Exclusive: The Easterseals Disability Film Challenge has created the first-ever disability loop group, launched with a recent Edfc workshop held on then Sony studio lot that included coaching, feedback and advice from animation executives. Sony Pictures Entertainment has been a key sponsor and host of Edfc for six years.
A loop group is a group of actors involved in recording audio for edited programming during post-production. Loop groups provide background noise and audio clips that enrich the soundscape and lend a sense of authenticity in films, TV shows, video games and commercials.
The initiative follows the casting of Edfc founder and director Nic Novicki as Lego Spider-Man and longtime Film Challenge participant Danielle Perez as Sun-Spider in Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation’s Oscar-nominated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Both Perez and Novicki are actors with disabilities who were recommended for their roles in the film by writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller,...

Though it received a Best Picture nomination at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, Guillermo del Toro's re-adaptation of the William Lindsay Gresham novel "Nightmare Alley" hit theaters the same day as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and was overshadowed by that movie's juggernaut success amid the pandemic. It makes the most of those shadows, though, filling them with smoke and "the poetry of disillusionment and existentialism," as del Toro has called it. This is a movie that lives at the carnival, where you're less likely to see any spider-men and more likely to see a woman with a spider's body warning children about the sins of lust and pride.
Co-written by Kim Morgan, the del Toro version of "Nightmare Alley" takes its cues from Gresham's book and was not intended as a remake of the black-and-white 1947 adaptation starring Tyrone Power. However, that movie is a classic and it's worth...

This article contains spoilers for both versions of Nightmare Alley.
“Mister, I was made for it,” versus “Mister, I was born for it,” sums up the major psychological distinction between the 1947 Nightmare Alley and Guillermo del Toro’s 2021 remake. Neither line from the end of their respective movies is in the 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham. That book concludes just short of the revelation or confession (depending on the actor who says it). Bradley Cooper’s Stan Carlisle finds it downright hilarious that he is about to become a geek. Tyrone Power’s The Great Stanton only grants himself temporary clemency. The geek is their destiny. Chicken necks are their shared fate.
The first major difference between the two movies is the most obvious. One employs all the tricks of black and white filmmaking, the other shades its colors in a muted noir. The next immediately recognizable difference comes at feeding time.

Searchlight Pictures has released the brand-new trailer for director Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley.
When charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival, he crafts a golden ticket to success, using this newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society. With the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who might be his most formidable opponent yet.

The filmmaker is best known for Hellboy, Pacific Rim and Crimson Peak as well as his Academy Award-winning fantasy films Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. Willem Dafoe is set to join Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Rooney Mara in director Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming film Nightmare Alley.
The movie is based on the 1946 novel which tells the story of an “ambitious young con-man who hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more corrupt than he is. At first, they enjoy success fleecing people with their mentalist act, but then she turns the table on him, out-manipulating the manipulator.”
Dafoe will play “the head barker at a traveling carnival who gives Bradley Cooper’s character a job, ushering him into a world of show biz and grifting.” I love Dafoe, and it’s great to see him jump on board a Del Toro movie!
When previously talking about the movie, Del Toro described it as “just a straight, really dark story.” When asked if he could tease anything about the movie, the filmmaker...

Rooney Mara has joined the cast of Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley. The actress has previously been rumored to be in talks to jump on board, but it is now official. The upcoming movie reunites Mara with her Carol co-star Cate Blanchett, who joined the project at the beginning of August. Bradley Cooper is taking the lead in Nightmare Alley as Stan Carlisle, a con artist who falls in love with a female psychiatrist. However, things aren't exactly what they seem as Stan has the tables turned on him.
Rooney Mara is playing Molly, "the closest thing to Bradley Cooper's Stan's true love as they take the act they learned from a circus in Chicago on the road." In addition to Mara, Cooper, and Cate Blanchett, Nightmare Alley also stars Toni Collette, Ron Perlman, and Mark Povinelli, with Michael Shannon and Richard Jenkins still in talks to join Guillermo...

