New Delhi, April 11 (Ians) Soon after he revolutionised Indian film music with ‘Babul mora naihar’, top classical musicians, meeting in Calcutta, decided that Ustad Faiyyaz Khan, who had sung the thumri earlier, should tie a ritual thread to K. L. Saigal to signify discipleship. The Ustad wanted to meet the singer alone first, and after an hour, someone checked to find that both, in high spirits, were insisting on calling each other their ustad.
This was revealed by santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who heard it from music director S. D. Burman, a disciple of top ustads then and an eyewitness, but a more attested incident is of the Ustad, doyen of the Agra Gharana, telling Saigal that he had nothing to teach him that would make him a greater singer.

His career is a testament to the pervasive appeal of ghazal, for Pankaj Udhas, among the foremost who brought the perceived elitist genre of music into the popular sphere, hailed well beyond its prime catchment area, but mastered the form with dedication and performed it with panache.
Pankaj Udhas, who passed away on Monday aged 72, is usually – and erroneously – seen as a purveyor of the ghazal’s “maikhana” tradition.
This is chiefly due to his famous renditions of “Mujhko yaaron muaaf karna, main nashe mein hoon”, “Thodi thodi piya karo”,”Sharab cheez hi aisi”, “Ek taraf us ka ghai ek taraf maikada”, “Sabko maloom hai main sharabi nahi” and several other vintage melodies, but there was more range to his velvet-rounded voice.
Recall the ebullient “Chandi jaisa rang hain tera”, the pensive “Kabhi saaya hai kabhi dhoop” or “Aap jinke kareeb hote hai”, the lightly mournful “Deewaron se milkar rona...

On this Diwali, here are our suggestions for the Top 10 movie tracks to celebrate the festival of lights with songs that can make you sing, dance, smile, or just put you in a great mood:
‘Deepavali Deepavali’ (‘Mudduni Maava’) – Perhaps the ultimate song for celebrating Diwali, this song from the 1993 Kannada film starring veteran actors Shashi Kumar, and Shruti in the lead role, is a timeless Diwali song. It was sung by the legendary actor and singer Dr. Rajkumar, alongside composer S.P Balasubrahmanyam, and Manjula Gururaja. However, this is sadly one of the most overlooked songs for Diwali. The go-to song for the celebrations, ‘Deepavali Deepavali’ is nonetheless a timeless song which is perfectly suited for the occasion.

Among the titans of the Indian film industry, his forte was the grand epic that brought various phases of the subcontinent’s history – ancient, medieval, and early modern – to vivid life and enabled him to use his booming baritone, which even drew blind people to cinema theatres just to hear his grandiloquence.
Be it as the Rajput nobleman Sangram Singh in “Pukar” (1931) set in the times of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, Raja Porus in “Sikandar” (1941), in the title role of the Parmar king in “Prithvi Vallabh” (1943), as the Rajguru of Rani Lakkshmibai in “Jhansi ki Rani” (1952), or the bitter persecuted Jew Ezra in “Yahudi” (1958), Sohrab Modi strode the silver screen with his imposing presence, boundless histrionic abilities, and thunderous voice.
He delivered a trailblasing performance as a kind and rational man turned domestic tyrant – and twice over- in “Jailor”, made first in 1938 and remade in 1958, with totally different casts save him in the title role.

Director Rishav Kapoor’s short film ‘Next, Please’ is a story of love and cynicism straddling both history and future. The film, which stars actor Jim Sarbh, has quite an ambitious and innovative plot, as it explores modern dating in virtual reality, where a woman embarks on a quest for love and finds herself transported to a 1950s ‘aunty bar’.
An extremely topical film that deals with the complexities of modern relationships and virtual dating, as well as the problems that come with it, ‘Next, Please’ is thematically something very different.
The film has been written by Chaitanya Tamhane as well as produced by him.
Talking about working with the ‘Court’ director, Rishav said that the duo has aimed to break new ground with their film. Elaborating on his collaboration with the acclaimed Marathi director, Rishav stated: “Bringing a Chaitanya Tamhane screenplay to life was an immensely exciting opportunity. It...

