For some people, timing is everything, especially regarding life planning. The problem with meticulous plans is no one can account for the unknown, and a wrench in the works can throw the entire strategy out of whack. The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.
Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. The cast in this is deep.

Back when we heard that Georgina Campbell was starring in the psychological horror film Lovely, Dark, and Deep, she was best known for winning a BAFTA TV leading actress award for her role in the 2014 TV movie Murdered by My Boyfriend. Since then, we’ve seen her name around here quite a lot, due to her roles in films like All My Friends Hate Me, Barbarian, Bird Box: Barcelona, T.I.M., and the upcoming The Watchers, Cold Storage, and Psycho Killer. As for Lovely, Dark, and Deep, it’s set to receive a VOD release on February 22nd, and we have the trailer embedded below.
This project marks the feature directorial debut of Teresa Sutherland, who previously wrote Emma Tammi’s horror western The Wind and was a staff writer on the Netflix / Mike Flanagan series Midnight Mass. The story of this “cosmic thriller” sees Campbell taking on the role of Lennon,...

During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep) is headed back into the world of Stephen King with The Life of Chuck, and Flanagan has announced that production has wrapped.
Perhaps what’s more notable here is that Flanagan’s announcement thread highlights what to expect. Or rather, what not to expect: The Life of Chuck won’t be a horror movie.
That’s probably not a surprise to those familiar with the source short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds. The Life of Chuck is three separate stories linked together to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor at 39 and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.
Flanagan said, “Now I’m back to LA to edit (cannot wait), and start the long road of expectation setting that The Life of Chuck isn’t a horror movie.” The...

Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – recently went into production on another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck… and now, during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, star Tom Hiddleston (Loki) has confirmed that his work on the film has been completed. While talking about the film, Hiddleston also compared it to one of the most popular King adaptations, The Shawshank Redemption!

Hiddleston is playing Chuck, with Mark Hamill (Star Wars) playing a character named Albie.

When it was first announced that Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – would be directing another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, there were two actors already attached to the project: Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars). Once filming got underway in Alabama earlier this month (the independent production was able to secure a SAG interim agreement that allows it to film while the Screen Actors Guild strike is still going on), it was revealed that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Jacob Tremblay (The Predator) are also in the cast. And now Flanagan has taken to social media to reveal the names of the rest of the characters – a list that includes A Nightmare on Elm Street...

There's so much to celebrate right now!
Who is more excited at the moment? The Chenford fans who got to see the couple work through an obstacle and reward themselves with some hot sexytimes, or the Angela and Wesley fans after she revealed that they're expecting again?
A lot happened on The Rookie Season 5 Episode 12, including a fun cameo by Kelly Clarkson, but it was a strong installment for many characters.
They're playing it low and slow with this Elijah reveal and the effects that it'll have on Angela and Wesley. It feels like this arc will simmer for a bit before we see any significant payoff from it, at least a favorable one from our perspective.
The mere threat of Elijah and what he can do is enough to have Angela and Wesley unravel at the seams, and both are willing to go to some lengths to get Elijah out of their hair.

After giving us a unique twist on the vampire film in Climate of the Hunter, Mickey Reece and co-writer John Selvidge are back with Agnes, their take on demonic possession and evil doings in a convent. And while I knew this wasn’t going to be another nunsploitation film, I wasn’t expecting just what it delivers.
Sister Agnes is a young nun in an out-of-the-way convent of Saint Theresa. Her behaviour has been most troubling lately, foaming at the mouth, swearing at, and even attacking her fellow nuns. When Mother Superior (Mary Buss; Camp Cold Brook) asks for help she’s sent Father Donaghue an exorcist whom the diocese is looking for an excuse to excommunicate and his protege Ben.

Molly C. Quinn stars in the new indie horror film Agnes, which premiered at Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Quinn signed on as executive producer for Agnes with her production company QWGmire. Quinn has previously starred in the series Castle, as well as the film Doctor Sleep.
Agnes tells the horrific story of a nun who becomes possessed (Hayley McFarland) and is then subjected to an exorcism by a priest, played by Ben Hall (Climate of the Hunter), who was given the task as a form of punishment for his questionable past. Molly C. Quinn plays a nun named Mary who is friends with the possessed nun, Agnes, but is also dealing with her own demons, which leads her on a journey of self-discovery.

