The Crow (1994)
For the majority of kids in the early 1990s, particularly a sheltered Texas suburbanite like myself, “goth” was an abstraction—an amalgam of ideas borrowed from Nine Inch Nails videos, The Lost Boys, and whatever mall store sold Manic Panic before Hot Topic achieved manifest destiny. Gadzooks, probably. Goth was my friend’s older sister, smeared with black lipstick and adolescent fury, grudgingly telling us wide-eyed freshmen about her weekends at Dallas nightclub The Church, where she made it sound like they whipped each other to Skinny Puppy until they bled (but really they just stood around smoking cloves and complaining). John Carpenter has long been known for creating eerie, engaging soundtracks to match his unsettling and action-packed movies like Halloween and Escape From New York. Recently, he used that approach to making an ominous, stand-alone album, Lost Themes – due out February 3rd – which serves as home to "Night," a chilly, slow-building synth-driven track that recalls his work on his action soundtracks like Assault on Precinct 13 and his Escape movies, which is now streaming.

I don’t play first person shooters anymore. Back in the early days of the Xbox, I was a fervent, if untalented, Halo addict, staying up until all hours of the night with three friends in a cramped bedroom repeating the same loop of Hang ‘Em High, Boarding Action and Battle Creek, every game ending invariably with me at the bottom of the scoreboard. We rarely played the single-player; it was fun but it didn’t provide the same adrenaline-pumping, nerve-scraping experience we compulsively craved. I cut my teeth on Halo: Combat Evolved but it didn’t take long for me to discover that, as first-person shooters went, it won my attention by merit of being the only game of its ilk we had access to, lacking high end PCs with which we could experience the games whose shoulders it stood on to attain its marvelous heights. Years later, just...

In 2012, director Darren Lynn Bousman and his team hit the road and took Lucifer with them, bringing The Devil’s Carnival film and accompanying live entertainment to cities across America. Now Bousman and company are back to raise a little hell in The Devil’s Carnival: Alleluia, in which Lucifer ignites a new scheme to rattle his opposition upstairs, as shown in the first official trailer for the horror musical sequel.

Words can't describe exactly what this insane Japanese act brings to the stage... but I'll resist the temptation to just post the video, step back and let the “Wtf was that?” comments fly, and instead fill you in on the phenomenon known as Babymetal. This perky teen trio is reportedly the result of a “divine vision” by the band's producer Kobametal (probably not his real name), fusing the social phenomenon of J-pop – complete with bubblegum lyrics, squeaky schoolgirl performers and toy-box color schemes – with thundering cyber-metal riffs and rhythms. Performers Su-Metal, Moametal and Yuimetal (I'm sensing a pattern here), all barely out of junior high, cavort onstage in matching gothic costumes, belting out hits like “Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!” (spelled exactly that way, including the exclamation points) and “Gimme Chocolate!!” (as performed in the video below) while furious blastbeats, crazed samples, shredding solos and pyrotechnics burn up the stage behind them. Before I turn you over to the.

Formed in 2005, Japanese cyber-metal trio Baal have experienced a major boost in popularity recently – especially after gaining the favor of cEvin Key, one half of legendary electronic music duo Skinny Puppy, who helped introduce the band to North America last Summer. Skinny Puppy then tapped Baal to join them on tour, and the band subsequently signed with the same label, Metropolis Records, who recently released their first full-length album Shurado. That title translates as “Scene of Carnage,” which for me is a perfect description for the twisted sonic mayhem this talented team has unleashed on the world. The team of Mikito (guitars & programming), U-Tarou (vocals) and Alan (drums) revealed their unique approach to the genre with the EPs Remanufacture and Fear is the Mindkiller, in which they elude the standard club-friendly Ebm/electro beats in favor of a coarse and unpredictable approach. Weaving U-Tarou's hostile, thrash/hardcore vocals into a simple,...

Star says that David Beckham stuffed his crotch for his H&M Underwear ad. Which seems fairly ridiculous, because it wasn’t that impressive of a bulge (Andrew Christian ads have ruined me). A stylist supposedly told the magazine that “In order to make the bulge look so pronounced in the photos, David’s underwear has to be carefully stuffed and padded to create the illusion.” Of course, David’s rep says “It’s all natural.”
A poll taken at Christian Today says that 92% of people believe that Bill Nye annihilated the Creationism Museum’s Ken Ham in the debate about evolution and science the other night.
As snicks predicted, playwright David Bar Katz is suing the National Enquirer for saying he and Phillip Seymour Hoffman had a gay relationship.

