Judas Priest continue to unveil tracks from their forthcoming album Invincible Shield ahead of its March 8th release date.
“The Serpent and the King” is the fourth single from the LP so far, and it’s another scalding ripper from the British metal legends.
Rob Halford’s falsetto vocals are front and center — yep, he can still hit that vaunted Painkiller register — and the guitar tone sounds like it’s scratching the speakers from the inside. Under the hood, the guitar work and riff arrangements are densely composed — enough for both thrash and prog heads to feast on.
Regarding the album’s musical direction, guitarist Richie Faulkner told Audio Ink Radio that Invincible Shield “is progressive in the sense that it’s not like verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-chorus-finish,” likening it to Priest’s ’70s output.
“It’s musical part-verse-musical part,” he added. “It might do a few twists and turns, musically. It veers from the path of it,...

AC/DC played their first show in seven years on Saturday night (October 7th) at the Power Trip festival in Indio, California. The evening also featured a set by fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Judas Priest.
For this Power Trip gig, AC/DC’s lineup featured classic members Brian Johnson (vocals), Angus Young (lead guitar), and Cliff Williams (bass) alongside Stevie Young (rhythm guitar) and drummer Matt Laug.
Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden set the bar high at Power Trip the night before, but AC/DC were up to the challenge, showing no signs of rust as they ripped into “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It),” marking the first time they’ve ever kicked off a set with the Highway to Hell song.
From there, the 24-song set featured one classic after another, with the very next tune being the iconic “Back in Black,” followed by other favorites like “Thunderstruck,...

“I’ve had all the surgery now, thank god,” he said. “I’m feeling okay – it was just dragging on. I thought I’d be back on my feet months ago, I just couldn’t get used to this mode of living, constantly having something wrong. I can’t walk properly yet, but I’m not in any pain any more and the surgery on my spine went great.”

Ozzy Osbourne has revealed that he has to undergo yet another surgery due to the injuries he sustained in a 2019 fall and a 2003 Atv accident. He is also slated to get an epidural injection to relieve the pain he is currently experiencing.
It’s been a rough go of it for Ozzy over the past four years in particular. In 2019, he suffered a significant fall at home, dislodging metal rods that were inserted into his body after he famously flipped over in an Atv in 2003. On top of that, he continues to battle Parkinson’s disease.
In the return of episode of The Osbournes Podcast (watch below), which premiered on Tuesday (September 12th), the metal icon offered an update on his health, revealing that he set to undergo his fourth significant surgery related to his structural damage, including a major neck operation last year.

Ozzy Osbourne recently turned a corner with his recovery from surgery following an injury stemming from a 2019 fall, his wife and manager, Sharon Osbourne, tells Rolling Stone. “He’s doing a lot better,” she says. But he still has a long way to go before he can perform a full concert.
In July, Ozzy had to make the tough decision to withdraw from the upcoming Power Trip festival, which would have seen him co-headlining alongside Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, and others. “Unfortunately, my body is telling me that...

German metal singer Doro has shared a cover of the Judas Priest classic “Living After Midnight” featuring guest vocals from Priest frontman Rob Halford himself.
Considering the heavy metal pedigree of both singers — Doro as the frontwoman of the iconic German band Warlock in the ’80s and as a longstanding solo artist, and Halford as the Metal God — “Living After Midnight” comes as a natural choice for a cover version. It’s a confident and rebellious track, and the duo sings it with conviction. Obviously, Halford has performed the song countless times, but still sounds as triumphant as ever delivering the boastful lyrics alongside Doro.
“Judas Priest and Rob Halford have always been one of my biggest inspirations and continue to be my heroes,” remarked Doro in a press release. “It was so great working with Rob. ‘Living After Midnight’ has always been one of my favorite songs and I...

