Before Aerosmith made it big, the band opted for some interesting techniques in the recording studio. While it’s common for musicians to use non-traditional instruments on a track, Aerosmith’s creative recording of “Sweet Emotion” takes the cake. Even the band’s biggest fans could have never guessed the inventive way Steven Tyler utilized a sugar packet in the classic rock hit.

Veteran hard-rock act Extreme have announced their first new studio album in 15 years. The band’s sixth LP overall is appropriately titled Six, and features the just-released raw rocker “Rise” as the first single.
Extreme — featuring Gary Cherone (vocals), Nuno Bettencourt (guitar), Pat Badger (bass), and Kevin Figueiredo (drums) — will release Six on June 9th via earMUSIC.
“Musically, it’s aggressive,” Cherone stated of “Rise.” “Lyrically, it’s a cautionary tale on the rise and fall of fame. You get seduced into it. Once you’re on top, they’ll rip you apart and tear you down. That’s the nature of the beast.”
“When Eddie Van Halen passed, it really hit me,” Bettencourt added. “I’m not going to be the one who will take the throne, but I felt some responsibility to keep guitar playing alive. So, you hear a lot of fire on the record.”

Within hours of the news of his death, tributes to Jeff Beck from the guitar greats rang out like a 21-string salute. “Jeff could channel music from the ethereal… his technique unique, his imaginations apparently limitless,” said Jimmy Page of this “six-string warrior” and “the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions”. Jeff Beck “was punk rock before punk existed,” declared The Edge. “The Salvador Dali of the guitar,” said Aerosmith’s Joe Perry; “an infinite source of joy,” claimed Stevie Van Zandt; an innovator, pioneer and profound influence, stated Dave Gilmour, Steve Hackett, Johnny Marr and Joe Satriani. The phrase “guitarist’s guitarist”, which could have been coined for Beck, had never felt more apposite.
But while the epithet honours Beck’s groundbreaking virtuoso skills – the liquid lines, ricochet riffs, mystical tones, feedback experiments and innovative techniques that stunned his fans and contemporaries – it underplays his significance and...

Rock’n’roll musicians have a habit of thinking of themselves like secular gods, but the truth is they’re not infallible. No matter how successful a band may or may not have been in the past, there’s never any guarantee their next record will live up to the heights they’ve previously scaled. Sometimes, everything that once went right just all goes wrong.
There are often extenuating circumstances, of course. Band members may leave due to death, drugs or just good old-fashioned “musical differences”, or an ambitious new direction may turn out to be more like a swerve into oncoming traffic.
Whatever the cause, the fact remains that just because an album has the name of a classic band slapped across the cover, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the album itself will be a classic.

Aerosmith have donated a pair of new Community Emergency Vehicles to the Red Cross to help serve Florida communities hit by the recent Hurricanes, Ian and Nicole, joining an effort to help those who will be impacted by future storms.
The two 2023 Chevrolet Silverados, emblazoned with the Aerosmith logo, will be delivered in the spring of 2023. Guitarist Joe Perry, a resident of Sarasota, Florida, said he and his bandmates were “devastated by the disastrous impact of Hurricane Ian,” which killed an estimated 119 people when it made landfall in late September.

The rock supergroup – which consists of Alice Cooper, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and Depp – were previously forced to cancel their 2020 tour due to the pandemic.

Describing themselves as the “best bar band in the world”, the Hollywood Vampires formed in 2012. They’re named after The Hollywood Vampires club, which was a celebrity hot spot formed by Cooper in the 1970s.
Cooper explained how it had been difficult to get the tour scheduled due to members’ clashing schedules.

Olivia Rodrigo joined Billy Joel on stage for a surprise performance of her hit single “Deja Vu” and his 1983 track “Uptown Girl.”
On Wednesday (24 August), Joel welcomed Rodrigo to perform with him during his Madison Square Garden concert in New York City.
Rodrigo came out wearing a black top, a brown patterned skirt, and black leather boots as she performed “Deja Vu,” which references both Joel and “Uptown Girl.”
“Hey, guys! Thank you so much for having me, Billy,” Rodrigo said. “I’m such a huge fan, and I kind of wrote this next song about you.”
The lyrics of “Deja Vu” goes: “And I bet that she knows Billy Joel/ ’Cause you played her “Uptown Girl”/ You’re singin’ it together/ Now I bet you even tell her how you love her/ In between the chorus and the verse.”

Joe Perry is remembering the father of rock and roll, Chuck Berry, who died on Saturday at age 90.
Looking back, the Aerosmith guitarist says he credits Berry for influencing him as a young musician.
“Some of the first licks you learn are Chuck Berry licks,” Perry told People. “You’re captured by rock n’ roll, and when I heard Chuck Berry it was perfect.”
“It can’t get any better than that,” continued Perry, 66. “Then to be able to sit down and that first time you can actually play along to Chuck Berry songs—that’s like the key that unlocks the door.

The video game industry was going through some exciting changes in the 1990s, with greatly improved graphics and the potential for more complex, involved storytelling. Robert De Niro, for one, was intrigued enough to create a division of his production company called Tribeca Interactive to explore the possibilities of the medium. Eric Grundhauser tells the story of that division’s utterly bizarre yet memorable first project in a piece for Atlas Obscura called “Exploring The Last Resort, Robert De Niro’s Forgotten ’90s Adventure Game.” Produced by De Niro and boasting a star-studded voice cast (including Cher, Jim Belushi, Christopher Reeve, Anne Heche, and Ellen DeGeneres), 9: The Last Resort was a highly stylized, wildly artsy, and sometimes nightmarish variation on the classic adventure/puzzle game Myst. The player inherits a strange, decrepit hotel but must evict a pair of unwanted residents, played by Joe Perry and Steven Tyler of...

Massachusetts grindcore band Trap Them is getting their largest bump in visibility this week thanks to the fact that lead vocalist Ryan McKenney apparently broke both feet in a leap from a speaker cabinet Saturday night and finished the band’s set. (The next evening, he performed â. with two black eyes and casts on both feet â. from an office chair, possibly because a wheelchair was deemed not metal enough.)
If McKenney can take any solace in his injuries, though, it’s in the fact that he’s hardly alone. Many musicians have been injured falling from the stage,...