From Oklahoma City, indie filmmaker Mickey Reece has astoundingly made over twenty-five movies in a decade, often working on a very small budget. His new film Agnes premiered at Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and is now being released by Magnet Releasing. Star Molly C. Quinn even served as an executive producer through her production company QWGmire.
Agnes tells the story of a nun named Agnes (Hayley McFarland) who begins to show signs of possession, much to the dismay of her convent’s Mother Superior. Molly C. Quinn (Doctor Sleep) plays Mary, a nun who is friends with Agnes and who has been struggling internally since joining the convent. Ben Hall (Climate of the Hunter) plays Father Donaghue, a priest with a shady background who is called in to perform an exorcism on Agnes, along with a priest in training, Benjamin, played by Jake Horowitz. Those uncertain just how seriously Paul Verhoeven intended us to take the alternately earnest and lurid nunsploitation of “Benedetta” will be even more flummoxed by Mickey Reece’s “Agnes.” , in addition to being too underdeveloped and tonally wobbly to satisfy in themselves.
Unlike the squirrelly genre-bender that was the director’s last feature, “Climate of the Hunter,” conceptually near-random “Agnes” does not find its own singular terms to work within. Viewers lured in by the horror-movie marketing will be particularly irked by this bait-and-switch oddity, which Magnet releases to limited U.S. theaters and VOD on Dec. 10.
When a young nun suddenly begins ranting obscenities in a “demonic” voice at a Carmelite convent, the bishop informs Father Donaghue (Ben Hall) that he must attend to the situation. He’s been trained for such possession cases but is most reluctant to go, as he doesn’t “really believe in this medieval woo-woo” anymore,...

"You don't have the luxury to be frightened!" Magnet Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a nun horror film titled Agnes, from filmmaker Mickey Reece. This initially premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, and also recently stopped by Fantastic Fest and the Sitges Film Festival this fall. Rumors of demonic possession at a religious convent prompts a church investigation into the strange goings-on among its nuns. A disaffected priest and his neophyte are confronted with temptation, bloodshed and a crisis of faith. That description sounds a lot like Paul Verhoeven's Benedetta (which I also highly recommend) - but this is something else entirely! Agnes stars Hayley McFarland as the titular nun "Agnes", with Molly C. Quinn, Sean Gunn, Chris Sullivan, Rachel True, Chris Browning, and Jake Horowitz. This looks rather cliche and obvious, especially following the exquisite Saint Maud. But it still might be worth a watch.

Agnes begins how any other possession film might––with the discovery of a demonic presence. When the convent of Saint Theresa fear there’s evil inhabiting the body of one of their young nuns, they outsource help from the diocese. Things quickly, expectedly start to unravel from there. But director Mickey Reece wants you to forget everything you know about possession and exorcism in film––or, well, maybe not. Because part of what makes his new feature Agnes work so beautifully is its very upending of expectations for that particular horror subgenre. With over twenty-five feature films thus far, spanning his career since 2008 as a lower-budget indie darling––and who impressed with a wider reach with last year’s Fantasia staple Climate of the Hunter––Reece makes clear how films like The Conjuring franchise have been failing us. Reece (alongside co-writer John Selvidge) has crafted a disarming, funny, incredibly unique...

Festivals are returning (yay!) and with that comes a whole new array of brilliantly creative, indie productions for audiences to feast their eyes on. One such film is Agnes, a horror-thriller-dark comedy hybrid that features an impressive central turn from Molly C. Quinn as the titular protagonist. To celebrate the film’s showing at Tribeca tomorrow evening, on Saturday June 12th, we had the pleasure of speaking to the actress herself as she tells us all about this unique and harrowing feature, tackling religion on screen, and on starting her production company QWGmire.

"You will do as told from now on." Take a trip back to the vibrant 1960s and white picket fence suburbia, when everything was alright, and no one was complaining? The Shift is a smart little sci-fi short film made by Italian filmmaker Francesco Calabrese that feels a lot like "Black Mirror" meets The Stepford Wives. This short originally premiered back in 2015, but Short of the Week has dug it up and re-posted it and since we're only catching up with it now - it's worth featuring and worth a quick watch (only 9 mins). An ordinary day in the suburbs turns out to be anything but when Joe comes home to find out that his wife Betty hasn't been cooking dinner. And there's a good reason for that. The Shift stars Ryan Welsh as Joe, and Molly C. Quinn as Betty, who looks a lot like Bryce Dallas Howard (at...

"You can have anything you want in this world, as long as you know how to steal it." Epic Releasing has debuted a trailer for an action thriller titled Last Rampage, about the true story of a notorious prison break in Arizona in 1978. The film stars Robert Patrick as Gary Tison, a convicted murderer who escaped from prison with his cellmate, played by Chris Browning. While the sheriff, played by Bruce Davison, was hunting him down the two went on a murderous rampage. The film features a "chilling tour-de-force turn by Robert Patrick" in a story "about the dark side of family loyalty." The full cast includes Heather Graham, Molly C. When you think of short stories like W.W. Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw” or Richard Matheson’s “Button, Button” (adapted to the small screen for The Twilight Zone and big for Richard Kelly’s underrated The Box), dark images of death are conjured. The consequences of earning personal reward come at great cost to those you may or may not know. They concern selfish acts that will incite chaos and a purveyor of their too-good-to-be-true opportunities who relishes in watching the destructive path cut by fate’s unyielding need to balance the scales explode. But what if this story was flipped? What if instead of supernatural dread at the hands of a grotesque figure seeking moral bankruptcy, the chance to alter destiny came from a sweet elderly couple with God-like omniscience?

Once the network chose not to re-sign Stana Katic and Tamala Jones, reportedly for budgetary reasons, fans were not so keen on a Castle renewal. The backlash was rather epic.