London, Feb 4: Canadian rock band Skinny Puppy has asked the American government to pay them for using their songs to torture inmates at Guantanamo Bay.
Founder Evin Key told the Phoenix New Times that they heard through a "reliable grapevine" that their music was used on at least four occasions, the Mirror reported.
The 52-year-old rocker asserted that the band never supported those types of scenarios because they make unsettling music and can see it being used in a weird way.
But it doesn't sit right with them so they thought that it would be a good idea to make an invoice to the Us government for musical.

Welcome to a special edition of Comic Execution. As you may have read in the preface of last week’s column, I planned to spend this week’s column discussing, in depth, not just the latest issue but the entire run of Larime Taylor’s A Voice In The Dark. But, on the off chance there are some complaints about your weekly dose being subverted for such a malevolent purpose, let me reassure you that I had already checked to see what would be on the shelves this week before I planned this and, as luck would have it, there’s no ongoing series or debuts to write about anyway.
So why, you might ask, A Voice In The Dark? The reasons are numerous but Larime Taylor’s interactions with me on Twitter barely factor into it. No, what spurred my desire to write so lengthily on the series is...

As natural as it may seem for electronic music pioneers like Skinny Puppy's cEvin Key to compose music for horror movies, it's amazing that a project like this didn't come along much sooner: seven years ago, Key (aka Kevin Crompton) joined forces with two of his frequent collaborators – industrial music icon Ken “Hiwatt” Marshall and videogame composer Traz Damji – to form the instrumental unit Scaremeister, partnering with the Groove Addicts music library (today the Non-Stop Music/Warner Chappell library) to release a volume of 31 “mini-scores” suitable for horror features, trailers, TV shows and games. cEvin Key (and friend) in the studio Within a week of that first volume's release, Scaremeister had already licensed three of the tracks to major film studios and a video game developer. Since then, multiple cues from this ultra-creepy collection have made their way into trailers for Inglourious Basterds, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween 2 and many more,...

In the realm of dark musical delights, 2013 has been quite a historic year: legends in their respective genres returned and/or reunited, while others marked the swan songs of their careers; iconic artists turned out some of their finest work, while some innovative up-and-comers set loose fresh and evil earworms on our collective brains. Honestly, it was damn near impossible for me to narrow the list down to just thirteen entries – a mere Top 10 was out of the question – and cutting names felt like chopping off my own extremities (which I'll admit would be an impressive journalistic statement, but could lead to unpleasant side effects I'd rather not deal with). Still, I found a way to make it work. Well... okay, I cheated, actually. More on that later. But for now, let's cycle back through 2013 – definitely a banner year for scary sounds! San Diego-based duo ∆Aimon (a.k.a. Brant Showers & Nancy Lutz) have been crafting dark, spooky soundscapes since the release of their 2010 Ep Amen, and they've quickly risen to become prominent figures in the so-called “witch house” genre – a loosely-defined field encompassing a wide variety of dark, experimental and ritualistic musical types, usually based on occult themes (the style is even sometimes labeled “zombie rave” to emphasize its horror elements). This band's title falls in line with the genre's tradition of cryptic band handles, employing hieroglyphs, pictograms and Unicode characters that are often resistant to Internet searches, thus preserving an air of mystery and the artists' underground status. Photo by Geoffrey Smith II Though their M.O. is predominantly down-tempo Idm built on heavy synth rhythms, ∆Aimon's influences span the entire dark music spectrum, ranging from the classic horror concept albums of Alice Cooper and King Diamond to occult themes frequently explored by extreme metal,...

There's very little about Al Jourgensen's legendary band Ministry that hasn't been covered on these pages in some form or another, since I've been a hardcore fan of Uncle Al's output since the late '80s – a period which not only encompasses Ministry's pioneering works of industrial/metal fusion, but side projects like Revolting Cocks and Lard (the latter featuring Dead Kennedys founder and punk icon Jello Biafra), and his collaborations with industrial icons like Skinny Puppy. For those of you still catching up, you can take part in a pretty comprehensive musical journey through the band's catalog via the live album/concert film Adios... Puta Madres (which I covered in depth here), a candid document of the band's "C-u-latour." Several factors at the time led Jourgensen to dissolve Ministry after that run – including the departure of co-founder Paul Barker, the death of legendary bassist Paul Raven, and Al's own declining health.