Guillermo del Toro has been hard at work putting together his next film project Nightmare Alley, which has previously been described as a psychological horror thriller.
We also know that the film will be based on the 1946 novel about an “ambitious young con-man who hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more corrupt than he is. At first, they enjoy success fleecing people with their mentalist act, but then she turns the table on him, out-manipulating the manipulator.”
Del Toro is known for playing around with supernatural elements in his films, but in a recent interview with Collider, the filmmaker said that this movie will not have any of that. He describes it as “Just a straight, really dark story.” When asked if he could tease anything about the movie, the filmmaker said:

There may be no director more embedded in Film Twitter than Guillermo del Toro, who expresses his adoration for cinema–from gems both beloved and lost to history, to championing modern directors from all of the world. So, it should be no surprise, that word has it he’s staging a reunion of the stars from one of Film Twitter’s most enduring favorites, Todd Haynes’ Carol.
With Bradley Cooper set to lead the director’s reimagining of the William Lindsay Gresham-penned Nightmare Alley (which Edmund Goulding turned into a 1947 film) as con man Stanton ‘Stan’ Carlisle, Cate Blanchett has now come on board the film, according to Variety. Collider then broke the news of the impressive supporting cast he’s eying to lock down, including Blanchett’s Carol co-star Rooney Mara, as well as Toni Collette, Richard Jenkins, Willem Dafoe, Michael Shannon, Ron Perlman, and Mark Povinelli.

Guillermo del Toro is getting ready to film his next movie, a new adaptation of Nightmare Alley, and the filmmaker is lining up a stacked cast. Originally, Leonardo DiCaprio was being eyed for the lead role. However, that didn't pan out. Instead, Bradley Cooper, coming hot off of his directorial debut A Star is Born, which he also starred in and earned a Best Actor nomination for, is taking on that part. Now, we have word on who is going to be joining him, and Cate Blanchett is on the list. Amazingly, that's just the tip of the iceberg.
According to a new report, Cate Blanchett (Thor: Ragnarok), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Willem Dafoe (Aquaman), Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Michael Shannon (The Current War) and Mark Povinelli (Water for Elephants) are all in talks to join the cast.

Awards season is upon us once again and as has appropriately been the case for the past few years, it will be dominated by talk of diversity. We have made great strides in this arena, and yet I feel one group seems to have been conspicuously left behind — the disability community. Although 20% of our population identifies as disabled, with over a billion dollars in spending power, we are noticeably under-represented on screen. Perhaps this invisibility is why a film like “My Dinner With Hervé” has resonated so deeply within my community.
Since the film’s release, as president of Little People of America, the largest support organization for people with dwarfism in the world, I have been overwhelmed by the positive reactions to the film. It has been satisfying to hear from so many that one of our stories is finally being told with a real voice.

Peter Dinklage remembers when Hervé Villechaize’s star began to rise in Hollywood.
“I felt like everybody did — especially somebody of my size — to be honest, as a young, angry gentleman, I was in judgment of the man. Why would he take these roles that sort of seem to be side-kicky and demeaning?” Dinklage told Variety on Thursday at the premiere of HBO’s new biopic “My Dinner With Hervé.” “Then when you get to know who he was … there’s more to the story.”
The “Game of Thrones” Emmy winner stars in “My Dinner With Hervé” as the late actor in a story inspired by the time director Sacha Gervasi was a journalist sent to interview Villechaize, 25 years ago for the “Mail on Sunday.” The journalist (named Danny Tate in the film) is played by Jamie Dornan.

Susan ("Desperately Seeking Susan") Seidelman has spent her Aarp-eligible years making movies for that oft-ignored corner of the filmgoing public -- her Aarp-eligible peers. She tries her best to give a little R-rated edge to an audience that is too often served warmed-over mush.
So "Boynton Beach Club" was a retirement community romantic comedy that was as frank about sex as any movie Dyan Cannon made in the '70s. And Seidelman's latest, "The Hot Flashes," squeezes in a sex scene and plenty of ribald remarks in between heaping helpings of formulaic sports comedy cheese.
It's a "Best of Times" about menopausal ex-high school basketball players who take on the current crop of state champ teens in their small Texas town, all in the name of saving the local mammogram-mobile. And the movie is a golden opportunity for actresses who have hit Hollywood's "hard-to-employ" age to try their hands at Southern-fried wisecracks.

It's closing time for Chelsea and her pals. NBC has decided to cancel the low-rated sitcom Are You There, Chelsea? after 12 episodes and one season.
Based on a book by Chelsea Handler, Are You There, Chelsea? follows the life of an opinionated and unapologetic young woman (Laura Prepon) who lives life to the fullest as a cocktail waitress. She's many things to many people -- friend, daughter, sister, and sexually dynamic "advanced drinker." Others in the cast include Lenny Clarke, Lauren Lapkus, Jake McDorman, Mark Povinelli, Ali Wong, and (occasionally) Chelsea Handler.
The sitcom had a decent start -- registering a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.18 million viewers -- but things went downhill from there.
Subsequent episodes of Chelsea saw big drops in the ratings and, over the course of the season, went as low as...

