Shyam Benegal's Bhumika (1977) is now showing in the series A Journey into Indian Cinema. When Shyam Benegal was making Bhumika, the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act was in effect in India, which made it practically impossible to import film stock from Kodak. Flix FlashbackIn the 2001 film, featuring a brilliantly nuanced act by Mammootty, director Chandran entwines Dany’s life with political milestones while Dany himself remains isolated.Meera PKYouTube screenshotTV Chandran almost never lets Dany move away from his frame. Yet in the film that revolves around a lone, desolate man, and chronicles his life from youth to old age, it’s interesting how Dany has no character arc. From Gandhi’s salt march to widow remarriage, from the formation of Kerala to the Babri Masjid demolition to Vajpayee’s reign – Chandran entwines Dany’s life with political milestones. Dany himself remains steadily isolated – in thought and action. The characters around him keep evolving, the framework keeps changing. In many ways, he is one of the most wretched sights on celluloid; at no point in his life is he without near and dear ones and yet he is the aimless, lonely man...

From the time the trailers of "Bala" and "Ujda Chaman" dropped on the public domain, the release dates of both the films have been going back and forth. Now that "Bala" finally releases on November 7, one of the leading actresses of the film -- Yami Gautam -- says she was never worried about all the noise around the possible clash of the two films.
Both films are about a young protagonist suffering from premature balding, and the similarity in theme has grabbed eyeballs.

"I was not worried about the release date at all because our producer is the best judge of that. It is hard to get a single window for release, especially in the end of the year when so many films release. When we make a film, we not only invest in hard work but also a lot of money.

Actress Richa Chadha, who is known to be vocal with her opinions, says she has observed how, at times, mainstream and social media tend to scrutinize female stars more than male stars. Although she was criticized by a section of the media in her initial days, she holds all her critics in high regard.
Richa told Ians: "Mainstream media, as well as social media, tends to be unfair towards female stars, and female stars get trolled and criticized more than their male counterparts. I can say this from my observation of the way media constantly questions Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Swara Bhasker, Sonam Kapoor and other female stars for their choices - whether it is fashion, political opinion or lifestyle. Do they question the male stars enough as well?"

With three films and a web series in his kitty, Bollywood actor Prateik Babbar is in a good space in his career. The "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na" fame actor says there is a big shift in his approach towards his work, and so, he does not take any opportunities for granted.
"I was just 19 years old when I did my first film and had no plan to act or to become an actor. It was like a paid holiday so that I could earn good pocket money and then party more with my friends. When I finally found my calling, I started learning and enjoying the craft. Now, I take the process seriously.

There is something supremely sad about a meditation on womanhood and female empowerment gone awry.
Juanita means well. It wants us to enter a black American woman's home and psyche to get to know why she thinks her life as a single mother has snuffed out her real self. We saw a far more credible version of the Black American Dream recently in "If Beale Street Could Talk".
A few months ago, I saw Charlize Theron as a mother going bonkers over her newly born baby. Theron's throbbing angst and bursting bosom blew me away.
Woodard's attempts to make her character's singed existence sing in protest, seems highly misbegotten. Not her fault entirely. The fey script (adapted from the novel "Dancing On The Edge Of The Roof") makes Woodard's gripping mother's part over-stuffed with artistic and emotional baggage.?

Cinema The characters in the remake will deal with the social, political and cultural issues relevant in today’s times. Tnm StaffThe official remake of Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai?, a 1980s cult classic starring Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil is all set to hit the screens on April 12, 2019. A modern take on its original version, the remake features a stellar cast which includes Nandita Das, Manav Kaul and Saurabh Shukla. Much like its original version, the remake which is written and directed by Soumitra Ranade of the Jajantaram Mamantaram fame, will explore the theme of personal and societal struggles in today’s times. The '80s film dealt with the common man’s anger in the face of continued political, social and cultural breakdowns. He is angered by the rampant corruption, the ruling political class and the hypocrisy. But most importantly, he is angry at himself for being powerless.

Padmaavat
Starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
For my money there is no contemporary filmmaker with the vision and velocity of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The man makes every frame in his cinema seem like a wondrous timeless work of art.
As in all his films there are visuals in Padmaavat that will be remembered for all times to come. And this is as opportune a time as any to salute Bhansali’s cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee who is a magician, a visionary par excellence who can put on screen images that poets and painters put into their creations when at the acme of inspiration.
Almost every moment in the story that Bhansali tells of the royal Queen Padmavati and the Islamic invader who lusts after her, is pure magic. The mesmerizing mise en scene hooks you from the...

Om Puri, the veteran of Indian cinema who died on Friday morning at age 66 of an unexpected heart attack, received two National Film Awards, the highest honor an actor can receive in India. The awards are not without their controversies, as one may suspect from awards that are doled out by the national government of India. They have sometimes been accused of favoring Hindi-language films at the expense of regional cinema. As far as Indian awards bodies go, though, the National Film Awards exhibit remarkably prudent taste more often than not. The first of Puri’s National Awards was for Arohan (The Ascending Scale, 1982), by director Shyam Benegal, while the second came for Govind Nihalani’s Ardh Satya (Half Truth, 1983). In the days since Puri’s death, there has been justified focus on his work in Ardh Satya. It gave Puri one of his most definitive roles, and the film...
