A laudable lead performance and some good action sequences elevate this heavy-handed drugs thriller by director Tjebbo Penning
Surely, there must be some contractual reason why this punnet of greasy genre junk-food cinema from the Netherlands is getting a theatrical release in the UK. After all, it’s highly doubtful there will be more of handful of punters interested in seeing it here, unless perhaps a fleet of buses containing Dutch holiday-makers decide to camp next to a multiplex showing it and find themselves with nothing else to do on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Should that happen, they would be rewarded with a committed, laudably nuanced performance from Thekla Reuten as the see-no-evil wife of Jeroen van Koningsbrugge’s middle-management drug dealer. After years of trying to look the other way, Reuten’s Sylvia finally admits to herself that her husband is a violent psychopath whose line of work is...

At Guadalajara’s 14th Market (4-9 March), European Film Promotion worked together with five European sales companies on marketing campaigns of seven European films from five different countries via Film Sales Support (Fss). Fss is backed by the Creative Europe - Media Program of the European Union and facilitates sales of European films to Mexico and other countries in South America. To optimize sales opportunities, Fss encouraged sales agents to hold additional meetings with buyers in their offices in Mexico City after the market. This year, a total of almost €18,000 were reserved for marketing and networking purposes with local and South American distributors and buyers.
The Market, part of the 31th Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara (Ficg, 4-13 March), relocated to Musa, the Museo de las Artes of the University of Guadalajara in the old part of the city. Again, Efp had a European stand at the market’s new venue, offering a base for all participating European professionals. Sales representatives from Film Factory, Media Luna new Films, Taskovski Films, Urban Distribution and Wide attended Guadalajara bringing with them films from Spain, the Czech Republic, Austria, the Netherlands and France. Amongst the films for sale to Mexico are David Serrano’s comedy, "We Need to Talk,"Jakob Brossmann’s documentary, "Lampedusa in Winter" and Tjebbo Penning’s thriller,"Clean Hands." Following Italy, Switzerland is the film festival’s guest country this year.
Fss funding was confirmed by Efp’s member organizations Austrian Films, the Instituto de la Cinematografa y de las Artes Audiovisuales / Icaa (Spain), UniFrance films, Eye International (The Netherlands).
Thanks to Swiss Films, Efp’s member organization, one Swiss film additionally benefited from marketing support in Guadalajara.

Former Oscar winner Mike van Diem’s The Surprise and BBC backed series The White Queen [pictured] are among the recipients in the first funding round from the new Screen Flanders economic fund.
A total amount of €4,995,000 ($6,678,685) is to be distributed in the fund’s inaugural call.
The next call for projects closes on 28 June. The final call for 2013 opens from Sept 1 and closes on Oct 25. Another €5 million will be divided among applicants in both remaining calls.
Sitting alongside the Belgian Tax Shelter, the new fund is bound to boost the region’s appeal for coproduction and inward investment yet further. The aim of the selective system is to support (co-) productions that are made, in part or entirely, in the Flanders region. One of the conditions is that the project spends a minimum of €250,000 ($334,205) in the region. The 20 supported titles together stand for well over €20 million ($26,7m)of audiovisual expenses in the Flanders region.

Dutch director Tjebbo Penning tells the story of a man who travels to NY City on a quest to track down his ex-wife and mother to his mentally handicapped son. On one hand a very intimate family drama and on the other a ode to the mythic scale of New York seen through a foreigner's eyes.
Great Kills Road has received a couple of positive Dutch reviews from film fests, but that's it. We've heard a lot about the film, but until this trailer arrived haven't seen much.
At first the trailer feels like a documentary what with the way it's filmed. However it isn't. By the end of the footage the tone shifts and the camera becomes more omniscient. I think it works, despite not knowing too many details. The tagline "sometimes doing what's best isn't always right," is certainly intriguing.
Watch the first trailer for Great Kills Road after the break.
