of the performers’ everyday lives and their loves of action sports, martial arts, motocross and other high-octane activities. The six-part show will highlight the highs and lows of working in often-dangerous environments while balancing family life.
it will also feature exclusive behind-the-scenes access to Hollywood movie sets including the upcoming Ryan Gosling starrer The Fall Guy, which Leitch is directing and McCormick producing. Leitch and McCormick are known for features such as Bullet Train.
The series is currently in post-production. Leitch and McCormick are executive producers, working with producers Josh Oreck and Chelsea Allen and director Bridger Nielson. NBCUniversal Global Distribution is handling international sales.
87North, which has its own action design and stunt facility, has worked on action flicks such as Bullet Train, Fast & Furious Present: Hobbs & Shaw, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde, Nobody, Violent Night and John Wick, and has a first-look deal with Universal, through which it recently wrapped production on The Fall Guy.
“My first loves are action films, and the backbone of this genre are the stunt performers who bring their kinetic magic to the screen,” said Leitch, who besides producing and directing was Bradd Pitt’s stunt double. “Kelly and I are excited to finally shine the spotlight on these unsung, unseen heroes of Hollywood and celebrate the stunt community with Acton.”
Helen Parker, EVP of Universal Pictures Content Group, said: “There is absolutely no one better to work with when it comes to stunts and action movies, so we are thrilled that David and Kelly have been willing to secure such unprecedented access into the lives of their incredible teams who are unequivocally the best in the business. This documentary series gives a fascinating insight into the people behind the action; we get to meet some amazing characters and learn about what brought them to Hollywood and what they had to sacrifice in order to achieve success.”
Universal and 87North have several projects in development together, including Kung Fu and Versus. 87North is also working on sequels to Nobody and Violent Night, along with features for Prime Video and Ambling and TV shows.
Universal Pictures Content Group is part of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group and its slate currently includes Sky Sports doc Deadline Day: Football’s Transfer Window, Channel 4 festive season animation Mog’s Christmas and HBO music doc Tina.
