Mumbai, March 29 (Ians) Hindi cinema has not written very many lead female characters who have careers, although to be fair to scriptwriters, many of the roles for women have been full of substance. And depth.
It is thoroughly interesting therefore to walk into a movie that is about the story of not one but three diligent friends who are working as cabin crew for the fictional Kohinoor Airlines.
Director Rajesh Krishnan helms a 122-minute joy ride in his heist comedy film Crew starring Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon playing the leads.
Until their peaceful lives take a dramatic turn, all seems to be fine with the three rather glamorous women — Geetu (Tabu), Jasmine Kohli (Kapoor Khan) and Divya Rana (Sanon), who are a part of an airline crew aged between the 20s and the 40s — when they are unexpectedly caught in a difficult situation orchestrated by someone with ulterior motives.

The legendary Ghazal Maestro Padmashri Pankaj Udhas passed away on February 26, and the music industry is mourning his loss. Sonu Nigam wrote a heartbreaking note while others offered condolences to the bereaved family. Pankaj Ji transformed the way Ghazals were sought in this country. He modernized the Ghazal genre in this country.
However, while Pankaj ji was a popular face of the 80s, the most important song of his entire career turned out to be Chitthi Aayee Hai from the film Naam. The song, written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal, tapped into the emotions of NRIs living in foreign countries.

Amitabh Bachchan’s Film With Subhash Ghai Was Shelved After A Showdown & Then Boney Kapoor Pitched Ram Lakhan (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Old-age Bollywood is an era where a lot happened and was never revealed. Most of the stories were slid under covers, and many of them were shared and remembered in memories but weren’t published ever. One such story happened on one of the elaborate sets of Subhash Ghai’s film that starred Amitabh Bachchan in the lead.
The angry young man was the muse for the showman of the industry, and they were working on a film titled Devaa. The shoot began in 1987. The film also starred Raaj Kumar, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Shammi Kapoor, and Ila Arun, and the music was given by Laxmikant Pyarelal. However, the film was eventually shelved. Guess why? Because of Big B, cheating Ghai and their regular ego-clashes.

Music composer Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, not only as a celebration of his musical prowess, but also in acknowledgment of his role in defining the golden era of Hindi film music.
The octogenarian learnt the basics of music from his father, the renowned trumpeteer of his time, Ramprasad ‘Babaji’ Sharma. He then aced the violin under the guidance of the Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves, whom he went on to immortalise in the song ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’, which was picturised on Amitabh Bachchan (who also contributed to the vocals) in the 1977 film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.
Pyarelal teamed up with Laxmikant Kudalkar and they worked in more than 750 Hindi films between 1963 to 1998. They collaborated with the biggest names of the industry, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra.

Singer Asha Bhosle, who carved out her own independent niche and ruled the roost over the world of music, turns a ripe old 90 on Friday, and notwithstanding a long and eventful musical journey of eight decades, neither her vocal cords are tired nor has she retired…
It was back way, some 80 years ago, when a petite 10-year-old girl Asha Mangeshkar earnestly stood before a studio microphone and recorded her first playback song for composer Datta S. Davjekar, ‘Chala Chala Nav Bal…’ for a Marathi film (‘Majha Bal’ – 1943).
Though it came just a year after her father Pt. Deenanath Mangeshkar’s passing (1942), Asha’s maiden number did not exactly set the film industry on fire but she continued to get humdrum singing assignments, and like her older sibling Lata Mangeshkar, continued the uphill musical sojourn.

The forthcoming Vidya Balan-starrer Tumhari Sulu is a fun, inspirational story of a housewife who believes that she can have a life outside the walls of her home. The trailer of the film has already received immense love and appreciation, and the film has been placed on many lists, including ours, of the most anticipated releases of the year.
Besides the fact that Vidya plays the lead role of Sulu in the film, another high moment is that the film revisits one of the most iconic Bollywood songs – a recreation of Sridevi’s hit track ‘Hawa Hawai’.
Interestingly Vidya Balan was barely 5 years old when the original ‘Hawa Hawai from Mr. India released in 1987. When Vidya came on set to shoot the song with co-stars Neha Dhupia and Rj Malishka, she couldn’t help but go back in time and revisit her memory of ‘Hawa Hawai’ when she was a little girl.