Judas Priest guitarist Richie Faulkner has partnered with Gibson for the new Flying V Custom artist signature model.
The Flying V has long been Faulkner’s axe of choice when he’s onstage, and the new signature model features numerous personal touches — the striking Pelham Blue finish being the most obvious.
The signature guitar also touts a one-piece mahogany body with a full-face pickguard, multi-ply binding, a mahogany neck with a custom Richie Faulkner profile, and an ebony fretboard with a mother-of-pearl falcon inlay at the 12th fret. Schematically, the guitar features a minimal electronics setup, with only a pickup selector switch and a single volume control.
“This guitar has become a good friend of mine over the past couple of years and is the latest evolution of my main guitar with Priest for the past 12 years,” Faulkner said in a press release. “It’s something that has evolved as...

In 1980, Dolly Parton was ruling the pop and country charts with “9 to 5” while Judas Priest were “Breaking the Law” and the members of Mötley Crüe weren’t even wearing leather. At that point in time, none of those artists likely ever thought they’d cross paths. Now, Parton has teamed with Priest screamer Rob Halford and Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx and guitarist John 5 on a new song, “Bygones,” one of two new tracks Parton released from her upcoming Rockstar album, out Nov. 17.

Dolly Parton has continued rolling out her Rockstar era with a pair of new tracks: an original song titled “Bygones” featuring Judas Priest’s Rob Halford and a cover of Heart’s “Magic Man” with Ann Wilson herself.
“Bygones” also features Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx and John 5, who recently joined the Crüe as their new guitarist. On the track, Parton and Halford trade dueling vocals, singing, “I’m sorry, so sorry/ How long must you punish me?/ Why can’t we just move on?/ Let bygones be bygones.”
In a statement, Parton called “Bygones” one of her “very favorites” on the album, adding, “The song fits with so many couples and coupling my voice with Rob, one of my all-time favorites, made it even more special.”
On her cover of “Magic Man,” Parton mostly sticks to the original, singing the first verse before handing the mic over to Wilson for the second verse.

While the mainline series that is Dark Nights: Metal is allowing for Scott Snyder to display his vast knowledge of this DC Universe, we can’t help but love how the various tie-ins that’ll hit stands this fall have an Elseworlds kind of flavor to them. Well, there’s that and the fact that each of them spotlight various evil versions of Batman.
To date, we’ve been offered closer looks at a sinister-looking Flash-Batman amalgam, The Red Death, and a twisted Batman-Joker hybrid known as The Batman Who Laughs, the latter of which may ultimately prove to get the most attention. Regardless, the next fellow to emanate from the Dark Multiverse that we’ll aim to discuss is bound to turn a few heads himself.

Where there's great popularity, there's sometimes an equal and opposite backlash. Pokemon has occasionally been accused of promoting everything from Satanism to animal cruelty. The book Why Knock Rock, published in 1984, warned of the morally corrosive dangers hidden in the music of Judas Priest, Kiss and Led Zeppelin.

I loved Mad Max: Fury Road. It was unlike anything I’d ever seen, and when I drove home from the theater after the movie ended, all I wanted to do was listen to Judas Priest while speeding wildly down the freeway. Unfortunately, I live in Los Angeles, where you can never go faster than 10 mph. So that never really happened. Just when you think they couldn’t improve on the multi-Oscar winner, something comes along to make the post-apocalyptic hellscape just one louder. Producers have decided to issue the “Black & Chrome” edition, which turns the entire movie into black and white. It’s the film you never thought you needed, but now you probably can’t live without. In a 2015 interview with /Film, the movie’s director George Miller explained how fond he was of the Mm:fr b&w when he said, “Every time I saw the black and white I thought ‘Oh,...

I’ll confess. I have a real mushy soft spot for Heavy Metal music. Back in the ‘80s, in my teen years, my buddy Nick and I would crank the latest from Kiss, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Cinderella, etc. And there’s something specifically about Metal tailored to teenagers – that heightened sense of drama we feel at that age, the hormonal urges, and the need to push back against ‘society’. (Right – but please give us our allowances to consume products, okay?)
But Metal also equated with power, which was aligned with evil, and before long, many parents came up with the notion that Metal was Satan’s music. (Is the Pmrc still a thing? Brr.) Well, marketing is marketing, and few Metal bands fought the label (hell, some even embraced it). So it seemed the timing was right for that satanic safe haven, the Horror Film, to meet up with the...