Singer Shahid Mallya, who is known for songs like ‘Rabba main toh Mar gaya oye’, ‘Daryaa’, ‘Chitta Ve’, ‘Saaiyaan’, and ‘Ikk Kudi’, has sung four songs in the film ‘Qala’. The singer said that while singing for the film he felt he had been transported to the era of Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi.
Directed by Anvitaa Dutt, music by Amit Trivedi, ‘Qala’ also stars Babil Khan, Tripti Dimri, Swastika Mukherjee, Amit Sial, and Samir Kochhar.
While talking about the album, Shahid said: “Singing for ‘Qala’ took me to the golden era because at that time one singer used to get cast as the voice of an actor, and the audience used to think that the actor himself is singing the song. For a self-taught musician, it is rather impressive how his melodies underscored popular culture for a range of occasions in late 20th century India – be it children’s lullabies “Chandamama door ke” or “Chal mere ghode”, “Ham bhi agar bachche hote” for their birthdays, “Mera yaar bana hai dulha” and “Aaj mere yaar ki shaadi hai” for marriages, as well introducing Afghan and Arab strains into Hindi film music.
That was the talent of music composer Ravi, whose contributions went beyond providing enthralling music in films such as “Chaudhvin ka Chand” (1960), “Gharana” (1961), “Waqt” (1965), “Do Badan” (1966), and “Hamraaz” (1967).
To Ravi also goes credit for giving Asha Bhosle a prominent place in playback with songs ranging from playful “C A T cat, cat maane billii” to wistfully romantic “Jab chali thandi hawa” (“Do Badan”) to the entrancingly philosophical “Aage bhi na jaane tu” (“Waqt”), as well helping Mahendra Kapoor evolve from yet another Mohd Rafi clone,...

The eternal combination of music with films and stars, many a times their fate intertwined, with each giving a boost to the other, is considered a hallmark of Indian movies. This has been the tradition of almost all films produced in India – since the humble beginning made with “Raja Harishchandra” (1913) by the venerable Father of Indian Cinema, Dhundiraj Govind ‘Dadasaheb’ Phalke.
Among the sackful of musical blockbusters churned out by Bollywood, one of the front-rankers is K Asif’s National Award winner “Mughal-e-Azam” (1960) with a dozen unforgettable scores by the Master of the Baton, Naushad Ali. Surprisingly, this all-time megabuster did not see Dilip Kumar, the winsome Prince Salim, singing a single song on the silver screen.

Introduction: The year was 2013. I got an invite to attend a programme in the Sahir Ludhianvi auditorium in Govt. College Ludhiana. It was a pleasant surprise. I found the auditorium full of fans of Sahir Ludhianvi who created such a visible memoir for this son of soil, that four hours just slipped like a blip and there was no hurry to conclude it! I had then decided to write about this legendary poet and lyricist and the brain gave a gentle nudge to write about him as a part of the series celebrating 75 years of Independence through cinema. The occasion served when his death anniversary was celebrated on 24 October 2022.
After having returned from Pakistan good, he came to Mumbai to try his luck as a lyricist. Though he made his debut as a lyricist in 1948 with Azadi Kee Rah Mein. 1950 was the year when he announced his arrival with a...

Popular singer Sona Mohapatra took a packed auditorium by surprise when she was called upon the stage at the ongoing Indian Film Festival of Melbourne to give away an award and judge the long-standing and popular dance competition of the festival.
The singer treated the auditorium packed with the Indian diaspora, government functionaries, including ministers and members of parliament, and the city’s mayor with an impromptu act.
She crooned, a-cappella, the ‘Kuhu Kuhu Bole Koyaliya’, a duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi for the pan-India 1957 film, ‘Suvarna Sundari’, starring the legendary Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Anjali Devi. That was her tribute the late Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar.
Talking about the experience, Sona said: “When the festival organisers discovered that I had collaborated with the legendary Aussie band Inxs in a single called ‘Afterglow’, they requested if I could sing a few lines to celebrate India-Australia friendship.

While it is known that everyone has a time, nothing prepares us for losing those who are family and those who we have come to admire. While he may have been a bigger name even before I was born the name of Rishi Kapoor was an inheritance from my parents, who they themselves grew up in cinema halls watching his films and passing those memories onto me by showing me those films in whatever the technology of the time. For me, Rishi Kapoor was not the first dancing star, but he was the first to make it important for the hero to be able to dance.

For almost as long as there has been Bollywood, there has been a Kapoor involved in a major way. The seemingly never-ending dynasty that has ruled Bollywood forever started with the greatest actor of his day Prithviraj Kapoor, was extended sideways by his distant cousin and long-time film producer Surinder Kapoor and continues to this day with such disparate names as Armaan Jain, Sara Ali Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja.
In between, there are no lack of star-studded names: Raj Kapoor, Boney Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan (yes to name drop too). Each has evolved their own style in their own time and in doing so has moulded Bollywood around them in both big and small ways. Yet, what has always been constant has been the power that they have delivered to Bollywood music through the ages, each performance creating a legend. So here we look at the...

