London, March 3 (Ians) Amid safety concerns, short video platform TikTok has launched a Safety Advisory Council for Europe to rope in external experts for addressing content moderation issues.
The move follows reports by EU consumer protection agencies accusing TikTok of breaching consumer protection and privacy rules, including child safety-specific concerns, TechCrunch reported on Tuesday.
The death of a girl in Italy who reportedly participated in a "black-out" challenge on the platform in January also sparked controversy.
TikTok said that the Safety Advisory Council for Europe will bring together leaders from academia and civil society from all around Europe.
"Each member brings a different, fresh perspective on the challenges we face and members will provide subject matter expertise as they advise on our content moderation policies and practices," TikTok said in a statement.

New Irish feature film The Guarantee starring Love/Hate’s Peter Coonan, David Murray (Amber), Orla Fitzgerald (The Wind That Shakes The Barley), Morgan C. Jones (Vikings), and Gary Lydon (Calvary) will be hitting Irish cinemas on Thursday October 30th with a special live event to kick off the release. The first of its kind in Ireland, the live event screening will allow cinema audiences across the country to watch the film and take part in an interactive panel discussion and Q&A hosted by Today FM’s Matt Cooper live from Movies@Dundrum. Based on Colin Murphy’s stage play Guaranteed!, directed by Ian Power (The Runway) and produced by John Kelleher Media in association with the Bai, the Irish Film Board and TV3, The Guarantee recreates the drama surrounding the most significant political decision in modern Irish history when the Irish government decided to guarantee the entire domestic banking system.

New feature film The Guarantee, produced by John Kelleher Media in association with TV3, the Irish Film Board and the Bai is currently shooting in Dublin this week. Wildcard Distribution will bring the feature to Irish cinemas this autumn with a broadcast on TV3 scheduled for November. Directed by Ian Power (The Runway), the feature film recreates the drama surrounding the most significant political decision in modern Irish history when the Irish government decided to guarantee the entire domestic banking system. It’s the first time the story has been told on the big screen and charts the origins of that pivotal decision (four years before that fateful night), and follows developments through the peak of the boom to the beginning of the bust. As much as we’d like it too, it probably won’t feature a bunch of politicians and bankers being fed to a pride of starving lions.

Inspired by a true story, this Disneyish sally to the crash site that spawned a miracle lacks the muscle of reality. Emerging director Ian Power takes a conservative approach in writing and directing this heart warmer from the warmest of all places, Country Cork, Ireland. Inspired by the true story of a South American pilot who crash-landed his plane near Mallow, Ireland, in 1983, Power.s tale is fresh, lovely and thoroughly PG rated. Unfortunately, it adds nothing to the genre and, so, in the final analysis may simply be too good hearted for its own good. Demián Bichir plays Ernesto, the pilot who is forced to crash land his plane under mysterious circumstances in the beautiful green countryside. The...

For Demian Bichir, the deserved Oscar nomination he received for his moving turn in "A Better Life," was validation for a career that has been building steadily. This year the actor is beginning to see the payoff with more substantial roles in bigger films like Oliver Stone's "Savages" (where he was one of the highlights) and Robert Rodriguez's "Machete Kills" which is now shooting. But this week a film arrives that is likely to serve as a reminder of how he came to the attention of Hollywood in the first place. Bichir stars in "The Runway," the sophomore feature film from writer/director Ian Power. Inspired by true events, the comedy tells the story of Ernesto (Bichir), a Colombian pilot whose plane has crashed in a small Irish village. Not able to speak a word of English, he befriends a precocious 9-year-old boy named Paco (Jamie Kierans), the...

Searching for the perfect summer family movie? Look no further than The Runway. This charming Irish comedy from first-time director Ian Power is based on the true story of a South American pilot who crash-landed in a small town in Ireland in the 1980s. Demian Bichir stars as Ernesto, the unlucky pilot who finds himself stranded in West Cork with precious cargo in hand. Unable to speak any English, Ernesto is at the mercy of Paco (Tff 2012 Whole Lotta Sole's Jamie Kierans), a precious nine-year-old boy whose overactive imagination and minimal knowledge of Spanish allow him to view Ernesto as a hero. Eager to help the marooned pilot after hearing Paco's inflated account of the mystery man, the eccentric townspeople come together to help Ernesto rebuild his plane. When Ernesto's story receives worldwide attention and accusers from his checkered past descend on West Cork, Paco and the villagers must defend...

Another good day (night even) for Irish film. This time round, it was at Irish Film New York, where Knuckle (about bare knuckle boxing amongst the traveller community and is well worth a watch) by Ian Palmer picked up the Moet Best Film. The Moet Most Promising Film Maker went to Ian Power who is behind one of the feel good movies of the year, The Runway. And last, but not least, Paul Rowley picked up the Moet Rising Star award for Pyjama Girls. Congrats to all!

The weekly podcast should hopefully return to normal over the next few weeks. Things have changed a wee bit since the show has moved to morning times. It’s not as long, but I’m squeezing as much into it as possible including the likes of Chris Hewitt from Empire Magazine talking news / Aubrey Day from Total Film, plenty of reviews and giveaways to boot. I’m still finding my routine a bit out, but things are starting to settle now so the podcast should be back soon. On the specials page there has now been a few updates. Interviews with Rory Keenan, Joe Cornish and Ian Power are all available to download. Incidentally, as iTunes can no longer be pinged, things take a bit longer to update in the land of Apple. If you can down to the Download Podcasts on the right of the screen, that feed grabs stuff instantly,...

The new trend for Irish films to focus on family dynamics (which are often dysfunctional) rather than on political struggles is front and center in "The Runway", a brand new feel-good film inspired by a true story. Focusing on the daily lives of two Irish children in the 1980s, "The Runway" is remarkable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is its focus on kids instead of freedom fighters. Could it be that we’re finally stepping out from the shadow of history? The plot of "The Runway" is as simple and charming as the film it inspired. Based on real life events, the film opens in 1983 when a South American pilot crash lands his plane in a tiny Co. Cork field. Soon, against all the odds, the local’s villagers are building a runway to get him back into the air and safely home. That’s...

Shooting of new Irish film 'The Runway' has got underway in Goleen and Schull, Co. Cork. The film is written and directed by Ian Power, produced by Macdara Kelleher and stars Mexican actor Demián Bichir (Che, Weeds) alongside Irish actress Kerry Condon (Angela's Ashes, Rome). The Runway' is loosely inspired by the true events whereby a South American pilot crashed his airplane into a field near Mallow in Cork in 1983. Against all odds, the people of a depressed town called Dromoleen come together to build a runway, fix up a plane and get the pilot home. And in doing so caught, briefly, the imagination of a nation.
