Among the most popular myths in Indonesian folklore, the rampaging spirit of a sundelbolong has persisted in the country's history and culture for many years. Essentially taking the term as ‘Ghost with Hole' for the being's physical appearance as a young, dark-haired woman who was a prostitute in life who died while pregnant, the hole refers to the spot in the person's back where the fetus emerged from her body as the rest of the woman looks as she was when she was alive. The arrival of this film in the early 1980s in the middle of the country's exploitation and horror explosion served it's star Suzzanna as a genre icon in her home country as “Sundelbolong” was an unmitigated smash, terrifying generations and serving as a forerunner for numerous Asian horror films to come following its release.

Our friends over at Terror Vision announced four brand new upcoming releases this week, including Screambox movies Welcome to Hell and Cube, as well as 1988 film Captives.
The fourth movie announced by Terror Vision this week? The 1981 Indonesian horror movie Srigala, a slasher that was heavily inspired by the original Friday the 13th!
As Paul Le wrote here on Bd earlier this year, “The 1981 Indonesian movie Srigala is by no means known by the masses, but those in the loop about vintage and obscure Southeast Asian horror are aware of its existence for one reason. The director of the original Satan’s Slaves, once a steady provider of Indonesia’s homegrown horrors, joined the legion of eager filmmakers who set out to make their own slasher after watching the first Friday the 13th.”

The 1981 Indonesian movie Srigala is by no means known by the masses, but those in the loop about vintage and obscure Southeast Asian horror are aware of its existence for one reason. The director of the original Satan’s Slaves, once a steady provider of Indonesia’s homegrown horrors, joined the legion of eager filmmakers who set out to make their own slasher after watching the first Friday the 13th. However, Sisworo Gautama Putra did more than just borrow a concept — he lifted an entire ending.
Before Srigala (or “Wolf” in English) gets on with some of the most blatant copycatting in horror, Putra delivers a different movie for the first fifty minutes. The opening kill shows an unsuspecting scuba diver being gutted by an unseen assailant once he comes up to examine the small trinket he plucked from a large lake. Later, three fortune hunters arrive at the same doomed location,...

The fact that Joko Anwar was going to become a great director became obvious from the beginning, with his debut incorporating all those elements that make his cinema unique, and particularly the extremely intelligent, pointy, and ironic sense of humor.
Joni works as a film-reel deliveryman in Jakarta, since, as Anwar eloquently explains, the distributors buy one copy of each film (made from 5-6 reels) for every two screening rooms, thus the need of people who take the reels from one cinema to another during the screenings. One day, while waiting for his next reel, he stumbles upon a gorgeous girl, who is waiting in line for a movie with her high-maintenance (to say the least) boyfriend, Otto. Joni cannot help but notice her, and the same applies to her, leading to a discussion that ends up with her promising to give him her name if he manages to deliver the reels in time.

Indonesian wu xia The Golden Cane Warrior flies onto Blu-ray and DVD November 3 in North America from Well Go USA. Our pals at Wgusa have given TwitchFilm an exclusive clip and it gives you just a taste of the soaring martial arts action in the film.I was able to catch the film when it played at the Asian Film Festival of Dallas over the summer and I really enjoyed it. Here's a judicious selection from my review:i know there are fun Indonesian films out there. Whether it's the balls out insane '70s action cinema of Arizal and Barry Prima, the intellectual horror of Joko Anwar, the brutally extreme cinema of The Mo Brothers, or even the stupidly goofball Garuda films. However, as fun as...

When director Gareth Huw Evans introduced star Iko Uwais to the world in Merantau it marked Indonesia's return to martial arts film after a roughly fifteen year absence. Indonesia had a proud tradition of action film for years but, sadly, that tradition dried up with the retirement of Barry Prima. But it looks like it's back now and coming on strong. The Evans / Uwais combination are now hard at work on their second effort together, The Raid, while other directors and other fight teams look to get in on the action as well. And first out of the gate is director Lee Ngan Cheong and his upcoming Fight: City Of Darkness.Shot on a Canon Dslr camera, Fight is the story of four young men...

We’ve talked more than enough about the making of Indonesian martial arts film Merantau and now the time has come to show you the goods. The discipline is silat. The fighter is Iko Uwais. And if the brand new trailer for the film is any indicator then a legitimate new challenger for the international martial arts throne has just appeared on the scene. Merantau is the first Indonesian martial arts film to be produced in roughly a quarter century, Uwais the first new action star to appear in that country since the days of Barry Prima, and Lord it’s been a long time coming.

Okay, here’s one for the action film cultist in you, courtesy of the fine folks at Mondo Macabro. For those unfamiliar Mondo are not only experts in strange and bizarre film from around the world but they love these things so much that they give them the Criterion treatment, giving their releases beautifully restored editions that treat the ultimate in B-schlock like the highest end arthouse films and the end results are always impressive. And up next from Mondo is the first ever DVD release of 1981 Indonesian action film The Warrior, starring Barry Prima.
This outrageously entertaining fantasy flick stars 1980s action hero Barry Prima. He plays Jaka Sembung, a kind of Robin Hood figure who possesses mystical powers. As a figurehead for his country’s rebellion against oppressive invaders, Sembung is captured, tortured, and left for dead. But he returns, even more powerful than before. In desperation, the...
