A new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series has just been released, and in this one we’re taking a look at a movie that has the reputation of being one of the worst movies ever made. Actually, it’s widely considered to be the best worst movie ever made. It’s 1990’s Troll 2 (watch it Here), and you can hear all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Written and directed by Claudio Fragasso (going by the name Drake Floyd), Troll 2 has the following synopsis: When young Joshua learns that he will be going on vacation with his family to a small town called Nilbog, he protests adamantly. He is warned by the spirit of his deceased grandfather that goblins populate the town. His parents, Michael and Diana, dismiss his apprehensions, but soon learn to appreciate their son’s warnings. Guided by his grandfather’s ghost,...

The Flick:
I finally sat down and watched Troll 2 one year ago after viewing a trailer online for a documentary named Best Worst Movie, which chronicles the making of the film and the unexpected cult phenomena that has grown to enormous preportions. Michael Stephenson played the leading kid Joshua Waits in the sequel, and serves as Director here. He tracked down the majority of the cast and crew for a flick that is considered one of the worst movies all-time according to rating system websites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb.
As a child, Michael Stephenson recieved an unlucky Christmas present in the form of a VHS copy of Troll 2 and he has been running from that bad memory ever since. For years, he just wanted to forget about this Utah shot production made by prolific Italian director Claudio Fragasso. I will admit that Troll 2 is not going...

Troll 2 Directed by: Claudio Fragasso Written by: Rossella Drudi and Claudio Fragasso Starring: George Hardy, Michael Paul Stephenson, Robert Ormsby, Margo Prey, Connie Young I took my first trip to Nilbog just a few years ago, when my friends Katie, Nuno and Erin hosted a Halloween party that included Troll 2 as the main event. At the time, I thought they might be somewhat unique in their undying love for this movie, and I wasn't completely aware of its reputation or rabid fanbase. I knew only that it was a strange, mostly forgotten b-movie that fell under the category of "so bad it's good". Needless to say, after one watch it became very clear why people are so obsessed with this film, and now, thanks to actor Michael Paul Stephenson's wonderful documentary Best Worst Movie, Troll 2 and the story behind its production have since become the stuff of legend.

The appeal of bad movies has always been a little hard to explain, but it could probably best be compared to the innate hilarity of something like America’s Funniest Home Videos (basically now transformed into Youtube, freeing us from the groove-killing of the hosts). No matter how high our brain function as homo sapiens ever gets, we will always be reduced to our most primal, adolescent form at the sight of some one falling off a ladder, being hit in the face by a baseball bat, or getting attacked by a dog (preferably if the person is dignified or has no idea that it’s coming); similarly, it’s hilarious to see a director or writer completely humiliated upon the release of a truly awful film, as they have failed on a scale that is far larger and more expensive as well as more personal. But no matter how...

A movie came out on VHS in 1990 to little fanfare. It was called Troll 2, even though it had nothing to do with the previous Troll. It had a threadbare plot about a town named Nilbog, populated by hungry vegetarian goblins (not trolls) that turned humans into plants to eat them. It is known as the worst movie of all time. And the child actor who starred in it all those years ago has made a documentary about the many small-time actors who starred in that film. It’s called Best Worst Movie, and it is fantastic.
Troll 2, up until a few years ago, was simply regarded as a bad horror movie, with no budget and awful acting. But gradually, people started to realize something; Troll 2 wasn’t just a terrible movie, it was terribly good. Soon, the movie was being screened at sold-out shows all over the country,...

Behind every unique subculture is a great story, but not each of these stories is deserving of their own feature length documentary. Best Worst Movie would no doubt have made a fun long form essay somewhere in the back pages of Harper’s, but as a movie it doesn’t cut it.
Best Worst Movie tells the story of how the abysmal badness of Troll 2, a direct-to-video 1990 low budget horror film, has lifted the property from discount bins to cross-country sell-out midnight screenings. At the center of the film is failed actor George Hardy, a friendly yet egotistical dentist who kinda looks like a puffier and more effeminate Jonathan Archer. Through his eyes we ride the wave of Troll 2’s resurgence on the rep theater circuit, smooching drunken, adoring fans from New York to Austin.

Troll 2 is a truly abysmal film, so much so that a cult of screenings, merchandise and even conventions has been built around it, driven by young film buffs' desire to watch it again and again and guffaw at its utter awfulness. Best Worst Movie explores this world and how it has affected the lives of those involved in making Troll 2, in a funny, moving and quite wonderful documentary that delights at every turn.
Knowing that very few people who watch this film will have seen Troll 2 but many will want to afterwards, Best Worse Movie shows and says very little of the film it is based on, concentrating instead on the people who were involved in its making. It's hard to identify the star of a film as confused as Troll 2,...

What’s the difference between a typical bad movie and a Best Worst Movie? That’s the question explored by Michael Stephenson’s highly entertaining new documentary, in which he examines the experience of being part of Troll 2—both during its shooting and in the wake of its years-later cult rediscovery. Having just played Montreal’s Fantasia Festival , Best Worst has its New York premiere tonight in Brooklyn courtesy of Rooftop Films.
Directed and written by husband-and-wife Italian filmmakers Claudio Fragasso and Rossella Drudi respectively (both credited on screen as “Drako Floyd”), Troll 2 didn’t make much of a ripple when it first hit U.S. video in 1992, and the few scathing reviews it did receive (including my own for The Motion Picture Guide, later migrated to TVGuide.com; click here if you’d like to check it out) didn’t appreciate its unique, mind-boggling and attention-grabbing weirdness.

Every year in Toronto, the Hot Docs Film Festival [1] manages to assemble an exciting assortment of top-notch documentary films from around the world. This year was certainly no different, and a number of the movies have already picked up distribution deals and are well on their way to gaining mainstream attention. However, there are always plenty of diamonds in the rough as well, amazing films that sadly may never find the audience they deserve. So which upcoming documentaries are hits and which are near-misses? Read on for our full report from the 2009 Hot Docs Festival! Best Worst Movie When he was 11 years old, Michael Paul Stephenson was cast in a low budget horror movie called Troll 2. He, along with many of the other actors, thought that it would be their ticket to big time acting careers, but were shocked to find out afterward that the final product was a complete disaster.
