The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

Tim Blake Nelson is ready to put his dukes up for Bang Bang, an upcoming boxing drama from director Vincent Grashaw. Written by Will Janowitz (The Sopranos), the story focuses on Bernard “Bang Bang” Rozyski (Nelson), a disgruntled, retired boxer in charge of caring for his grandson. Joining Nelson for Grashaw’s hard-hitting drama are Glenn Plummer, Andrew Liner, Erica Gimple, Nina Arianda, Daniella Pineda, and Kevin Corrigan.
“This project hits the most personal to me. I grew up loving the sport of boxing, but the script tackled elements I hadn’t seen before in a movie; the aftermath of a troubled fighter’s career,” said Grashaw. “I found it an incredibly moving, tragic story,...

You’ve probably seen Glen Plummer in something and instantly recognize him even if you can’t place what you’ve seen him in since he’s been around in the last few decades. A lot of times he plays a very vocal individual that can be controversial or wise depending on his character since he’s played the villain a time or two and the individual that’s there for the main actors when he needs to be. He actually had a funny role in the movie Funny Farm playing along with Mike Starr, as the two of them played furniture movers that were seeking

Exclusive: Matthew Modine has thrown his hat into the ring as a candidate for president of SAG-AFTRA. Modine, a member of the union’s local and national boards of directors, is running at the top of the Membership First ticket, the self-styled progressive wing of the union that promises more democracy and transparency — which the union’s loyal opposition says is in short supply. Marc Webb goes from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to Gifted, starring Chris Evans. Here's our review...
When the moment comes for Chris Evans to put down Captain America's shield, we'll be sorry to see the back of one of the best big screen superhero portrayals ever. But Marvel's loss will be cinema's gain, going by the interesting projects he's chosen between his more red, white and blue escapades. In Gifted, he's put whatever blockbuster clout he may have behind a project that deserves it, and the result is one of the year's nicest surprises.
Evans plays Frank Adler, a boat mechanic who lives in Florida with his seven-year-old niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) and a one-eyed rescue cat called Fred. Mary is a child prodigy who immediately captures the attention of her first-grade teacher Bonnie (Jenny Slate) with her advanced grasp of maths.

He’s shot two Star Wars films, he’s in the middle of shooting a Pacific Rim sequel, and worked with James Ponsoldt and Kathryn Bigelow on new features. "You're out there on stage, hoping on a spot, someone gets in your way - step on 'em." Pathe is planning a 4K restoration re-release of the cult classic, critically-panned film from Paul Verhoeven that killed his career in Hollywood - Showgirls. To announce the upcoming re-release in theaters as well as on Blu-ray and VOD, they've unveiled a new trailer for the film which starred Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle Maclachlan, Gina Gershon, Glenn Plummer and Robert Davi. Showgirls actually received the "Nc-17" rating for "nudity and erotic sexuality throughout", perhaps because Verhoeven was given final cut after the success of Basic Instinct and didn't hold back, and it bombed at the box office. This trailer is obviously Nsfw with nudity throughout, but that should be expected. Perhaps there are a few devoted Verhoeven fans out there. Here's the new restored re-release trailer for Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls, direct from Pathe's YouTube: Nomi,...

Simply put, cult classics aren’t made, they’re born. They’re not designed with the intention of becoming hits on the home video or midnight movie markets, they just exist as sincere creative expressions that happen to catch on with audiences and critics after in its initial theatrical run. Case in point: In 1995, director Paul Verhoeven released his erotic drama “Showgirls,” starring Elizabeth Berkeley as a street-smart hitchhikers who heads to Las Vegas to climb the ropes from stripper to showgirl. While she’s there, she’s introduced to the seedy underbelly of the dancing world and comes face to face with marginalization, violence, and exploitation. The film also stars Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”), Gina Gershon (“Bound”), Glenn Plummer (“Speed”), Robert Davi (“Die Hard”), and more.

While you’ll have to wait seven extra months to see John Boyega back in the Star Wars universe as Rian Johnson‘s Episode VIII has been delayed to December 15th, 2017, you’ll definitely see him on screen before than. One of our most-anticipated films of the year, The Circle, is expected to arrive this fall, and he also has a hold-over from 2014’s Sundance Film Festival that’s now looking for distribution in a post-Episode VII world.
Imperial Dreams is “based on a young troubled writer who has to struggle in the imperial courts projects while single handedly raising his son,” Boyega said on Instagram. “This is an important story, I’m glad it’s being told and I’m really excited for you guys to see this.” Directed by Malik Vitthal, the first trailer has now landed today and it looks like a strong drama, with distribution hopefully to follow.