Nostalgia for older forms of music media – specifically vinyl records, and to a lesser extent, cassette tapes – has really taken hold in pop culture, but thanks to the website Visual News, we found two artists who have turned that obsession into a new form of expression. Ted Riederer and Brian Dettmer work separately in various media, but coincidentally each of them has found a link between a passion for music and skills with creating physical art. Riederer, who is also a musician, creates his “Skullptures” by melting vinyl records of his favorite music (I'm assuming he's got backup copies) over a plaster skull mold. The result is a kind of three-dimensional depiction of how music is often linked to particular memories. Dettmer, who is known for carving intricate sculptures out of books, applies a different kind of melting technique to create his audio cassette designs, which take on many macabre shapes.

German experimental music unit Individual Totem (a.k.a. Bernrd Madl and Mathias Knopp) have been fusing dark soundscapes and heavy industrial beats for over two decades now, but somehow managed to stay just under my radar during most of that time. After a few indie releases in the '90s, new material from the band became fairly scarce again, before they resurfaced with the full-length album Mothfly in 2007. That release included memorable tracks like “WWW,” which had once surfaced as a single many years earlier only to abruptly vanish from the scene. A quick listen to that record calls to mind iconic acts like Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly or Velvet Acid Christ, but with roots in earlier electronic pioneers like Tangerine Dream (whose music is familiar to fans of '80s horror movies like Near Dark and The Keep). The combination of those influences supports a very cinematic thread of dark fantasy storytelling,...

Best known to electronic music fans as one-half of iconic band Skinny Puppy (who also just released Weapon, one of their best albums in years), cEvin Key, alias Kevin Crompton, has also maintained several unique side projects, the most notable of which being his long-running experimental outfit Download. Formed in 1994 by Key, Phil “Philth” Western and Skinny Puppy member Dwayne Goettel (who passed away shortly after the release of their debut Ep), the band has seen input from a wide range of industrial music talent, including Genesis P. Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV), Mark Spybey (Dead Voices On Air) and frequent Skinny Puppy collaborator Ken “Hiwatt” Marshall. Inspired by old-school electronic music, '80s video games, cartoons and other retro fantasies, Canadian duo Volt 9000 (alias Cory Gorski & Andrew Dobbels ) blend analog post-industrial experimentation with club-worthy beats, pop melodies and moody vocals, sometimes sprinkling the concoction with vintage movie & game samples and glitchy 8-bit accents; the end product is often a nostalgic freestyle for fans of classic gaming, synth sci-fi & horror soundtracks, and '80s & '90s pop culture, and has resonated well with fans of Skinny Puppy and Front Line Assembly (both of whom have new work out this year, by the way) and other landmark industrial acts. That style served the team well on their first albums Retrogenesis and Atomica, but for their third full-length release Conopoly, which drops tomorrow from Artoffact Records, the band focus their retro-futuristic powers on a much darker theme – namely a creepy near-future dystopia with roots in today's hot-button headlines. Earlier this year, Dawn of Ashes frontman Kristof Bathory paid a visit to FEARnet, where he talked about the coming release of the band's long-awaited full length studio album Anathema. The interim EPs Farewell to the Flesh and Hollywood Made in Gehenna involved a new creative hybridization for the band, hinting that the new record would represent more of the powerful fusion of their electro-industrial beginnings (the track “Torture Device,” which originated on their 2007 album The Crypt Injection, makes an encore here in a new form) and the blackened horror-metal of their 2010 release Genocide Chapters. I'm happy to report that Anathema is much more than the sum of those elements... and by more, I mean more shocking, more perverse, more aggressive, more evil. Plus it's structured like a loose concept album, providing a grander thematic playground for the band's splattery cinematic tendencies. Adding further spice to the stew is the...

I'm also pretty sure you'll be hearing a lot more from them in 2013 and beyond. Bear in mind a couple of things before diving in: this list is alphabetical, and not necessarily in order of preference (because I always have a shit time trying to settle on my favorite anything); and this list is confined to horror-related or darker-themed music,...

