One of Canada’s most beloved TV series is returning – in animated form — to mark the 50th anniversary of “The Beachcombers”.
On Oct. 4, a press release was issued announcing that industry veterans Blair Peters and Nick Orchard have teamed up for a new animated version of “The Beachcombers”, which aired 387 episodes over the course of 18 seasons.
“We are super excited to bring these iconic Canadian characters to a whole new audience”, says Peters, best known for his work on such made-in-Canada animated fare as “Yvon of the Yukon”, “Being Ian” and “Kid vs Kat”.

TORONTO -- Canadian producer DHX Media said Tuesday that it will acquire Vancouver-based cartoon producer Studio B Prods. in a deal worth as much as CAN$20 million ($19.8 million).
Halifax-based DHX said it will pay an initial CAN$8 million ($7.9 million) to Studio B co-founders Blair Peters and Chris Bartleman. Under a complex formula, the total purchase price for Studio B is defined as 4.5 times average EBITIDA in the 2007 and 2008 financial years, up to a maximum of CAN$20 million.
In the kids programming segment, DHX Media already owns and operates rival family series producers Halifax Film and Decode Entertainment.
Privately-owned Studio B is best known for its "Kid vs. Kat", "Ricky Sprocket, Showbiz Boy!" and "Martha Speaks" for the U.S.-based WGBH channel.
Studio B also has about 400 half-hours of kids content in its library, and operates a digital and classical animation studio in Vancouver.
Michael Donovan, DHX Media chairman and CEO, said content from Studio B will be directed into his parent company's distribution pipeline and library.

TORONTO -- Canadian animation producer Studio B Prods. on Monday said it had sold Yakkity Yak, a co-production with Australian producer Kapow Pictures, to Nickelodeon channels in the United States, Britain, Australia, Latin America and Europe. The deal with Nickelodeon Worldwide will see Yakkity Yak, a 26-episode, half-hour series for 8-to-12-year-olds about an aspiring teenage comedian named Yak, debut on Nickelodeon U.S. and elsaewhere early next year. "We are extremely confident that this show will work for Nickelodeon channels around the world because of its high production values and humor," Kathleen Hricik, executive vp international program enterprises at MTV Networks International, said in a statement. The Canada-Australia co-production is produced in Flash animation and will also air on Teletoon, Canada's cable animation channel. Mark Gravas, co-owner of Sydney-based Kapow Pictures, created the cartoon series, while executive producer Blair Peters led the animation production at Vancouver, British Columbia-based Studio B.