It is agreed by all that Bollywood is lights, colour and music. It’s a little overacting, a little or sometimes a lot of dramatics, but most of all it sets itself apart by the power, emotionality and beauty conveyed in its music. For those who live for Bollywood’s songs, it is a privilege to have it in our lives: to know that any feeling can be expressed with just the right formation of tune, singers and lyrics. The tune is formulated by a composer, the singers perform based on instruction and style but it all wraps around the lyrics. A lyricist is a poet and in Bollywood he/she is given great powers to make even the most club beat song into a heartbreaker. And with the current state of the world, we have a chance to pause and look back on some of Bollywood’s greatest masters of this art,...

Bollywood has been around for a very long time for sure, but love has been around for longer. As much as Bollywood has somehow kept finding new ways to express love, whether that be the forbidden love of a rich man’s daughter all the way through to the love of another man/woman or in a love that dare not speak its own name because it takes the form of patriotism or religious fervour, love still out lasts Bollywood. So, on this Valentine’s day lets listen to a few different ways Bollywood has tried and failed to capture love over the years.

Song remakes are a way of Bollywood life in 2019. Certainly over the last few years every film has had at least 1 remake within its album, whether that be a re-do of an old great song, a re-interpretation of a pop song or song originally written for another language, or even just a mashup tune that reminds us of a bunch of songs. Each in their own way can be good as at the very least they remind those who know of the original song and those who didn’t weren’t given a chance to explore the reason why they warranted a remake. Below is a list of those remakes – the ones that work as their own songs, ones that joined our playlists even knowing the originals that they came from because they in themselves were good.

Kapil Sharma, who has brought back laughter weekends will be seen hosting Crpf Jawans with their Ig Mr. Rajkumar on his show this weekend along with Bollywood actors - Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra. Kapil Sharma humbly welcomed the soldiers on his show and spent some quality time listening to their stories and in return making them laugh. Kapil ensured he brought to the forefront some hidden talents of our soldiers who are doing so much for our country. Some sang, some danced and some did some rib-tickling mimicry by singing a song sung by Lata Mangeshkar in Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi style which has the audience in splits. It was a visual treat to watch the informal side of the young jawans.?

Bombay in 1946 was an epicentre for the cry for freedom from the British Raj. Lots of now famous and some infamous things happened during this time. One of these is the story of the biopic of the Urdu Bollywood scriptwriter Saadat Hasan Manto, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Manto, written, directed and produced by Nandita Das, tells his story through the eyes of those around him. This film has already been acclaimed at Cannes and was recently released to Indian audiences on the 21st of September.
The music direction of the movie has been given to Sneha Khanwalkar. Already well known for the Gangs of Wasseypur franchise and Detective Bymokesh Bakshy! amongst others, her gritty and real-life music is often perfect for the period, without needing to take the audience back to it. Earlier, there were reports that Professor Dinkan would be a comedy entertainer but now we hear that the team is planning it as a family entertainer. Why should boys have all the fun? Just the sheer pleasure of watching two of our feistiest actresses in a road movie set in Sweden is enough of a kickback to sail through what is at best a girl-bonding flick with plenty of perk and pizzazz, thanks to the crackling and hissing chemistry between the two lead actresses.
The basic premise is promising. Two very dissimilar girls share the same name and nothing else. Kalki is outgoing, loud, gregarious and bindaas. Richa is quiet, withdrawn and repressed. One wants to live every moment. The other wants her life to end the sooner the better.
Though the aggression between them is overdone, their initial bickering is well scripted and gives away some of what the characters are holding back. The striking visuals help anchor the two protagonists’ road journey.

High school friends Enid Coleslaw (Thora Birch) and Rebecca Doppelmeyer (Scarlett Johansson) absolutely cannot wait to be free of the prison of school, defiantly flipping the bird and squashing their mortarboards following their graduation. Enid isn’t off the hook just yet: her “diploma” is instead a note informing her that she must “take some stupid art class” (her words) if she hopes to graduate. Their fellow classmates are caricatures of everyone we all knew during our adolescence. Melora (Debra Azar) is inhumanly happy all the time and oblivious to Enid and Rebecca’s sense of ennui and contempt. Todd (T.J. Thyne) is ultra-nervous to talk with the insouciant Rebecca at the punchbowl. Another bespectacled student sits off by himself. Enid and Rebecca are at both an intellectual and emotional crossroads. They want to share an apartment; however, they seem unaware of the amount of money they...