It can now be told. Sooraj Barjatya's eagerly anticipated Diwali bonanza Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is actually a variation on Mark Twain's The Prince & The Pauper where two lookalike heroes, a commoner and a royalty, exchange places to see what the other one's life feels like. The two roles are played by Salman Khan. Revealing this and further information, a source close to the project says, "More than Mark Twain's novel The Prince & The Pauper, Sooraj Barjatyaji is a fan of the 1968 film Raja Aur Runk which was based on the same classic novel. The film is also inspired by the Dharmendra starrer Yakeen and the Shashi Kapoor starrer Haseena Maan Jayegi where the leading lady's beloved is replaced by his double. That explains Salman's look of discomfort and guilt as Sonam Kapoor dances all around him in the song 'Jalte diye'." Raja Aur Runk was produced...

Pyar karne wale kabhi darte nahin jo darte hain woh pyar karte nahin. 32 years ago Meenakshi Sheshadri had lip-synced Anand Bakshi’s famous words about boundless, unchained, unstoppable love.
Now it’s the striking debutant Athiya Shetty who mouths these words, though we don’t see her saying it. Just feeling it.
Which is really in the fitness of things. This 2015 adaptation of Subhash Ghai’s 1983 musical blockbuster captures the impish bustle and the unbridled impetuousness of first love from the original, and merges these into something slightly sinister and dark.
Because, folks this is 2015. Love at first sight is not a tenable target for a lifetime of togetherness. There are more practical considerations to be gone through before love conquers the pay cheque. Nikhil Advani’s remake of a film about a highly melodratic love is rendered into practical pastel pastiche of passion pain and rebellion.
Hero looks and feels posh.

However, Madan Mohan never regretted as he was never in the race for awards and focused only on quality music. But there was someone very close to Madan Mohan, who felt the pinch whenever Madan Mohan was declined the Award.

Film lyricist Anand Bakshi is regarded as the most successful Indian film lyricist having written 4000 songs in a career ranging 45 years. A look at his work reveals his mastery over his art. Remember Chingari Koi Bhadke....(Amar Prem), Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Bandh Ho...(Bobby), Teri Pehli Nazar Ko Salaam... (Ek Duje Ke Liye), Tujhe Dekha To...(Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) etc.
Anand Bakshi was a master of penning lyrics, within minutes, he could write to the tunes of music directors and in the process many a times he would cram mindless words like Dum Maro Dum...., Achcha To Hum Chalte Hain....Mere Jeevan Sathi Pyar Kiye Ja... etc incidentally the songs would prove hit.
One such song that he set to the tune of Laxmikant-Pyarelal was for the movie Amir Garib (1974) staring Dev Anand and Hema Malani. The song was Baith Ja Baith Gayi, Khadi Ho Ja Khadi...

What do you get when you put the master screenwriters of populist and allegoric masala films and the urbane and intellectual director of Masoom to combine their talents to create India’s most beloved superhero? Mr. India is the end product that transcends all masala boundaries to become the zaniest and looniest comedies of the 80s. Salim-Javed made sure that their last collaborative effort pulled out all the stops to become a classic. After 1942: A Love Story, Mr. India was the second most worn down VHS of my childhood with weekly screenings after school.

He has taken the rights of the legendary flute based theme from Ghai's Hero, leaving Salman Khan who is producing the remake of Hero with Sooraj Panscholi, high and dry. Says a source close to the Hero remake, "Salman was very keen to get the songs and music of the original Hero from Subhash Ghai. But while selling the remake rights of the film to Salman, Ghai revealed that the rights of all the songs and music...

It was truly a night to remember. Saturday, March 2, 2013. Shelter Don Bosco, an institution that looks after street children were celebrating their Silver Jubilee and Boman Irani made it an affair to remember for the packed-to-capacity audience at Shanmukhananda Auditorium.
He literally brought the house down with his antics and music and in the end had every one of them on their feet applauding as he sang We Are The World, mimicking all the voices right from Lionel Richie to Willie Nelson to Tina Turner to Michael Jackson and more. Giving him company on the track was Manasi Scott.
That’s not all, early next morning, he was up tweeting, urging his followers to help out the institute. And by the end of the day he had a sizeable assurance of help pouring in. Come to think of it: how many, tired as they are in their daily grind, would find time to rehearse,...

Looking back at 2012 song-ically, it certainly was a year of cool sounds, new voices, groovy and groovin’ beats and over all some killer tracks. Many of the songs brought a new vibe to the music of the movies, songs flavored with new influences, and songs that we never would have thought we would hear in a Bollywood flick. There were classic beats that got us up and dancing not to mention the grooves of today that got us to move to the music. We met some new singers we can’t wait to hear more of and some of our favorites blew us away with outstanding vocals. 2012 was full of surprises and we enjoyed so many of them, 50 in fact and every single note! As always we loved these songs when they first came out but once we saw them in the movie we loved them even more! Check out...