He may be the star of the new Snow White adaptation, but Povinelli's dwarfism means he's fighting for varied roles
In his hotel room in New Orleans, Mark Povinelli is reflecting upon the sort of scripts he receives. "They're usually obnoxious. I flick through to what page I'm going to be on and … 'Oh look! Biting someone on the ankle! Or punching someone in the balls!' … The trick is to be one step ahead of them. You can't just say, 'I don't like this', you have to come up with an idea that is better. And that's the real challenge – an extra added task that a lot of average actors don't have to deal with. Not only do you have to be a good performer, but you have to come up with better material than you're given a lot of times, to allow yourself to sleep at night."

New Mirror Mirror movie delivered kidlike fun, storyline seemed very flat & more. Relativity Media released their half-baked Snow White flick "Mirror Mirror" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and,in my personal opinion,it was very, very flat. However, I think that it is good for the kids. I think that's what they were shooting for. If it wasn't,they really messed up. I can't believed this movie was ever being compared to the upcoming "Snow White and the Huntsman" flick with Kristen Stewart. It won't even compare, plus it's for a more adult audience. Mirror Mirror stars: Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, Robert Emms, Mare Winningham, Michael Lerner, Mark Povinelli, Jordan Prentice, Danny Woodburn, Sebastian Saraceno, Ronald Lee Clark, Martin Klebba, Joey Gnoffo, and Sean Bean. In the flick, the evil queen (Julia Roberts) took over the kingdom, once Snow White's (Lily Collins) father went missing,...

I find it absolutely impossible not to be drawn in by Tarsem Singh's visuals. The guy knows how to paint an optical feast and on the heels of Immortals, The Fall and The Cell, his kid-targeted Snow White tale, Mirror Mirror, is no different. And as far as general audiences are concerned, it may to be his most accessible feature yet.
Accompanying all its scenic splendor, Mirror Mirror is an innocent, farcical take on the story of Snow White without devolving into annoying slapstick. As far as I can tell it seems to hit most of the typical plot points of an evil queen attempting to kill the "fairer" princess who eventually falls in love with the dashing prince, enter the seven dwarfs and yadda, yadda, yadda... the end. When it comes to the story, you're already lockstep and in line. Having never read the classic Grimm brothers' fairy...

Title: Mirror Mirror Directed By: Tarsem Singh Starring: Julia Robert, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane, Jordan Prentice, Mark Povinelli, Joe Gnoffo, Danny Woodburn, Sebastian Saraceno, Martin Klebba, Ronald Lee Clark In Tarsem Singh I still trust. No, his films may not be the best of the best, but you can always count on Singh to wholly embrace whatever he’s working on, push the limits and, in turn, make it his own. In the vain of the beloved fairytale, Mirror Mirror tells the story of Snow White (Lily Collins). "Mirror Mirror" is the latest in a long line of Snow White stories -- "Once Upon A Time" on ABC is ongoing, as is the saga of Snow White and her Fabletown cohorts in the graphic novel series "Fables," with the film "Snow White and the Huntsman" not far behind. The Tarsem Singh-directed film, however, is the most kid-friendly of the bunch, with the evil queen character played for laughs by Julia Roberts. Even if this film only has a touch of the dark side, its stars Lily Collins and Armie Hammer insist "Mirror Mirror" is more modern, because Snow White learns to fight for herself, her prince, and her people. "Our Snow White has no huntsman," Hammer noted, "but it's an over-the-top family comedy. We're not trying to make 'Grapes of Wrath' here." And because it's a Singh film, the visuals are everything, as the two leads and...

The best roles on television for people of short stature are those in which dwarfism takes a back seat. In the new show, Are You There, Chelsea? Mark Povinelli plays Todd, a supporting character on the show who works at a sports bar. I've watched only two episodes, but, compared to portrayals in popular culture that objectify little people because of their physical appearance, Todd appears to be one of the better roles for people of short stature. Like the rest of the cast, Todd is in search of a laugh, a good time and some comfort. He just happens to be a dwarf. He understated presence of dwarfism on Are You There, Chelsea? underscores the irony of Chelsea Handler's Feb. 8 appearance on The Rosie Show. Characters such as Povinelli's and Peter Dinklage's recent honors on the Emmys and Golden Globes have delivered a message that people with dwarfism,...