My first encounter with Portland, Oregon-based electro act Dead When I Found Her, alias founder/frontman Michael Holloway (joined onstage by John C. Worsley), was through an industrial music sampler; that discovery led me to their wildly diverse catalog of cover songs, riffing on radio standards by Depeche Mode, Prince, The Smiths and Phil Collins as well as legendary electronic acts Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails (most of these covers appear on the band's well-stocked Soundcloud page). In one of those moments of black magic that happen a lot in the horror business, I recently got a heads-up from the founder of their label, ArtOfFact Records, who as it turns out is a FEARnet fan. One thing led to another, and soon the band's latest creation fell into my clutches. Described by band members Chris Zeischegg and Chad Fjerstad as a reflection on “sex, death, and the unknown,” the music of La-based duo Chiildren (yes, it's spelled with two i's) is hard to nail down, but they describe it as a fusion of “the automation of modern electronica with post-industrial drone, while taking inspiration from grim black metal, splatter-punk fiction, and minimal film scores.” Frankly, that sentence alone was enough for me to get immediately on the horn with the band's management for more info on these cats... because between that warped concept and their completely batshit insane music video debut (which you can watch at the end of this review if you're brave enough), I was all the way in. La-based musical team kaRIN and Statik, better known as Collide, have been FEARnet faves for many years now, and it's no coincidence that their brand of spooky and sensual soundscapes has warmed the hearts and chilled the spines of horror fans through their contributions to films like Resident Evil: Extinction and The Covenant, and darkly-inclined music lovers in general through their collaborations with artists like Skinny Puppy, Tool and The Cure to name just a few. In fact, I recently heard kaRIN's silken voice on a track from Chris Vrenna's excellent new Tweaker album, which just dropped last week (read the review here). With all those irons in the fire, it's amazing they find the time to release new studio material on almost a yearly basis... and this year's record Bent and Broken is one of their most ambitious collaborative projects ever, funded almost entirely from kickstarter contributions and...

There's hardly a musician on my favorites list (or yours, probably) who hasn't crossed paths at some point with industrial rocker, drummer, programmer and producer Chris Vrenna at some point. Whether it's Nine Inch Nails, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, Metallica, Lords of Acid or dozens of others, Vrenna's distinctive style has played a massive role in shaping the dark side of multiple music genres over the past couple of decades. Aside from his association with all those iconic names, Chris has also nurtured his own sonic brainchild – an eerie gothic entity known as Tweaker. The project actually dates back to the late '90s, when Chris was still drummer for Nine Inch Nails, but Tweaker solidified as a touring group in the mid-2000s, when Vrenna was joined by guitarist/keyboardist Clint Walsh. After the release of their 2004 album 2 Am Wakeup Call, the band toured with...

As far as we're concerned, it's always cause for celebration when Canadian power-pop team The Birthday Massacre share their latest creations, and this Halloween season is no exception. While their trademark blend of '80s synth melodies, stacked industrial guitars and singer Chibi's sweet but slightly sinister vocals built them a massive international following, they've never been afraid to experiment with the formula, adding or even replacing a few key ingredients to summon a different vibe when needed. Their acclaimed 2010 release Pins and Needles added rougher, dirtier punk elements to excellent effect, while last year's follow-up Ep Imaginary Monsters cranked the aggression factor even higher through collaborations with industrial giants Combichrist and Assemblage 23. With their fifth full-length studio release Hide and Seek, the band has cast aside some of the playful melodic and lyrical elements that often define their core sound, in favor of a darker, less whimsical approach.

As far as your humble writer is concerned, every new album release from legendary electronic music duo Skinny Puppy is a historic moment. But one thing that even their finest studio work – including their amazing 2011 album Handover – can't quite capture is the nightmarish, chaotic beauty that is a Skinny Puppy live performance. While that album was mired for years in a buttload of corporate crap – mainly due to their former label's financial crisis – two dark dreamers known as Ogre (alias Kevin Ogilvie) and Cevin Key (aka Kevin Crompton) weren't sitting around lamenting the record's possible fate... hell no, they were busy blowing minds in clubs and arenas all around the world with their twisted...

Cary Hill is currently filming Scream Park, his homage to 80′s slasher films featuring Doug Bradley and Skinny Puppy lead singer Ogre. He was able to take some time away from filming to answer my questions about getting Doug Bradley on board, funding the project, and challenges faced during filming. We also have a brand new photo from the movie for you to check out:
Thank you for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. What was your inspiration behind the setting and story of Scream Park?
Cary Hill: Inspiration struck as it always does: suddenly and in the strangest place. I was at a Great America Amusement Park in California for their Halloween Haunt when a friend mentioned how great a setting it would be for a horror movie. I agreed, but waved him off as “it had been done before.” I couldn’t shake the idea...

The filmmaker who brought us the sadist cult musical Repo! The Genetic Opera, Darren Lynn Bousman, has created a follow-up musical called The Devil's Carnival. I enjoyed the insanity of Repo! and this new musical film looks like it will be just as crazy. Carnivals make for a great horror setting. Even without throwing the Devil into the mix, they are scary as hell.
Bousman says that this film is "more accessible than Repo but also a lot darker than Repo.” He went on to explain the the movie will get a roadshow release that will hit 30 cities starting in April, with a companion 13-song album. The tour will also “[turn] venues into environments that tie to the movie and that will encourage audience participation.”
This sounds like this will actually be a fun movie-going experience, especially with the audience getting involved. I wouldn't mind checking this movie out. The movie stars Paul Sorvino,...
