Ken Kleinberg noticed something was wrong during a work trip to the South of France in the late 1990s. The veteran talent lawyer cut his trip short to seek medical treatment, with no clue that his diagnosis would be the beginning of a decades-long journey to eradicate kidney disease. “I had taken on a lot of weight and my body was sort of pudgy,” Kleinberg recalls. “Each day that went by, I was getting more bloated and I could tell that I was retaining fluid. So, I returned to Los Angeles as rapidly as I could.”
His doctor recommended seeing a kidney specialist, but didn’t say much more than that. Then came a kidney biopsy and a series of other tests. The diagnosis was minimal change disease, a condition that impacts kidney function. As the illness progressed, Kleinberg was facing renal failure and underwent dialysis three times a week...

Eis schemes could come back into favour as two producers win significant court cases against tax authorities.
UK funding mechanism Enterprise Investment Scheme (Eis) could re-emerge as a viable tool for low-budget independent film financing following two courtroom victories by film companies against the UK tax authority, Hm Revenue and Customs (Hmrc), which had been trying to clamp down on the practice.
Separate tribunal judges each ruled in favour of Inferno Films Ltd and Cry Me A River Limited, and against Hmrc, in two recent First Tier Tribunal Tax Chamber cases.

Woody Guthrie, the singer, songwriter and writer who spoke truth to power decades before the phrase was invented, was long known to take a political stand. Now, 55 years after his death, he’s still doing just that. As part of a new exhibit of his life and work, he’s joined the list of musicians unhappy with Spotify in light of the company’s affiliation with Joe Rogan’s podcast and his Covid-related opinions and comments.

[Note: With the film finally getting a home entertainment release, here’s a reposting of our review of The Ballad of Billy McCrae from its UK cinema debut last September]
British gangster or small-town British revenge-style movies are a dime a dozen. There are so many of them around, I assume because they are cheap to make and there’s an abundance of actors who will happily star of them. Because of this, it takes something special to stand out from the crowd. Directors like Shane Meadows have taken this idea but elevated it to a whole new level, and that’s hard to do. The Ballad of Billy McCrae and its director doesn’t quite do that but there’s still plenty of interest here.
We are introduced to Chris Blythe. A man who has returned to his home town in Wales with his tail between his legs after losing his fortune in Canada.