On the whole, heavy metal was quite polarizing throughout the 90’s. The first half of the decade was generally popular with fans but the second half witnessed the formation of the sub-genre nu-metal which many saw as a watered down product that betrayed the origins of heavy metal.
When it came to prominence in the late 90’s, many bands saw it as an opportunity for quick access to a more mainstream audience and witnessed bands like Machine Head, Judas Priest and even Megadeth succumb to its tantalizing promises, and ultimately, falling short of their goals.
But this wasn’t the only change happening at the time, because many bands were also changing their sound and creating entirely new sub-genres by shifting themselves into new artistic directions. The eleventh entry in an on-going series of audiovisual essays by Cristina Álvarez López and Adrian Martin. Greg Mottola's Adventureland (2009) is now playing in the United States through February 29.Few subjects divide people more sharply and ferociously than respective tastes in music. We build our identities, our system of values, even our world-views, through the music we choose to love and cultivate, whether as players or listeners—and we project our musical distastes onto a screen (or a variety of screens) constituting those monstrous Others from which we differentiate and dissociate ourselves.Popular movies have a lot to do with propagating this fascinating but treacherous and unstable cultural process. Especially teen movies, which involve themselves with the vagaries of pop, rock, and other musical styles more extensively and intimately than most genres—particularly at the level of ‘sampling,’ of the selection of pre-existing tracks for the film soundtrack (and,...

The friends and family of the late Lemmy Kilmister, known for being the truly rock and roll heart of Motörhead, gathered yesterday for a funeral service. Lemmy died in late December from to a particularly aggressive form of cancer. His funeral was filled with tributes from the likes of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, Slash, Judas Priest's Rob Halford, and Anthrax's Scott Ian. In his eulogy, Grohl described his first meeting with Lemmy, describing him as his hero, "the one true rock and roller who bridged my love of AC/DC, Sabbath, and Zeppelin, with my love of GBH and the Ramones and Black Flag." Fighting back tears, Grohl closed his speech by quoting the Little Richard song "Precious Lord Take My Hand." In his speech, Slash spoke about being "fucking intimidated" when he first met Lemmy with Guns N' Roses in London. "He was such a fucking...

Welcome back to This is Our Design. All good things come in small packages. All great podcasts come a couple days late. We’re not really sure if either of these things is true, but we know this: you don’t owe us your listenership…you owe us Awe (we’re actually not very sure about this, either; we just like to believe it). This week, co-hosts Sean Colletti and Kate Kulzick are joined by author Cooper S. Beckett of Eat The Rudecast as the crew breaks down yet another strong central sequence in addition to talking about folk tales and much more. This all leads in, of course, to “Kate’s Classical Corner” and “The Devil in the Details,” which are always ready to shock and disturb you with how thorough they are. As always, you can e-mail us at thisisourdesign666[at]gmail.com.

Here's one of those 'This'll make you feel old' nuggets - Citv's kids' classic Art Attack is 25 years old today, having aired its first episode on June 15, 1990.
Originating as a segment on '80s show No. 73, Art Attack was later spun off into its own series and became one of Citv's longest-running programmes, continuing in its original form until 2007.
There have been several attempts to revive the BAFTA-winning show - and to replicate its success abroad - but none of these imitations came close to the original and best, fronted by the brilliant Neil Buchanan.
Prepare for a nostalgia rush as we present 9 reasons why we still love Art Attack - and its original host Buchanan - a quarter of a century on.

Activision may be gearing up for a grand reveal at E3 next month, but that doesn’t mean the studio can’t grant backstage passes to budding Guitar Hero Live fans in order to tease some details ahead of time.
Part and parcel of the series’ lucrative success a generation ago was the songs featured on the set list, and developer FreeStyleGames – creative minds behind 2009’s spinoff DJ Hero – is ensuring that Live‘s soundtrack is just as memorable, with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Fall Out Boy and Rage Against The Machine toplining the game’s early set list.
That said, the music scene isn’t what it was a decade ago when the franchise first debuted, and Guitar Hero Live will reflect the new tones and tastes of 2015, all the while retaining some old school classics for good measure.