The Ranbir Kapoor - Deepika Padukone starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has been making headlines for the past few days. Now yet again, the Dharma Productions film has come into the spotlight as reportedly the super-hit track 'Jumma Chumma De De' from Amitabh Bachchan starrer Hum will be recreated in the film. The original, which was a duet, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, and sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sudesh Bhosle featured Big B along with Kimi Katkar. The modern day version of this song will feature Ranbir and the actor will also be singing a few lines himself in the song. Apparently, the makers wanted naughty, perky rhythms and lines that would suit Ranbir, and hence settled for the colourful track. Though sources in Dharma refused to comment on the track's inclusion, Adarsh Gupta, Business Head, Saregama, has stated that the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani team has acquired the rights of the chartbuster.

Madhuri Dixit: fabulous actress, amazing dancer and that smile that lights up the screen and the world. She creates magic on screen. To celebrate her birthday and to celebrate the Dancing queen coming back to Bollywood we polled some of our writers to find out what was their favorite Madhuri Moment on screen. Many could not think of just one and had, had, had to write about more than one, even up to six yes six! Sit back, relax and enjoy some of our favorite Madhuri scenes and of course dances!
Charla
Aur Paas…(Dil Toh Pagal Hai, 1997)
My favorite scene involves Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit and is from the movie Dil Toh Pagal Hai. According to me, this is one of the most romantic scenes ever (and what else to expect from a Yash Chopra movie), but with a playful touch and that combo makes the scene so interesting to watch.

At 71, Pyarelal Sharma has the enthusiasm of a musical newbie. He remembers his late partner without any false melodrama. "We were like one, closer than brothers, so no one can even begin to understand our bond,'' he says. Not many are aware that till Laxmikant suggested that they team up as a duo in films, Pyarelal's ambition was to become a famous musician from India in Western music abroad, like his close friend Zubin Mehta. After Laxmikant passed away in 1998, the maestro (described by Laxmikant as "the only complete music director in Hindi cinema'' who could read and write Indian and Western notations, compose, arrange, conduct and record songs and knew all instruments like the back of his hand) fought back against bad times. "Even today, I would not mind doing films if they are from A-list setups. Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai and Mahesh Bhatt keep talking about working together again,...

They are the new kids on the block in the Hindi film music industry, but brothers Ajay and Atul Gogvale have been creating award winning soundtracks and background scores for Marathi films since 2004. Their first foray into the Hindi film industry was the Ajay Devgn starrer Singham. Audiences fell in love with their range and depth of sound in the songs ‘Maula Maula’, ‘Singham’ and ‘Saathiya’ and could not wait to hear more. Karan Johar and Karan Malhotra apparently agreed and hired them to create the sound for their version of Agneepath. Using their Marathi flavor as a basis and taking into consideration the new telling of this classic, the brothers say as soon as they heard the script of Agneepath they knew they had to create music that was full of grandeur and that it needed to be larger than life. Anu Malik on the phenomenon of incorporating old songs in today's films by paying hefty rights Let me tell you that I would love to re-create a song myself. But the older song too should be mine! I do not want to depend on someone else's work! I think that the trend of officially incorporating old songs in today's films, on the positive side, speaks very highly of our past composers and frankly, even my generation. It shows that Shankar-Jaikishan, Kalyanji-Anandji, R.D.Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and others were 100 years ahead of their times and of today's music directors! It proves that they composed timeless melodies that people still want to hear today, albeit with new sound production. And why not? Who does not like solid songs? The new generation has not heard these songs and when they do, they generally love them. The money spent on acquiring these songs are...

Anand Bakshi who wrote more than 4500 lyrics during his long career of 40 years, out of which at least 3000 songs were superhits, would now be a part of a comprehensive documentary that his close friend and creative collaborator Subhash Ghai will make. Research on the man and poet whose longevity defies all definition, has already begun. Says Ghai, "At the moment I am in the process of putting together the pieces of Bakshi Saab's life. But yes, I don't want to make a dry boring staccato documentary that no one would watch. This was a man who wrote some of the most entertaining songs for our films. I want the documentary on Bakshi Saab to be seen by generations that have not grown up with Bakshi's Saab's words in the mouth, as we have." Ghai wants to humanize Bakshi in the documentary. "I've put together a team of like-minded Bakshi fans.
