CinemaWhen people say Kodi Ramakrishna’s ‘Ammoru’ had better VFX than ‘Adipurush’, they’re saying that it was a more rewarding experience, writes Sankeertana Varma. Visuals from Ammoru (1995) and Adipurush (2023)British actor Brett Goldstein has an interesting podcast called Films To Be Buried With, where he invites famous people and tries to get to know them through the prism of cinema. I sometimes pretend to play along. “What is the first film you remember watching?” is usually his first question. As someone with clinically poor memory, I shouldn't know the answer to this question. But I do. Any other film would have easily slipped through the cracks in my brain, but the memory of my almost-six-year-old self scared out of her wits is too fundamental to be forgotten. The terror of it all is sure to have exaggerated the experience, but the mental image is so potent that all I...

Film analysisBoth the films trace the journey of a flawed male protagonist but the treatment is very different.Vinay Kumar VThe Kannada film industry has been around for 85 years. In the last eight decades, the industry has notched up numerous achievements, won critical acclaim, and received awards from across the world. But, it began to slowly wither and crumble since the 2000s. The industry’s fall was marked by a decline in the quality of movies made, money invested, and the number of screens playing Kannada movies also shrank. But then, things changed a little somewhere in the middle of the last decade. The 2006 hit Mungaru Male brought the Kannada audience back to theatres in large numbers. In 2013, India’s nomination for the Academy Awards was the Kannada movie Lucia, and a steady but shaky growth was noticeable. In 2016, to borrow Nisha Susan’s words, Kannada cinema was “having something...

Amma Rajinama, which translates to “mother’s resignation”, is about a woman so fed up with her husband and grown children that she decides to resign from her household duties. I last watched it as an 8-year-old and remembered it for being one of the two Telugu films I’d seen in which women did something important (the other is Kodi Ramakrishna’s 1995 film Ammoru). It’s now 28 years since Amma Rajinama was made. Bharathi (played by Sharada), is...

TollywoodHer portrayal as Arundhati won her accolades from all quarters.Digital NativeDigital NativeAnushka Shetty is one of the few heroines who have been able to bag women-centric roles consistently. The gorgeous actor made her debut with the Telugu movie Super way back in 2005 but it was in 2009 the film buffs started to notice her. Her portrayal as Arundhati won her accolades from all quarters. Directed by Kodi Ramakrishna, she appeared in two roles - Arundhati and Jejamma – in the movie and captivated the audiences with her spelling binding performance. She was then seen as Rudramadevi in the film with the same title but Baahubali was the crown of it all. Though she had limited scope of performance in Baahubali: the Beginning, in its sequel she had a meaty role to play with a larger screen presence. And now, Anushka Shetty is basking in glory over the positive reviews pouring in for her Bhaagamathie which released on January 26, 2018. The film was directed by G Ashok and was released in Telugu as well as Tamil. In an interview to OnManorama, the actor opened up about the roles she got to play so far and revealed that it was intentional that she selected women-centric roles. She however added that she choose powerful scripts with exciting storylines. In the interview, she was quoted as saying, “It's not that I pick movies that are centered on women characters. I choose powerful scripts with exciting storylines. But I agree that the kind of scripts that are coming in, share a basic thread that revolves around a powerful woman character. I think in south India, Arundhathi kick-started a wave of women-centric fantasy movies, thanks to filmmaker Kodi Ramakrishna. Arundhathi did really well in Indian cinema. I am glad that I'd been a part of it. I think Arundhathi opened up a market for such movies again.”...

Chennai, Jan 29: Veteran Telugu filmmaker Kodi Ramakrishna, known for churning out blockbusters such as "Ammoru" and "Arundhati" in mythology and fantasy genres, says that the success of any film depends on its 'story' and 'execution', but not on genre.
"I don't think genres have anything to do with the prospect of a film at the box office. It's the story and how it's executed that eventually decides the fate of a film. We've had so many films across several genres not doing well because of a weak story," Ramakrishna told Ians.
His upcoming Telugu film titled "Avataram" is in the science fiction genre.

However, he clarifies it is not about the situation in Sri Lanka.
He believes there is so much happening around us and that needs to be retold on the big screen.
"We have so many incidents happening around us that could be very well made into a film, but we always prefer making love stories. The story of the film will make one feel like it's their own story because anybody can easily relate.