In terms of hysterical moral panics over pretty prosaic pop culture, the Satanic subliminal messages in rock music scare ranks somewhere between all the people burning Beatles records after John Lennon’s ill-advised Jesus crack and the time a large portion of the American population genuinely believed that playing Dungeons & Dragons would turn kids into occult-obsessed serial killers (mainly it just made them spend a lot of money on dice and get good at maths). And yet somehow it lead to congressional hearings, court cases, and an attempted bill to stop the practice of backmasking in music.
Backmasking is exactly what it sounds like – recording some vocals and reversing them, then concealing them within a regular song. Sia picked a good week to release her excellent “1000 Forms of Fear.” The Australian singer/songwriter’s latest album will come in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with a very only 53,000, making it one of the lowest sales tallies ever for a debuting chart topper. The summer doldrums are in full effect as the sum total of all 10 albums in top 10 will hover around 300,000 or more than 80,000 less than Coldplay sold in its opening week for “Ghost Stories” this spring. Sam Smith’s “In The Lonely Hour” hangs out at No. 2 (45,000). The unsinkable “Frozen” soundtrack will be No. 3 (40,000), while Trey Songz’ current No. 1, “Trigga” and Ed Sheeran’s “X” are too close to call for No. 4. Next come two more debuts: Judas Priest’s “Redeemer of Souls” at No. 6 (32,000) and Dirty Heads’ “Sound Of Change” at No. 7 (24,000). Miranda Lambert’s “Platinum” is No. 8 (22,000), “Now That’s What I Call Music 50” at No.

To quote heavy metal rock gods Judas Priest, if Universal think they’re going to get the multi-claim copyright infringement Section 6 lawsuit from MGM and James Bond producer Danjaq easily dismissed, the plaintiffs just told them they’ve got another thing coming. “Plaintiffs have alleged past and ongoing conduct by Universal sufficient to constitute direct and secondary copyright infringement,” says the opposition filed this week to Universal’s motion to dismiss late last month the lawsuit over the proposed pic about the Wwi creation of the UK’s MI6. ★★★☆☆The fast-track to rock superstardom is an alluring proposition for the fame-hungry X Factor generation, and the trajectory of Ramona S. Diaz's entertaining Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey (2012) feels like it's been ripped from a Hollywood narrative feature. The publicised search for a replacement singer certainly isn't new. The surviving members of Inxs led a cynical reality show campaign to find a front man replacement, while the story of Tim 'Ripper' Owens, the singer in a Judas Priest tribute band who was hired to join the real thing, formed the basis for the limp 2001 Mark Wahlberg vehicle Rock Star. What sets this doc apart from those is the band's unconventional means of finding a replacement.

Judas Priest, heavy metal legends, released the title song of their upcoming album Redeemer of Souls, their first new music in six years on Monday.
Judas Priest released “Redeemer of Souls” on YouTube and the song is also available for download on iTunes.

The 21st annual Chicago Underground Film Festival programmed an amazing lineup of wonderful short films over its five days, way too many to review them all. Below are just a few selected reviews of the short films that made the biggest impression on the Underground Film Journal. Also, the four incredibly strong films reviewed below were all also selected for awards at the fest by Journal editor Mike Everleth and his jury cohorts, Brian Chankin and Alison Cuddy.
A Million Miles Away, dir. Jennifer Reeder. A Million Miles Away was the first film projected at the festival on Opening Night and, still with several dozen other films following it throughout the fest, the jury awarded this Best Short. The film begins with several seemingly disconnected scenes of teenage girls discussing the deteriorating adult relationships in their lives — each one appears to be the child of a divorced, separated or cheating parent.

We’ll let you figure out which is which.