Sundance Institute today announced the films and music acts that will headline the Sundance Next Fest summer festival August 7-10 in Los Angeles. Next Fest, headquartered at the Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, celebrates the intersection of film and music and the renegade spirit of independent artists. Tickets ($15-25) go on sale to Sundance Institute members today and all others tomorrow at sundance.org/next
In addition to a 10th Anniversary screening of "Napoleon Dynamite" with Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as the festival’s kickoff event on August 7, Next Fest will present the Los Angeles premieres of six films that first screened at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, and offer unfettered creativity and fresh perspectives. The program features a zombie love story, an Iranian-set vampire movie, a modern tale of buried treasure, a thriller about a mysterious soldier, and films that explore the perils of artistic ambition amongst gang life in Watts and the literary world of New York respectively.
Each film screens once at the Theatre at Ace Hotel August 8-10 and will be paired with either a special music act that shares a complementary artistic sensibility or conversations that bring together filmmakers with those who inspired them. The Sundance Film Festival programming staff selected the films and music acts for Next Fest.
The festival is an extension of the popular Next <=> section at the Sundance Film Festival, which showcases stylistically adventurous and bold films, and builds on the Institute’s Next Weekend event, hosted in 2013.
John Cooper , Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “Next Fest is a continuation of our efforts to connect film-loving audiences with the next generation of independent filmmakers. The unique convergence of film and music enhances the experience of each and offers fresh insight into the talent and vision of these outstanding independent artists.”
Trevor Groth , Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In the heart of one of the most creative cities in the world, Next Fest will launch a new wave of film and music talent into the artistic atmosphere. The Theatre at Ace Hotel, with its roots in cinematic trailblazing, will serve as the ideal hub for this cultural adventure.”
Sundance Institute members have access to a host of benefits related to Next Fest, including the ability to purchase tickets today, before they go on sale to the general public tomorrow. At the August 7 screening with Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, members will enjoy a reserved seating section and receive an exclusive tote bag, screenprinted live at the event by Hit + Run. Members are also invited to a special party during Next Fest and are eligible to win a prize package including a three-night stay at the Ace Hotel plus airfare. For more information visit Here

Screenwriter Graham Yost, now the showrunner of FX’s Justified, admits that the plot of Speed sounds ridiculous: A bomb on a bus will detonate if the bus travels below 50 mph. But when the movie was released June 10, 1994, a funny thing happened: It became a hit with moviegoers and critics alike. To quote EW’s grade-a review: “The film takes off from formula elements – it’s yet another variation on Die Hard – but it manipulates those elements so skillfully, with such a canny mixture of delirium and restraint, that I walked out of the picture with the rare sensation that...

I know that the Sundance Film Festival ended over a week ago, but in the six days I was at Sundance (and on screeners in the days before), I saw 25 movies. I wrote full reviews for 13 of them. My Full Sundance reviews: 'The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz' "The Overnighters" "Rudderless" "Fed Up" "Marmato" "Love Child" "Land Ho!" "The Voices" "Happy Valley" "My Prairie Home" "Life Itself" "Mitt" "Web Junkie" But that left 12 movies that I just didn't have the time to write my usual 1000-to-1750 words on. Since getting back from Park City, I've been slowly working my way through capsule reviews for those 12 movies. These are roughly the length of my Take Me To The Pilots entries, which means that in this format, people are going to complain about all of the text and the lack of paragraphs. Sorry. Because I'm just one part of HitFix's awesome Sundance team,...

It was another great year at the Sundance Film Festival! There were so many fantastic movies shown, and I still have a couple more to go. I'm really happy to say that Miles Teller and J.K. Simmon's film Whiplash took home the top two prizes, winning the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. This was my number one favorite film from the festival, and it seems like everyone else at the festival loved it too, so it doesn't surprise me that it won.
Here's the full list of winners:

It’s hard to believe that John Singleton’s generation-defining film Boyz n the Hood came out 23 years ago, in 1991, introducing audiences to a part of Los Angeles that’s a world away from Hollywood. It’s even harder to believe that South Central is still just as hard a place to live and thrive now as it was then. Malik Vitthal’s first feature, Imperial Dreams, which grew out of a Sundance Lab project and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this week, aims to tell a modern story of hope amidst the gang-ridden streets of Watts, and it largely succeeds.

"What's your dream? Owning whores?" And thus, there was Showgirls 2: Penny’s from Heaven. Billed as a parody sequel to Paul Verhoeven's hilarious and sleazy 1995 film starring Elizabeth Berkley as a stripper turned Vegas dancer (and part-time epileptic dolphin — Nsfw), part deux focuses on Rena Riffel's character from the first film, Penny (in case that glorious title didn't give it away). In writer/director Jason Horton's latest genre flick Monsters in the Woods, we follow a low-budget film crew that treks deep into the wilderness in order to shoot some cliché horror scenes for their unsellable indie-drama.
However, they soon find themselves in the midst of their own horror show as they are hunted by real monsters who chase down and devour the cast and crew one by one.
Since the film was recently released by Osiris Entertainment on DVD, Dread Central caught up with Horton to hear more on how his own real-life frustrations as a director inspired Monsters in the Woods, managing a huge ensemble story on a smaller budget and what's next for the up-and-coming independent filmmaker.
Check out our interview with Horton below, and make sure to check back here every day this March for more of Dread Central's Indie Horror Month coverage.

Monsters in the Woods (2012)In the market for a creature feature of an entirely different variety? Step into writer/director Jason Horton’s faux documentary “Monsters in the Woods”, a film that takes yet another stab at lampooning the ridiculously evil movie industry. Glenn Plummer (“South Central”) stars as Jayson, an ill-tempered director who is being forced by his producer to shoot some raunchy additional footage for his otherwise tasteful and artistically sound genre-related endeavor. And just when you’ve had enough of the film’s movie-related satire, an earthquake unleashes a legion of blood-thirsty monsters upon the unsuspecting cast and crew. Thankfully, carnage ensues. As long as you’re willing to sit through about 30 minutes of expletive-laden rants and premature ejaculations, Jason Horton’s thoroughly enjoyable tale of Hollywood dissension and otherworldly monsters is smart, well-written, and delivers plenty of monster-related mayhem. In other words, “Monsters in the Woods...
