It’s the final theatrical western of the legendary director Budd Boetticher, and he also wrote the screenplay! Ace cinematographer Lucien Ballard was behind the camera, and Audie Murphy produced and plays Jesse James! This disc release is a gift to die-hard western fans that want to see everything, but the film itself remains a mystery — oddly nihilistic and cruel, but also awkward, with amateurish acting, slack direction and a TV-movie appearance. The one gotta-see factor for completists is Victor Jory’s three scenes as Judge Roy Bean: he nails the sleazy, gross-out charm of the Texas threat to civilization, chewing the scenery like a pro.

Twenty years after making the TV documentary The Hustons: Hollywood’s Maverick Dynasty, Morgan Neville returned to Huston and Orson Welles lore with They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead, about the making, unmaking, and resurrection of The Other Side of the Wind.
Neville joined the producing team of Frank Marshall, Peter Bogdanovich, and Filip Jan Rymsza sometime before the project’s crowd-funding campaign. The producers promised to finish the film and Neville committed to telling this part of Orson’s story.
In our conservation with Morgan Neville, we discuss Hollywood’s abandonment of Orson Welles; even mega-producer Frank Marshall’s involvement couldn’t procure the necessary budget to finish the film for decades. He also talks about the multitude of contradictory personalities Welles held throughout his life, and he comments on the stark contrast between Welles and Mr. Rogers, the other person of interest in his hit documentary.

The director, who died of a heart attack in 1985 at age 70, filmed The Other Side of the Wind between 1970 and 1976, gathering over 100 hours of footage that was never close to being fully assembled … until now. With funding from Netflix, we now have a 124-minute feature that still feels tantalizingly unfinished, though editor Bob Murawski and his expert team worked from Welles’ annotated script. It is clearly a labor of love for everyone involved in this rescue mission. (You can find the fascinating tale of how the film was pieced together...

"They'll Love Me When I'm Dead" is the new documentary feature, directed by Morgan Neville, revolving around the making and filming of "The Other Side of the Wind", directed by Orson Welles ("Citizen Kane"), streaming exclusively on Netflix November 2, 2018:
"...'They'll Love Me When I'm Dead', takes its name from a sarcastic comment Welles made to Peter Bogdanovich, following Welles' return to the U.S. in the early 1970's to shoot his ill-fated Hollywood comeback film. The documentary concludes with his death in October 1985..."
"Welles is the protagonist of my documentary," said Neville. "...it is so autobiographical, even though he said it was not..."
"The Other Side of the Wind" (1976) written/directed by Welles, was recently restored for a theatrical run, starring John Huston, Robert Random, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg and Oja Kodar:

Netflix has released a chaotic trailer for Orson Welles’ unfinished final film “The Other Side of the Wind,” just before its premiere Thursday at the Venice Film Festival.
John Huston stars as a high-profile Hollywood director making a comeback, much like Welles was attempting. The trailer mixes black-and-white and color footage, and two other filmmakers of the era — Peter Bogdanovich and Dennis Hopper — appear as characters.
Several characters in the trailer offer brutal assessments of Huston’s character, saying, “What he creates, he has to wreck. It’s a compulsion,” and, “He’s just making it up as he goes along.”
Welles shot the film-within-a-film between 1970 and 1976, and then worked on it until his death in 1985, leaving behind a 45-minute work print that he had smuggled out of France. Huston portrayed a temperamental film director battling with Hollywood executives to finish a movie — just like Welles did throughout his career.

"We don't talk about the movie!" Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for The Other Side of the Wind, the first new film from iconic filmmaker Orson Welles in 46 years. So the story goes that Welles filmed part of this back in the 1970s, but never finished and the film was scrapped. However, they found the original footage and original script and worked to complete and now it's ready to be seen. The film tells the story of a legendary director named J.J. "Jake" Hannaford, played by iconic filmmaker John Huston, who returns to Hollywood from years of semi-exile in Europe, with plans to complete work on his own innovative comeback movie, also titled The Other Side of the Wind. The full cast includes Robert Random, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg, Oja Kodar, and Lilli Palmer. This is the world's very first look at any footage before the film...

The best film of 2018 just may be from a director who has been dead for over three decades. Throughout the better half of the ’70s, Orson Welles embarked on the production of The Other Side of the Wind, a project which was never completed while the legendary director was still alive due to financial issues. With the footage being locked away for over four decades, in the past few years producers Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymsza have led the charge to complete the film based on both edited footage from Welles as well as a bevy of notes and other materials left behind. Thanks to Netflix, it was confirmed they would fund the post-production and now, ahead of a Venice premiere, the first trailer has arrived.

Netflix will bring Orson Welles’ generations-awaited final work to computer and cineplex screens. Wellesnet first reported the theatrical release, revealed in a May 27 tweet from Frank Marshall, production manager during the original shoot (1970-1976). More than 1,000 reels of film negatives languished in a Paris vault until March 2017, when the streaming service acquired the footage, entrusted it to a Marshall-led team of editors, and footed the completion/restoration costs.
A source close to the studio confirmed to IndieWire that “The Other Side of the Wind” will have numerous cinema showings, but details for the rollout are still being planned. Netflix owns global rights to the film.
Last year, Netflix’s “Okja,” “Mudbound,” and “The Breadwinner” each had a limited theatrical release. Royal Road Entertainment’s Filip Jan Rymsza, one of Marshall’s closest collaborators on the resuscitated project, previously told Wellesnet that one provision of their agreement with Netflix was turning...

Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux is in an unenviable position. He needs, and loves, to bring name auteur filmmakers to his festival. There aren’t enough of them, and one of his auteur suppliers just pulled out of Cannes 2018. Last year, Netflix delivered Noah Baumbach (“The Meyerowitz Stories”) and 2011 Camera D’or jury head Bong Joon Ho (“Okja”). When the Official Selection is announced tomorrow morning, it won’t include Netflix films from Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”), Jeremy Saulnier (“Hold the Dark”), and Paul Greengrass (“Norway”).
That’s because the granddaddy of all festivals is in France, whose film industry maintains a complex, legally binding system of funding and releasing movies in which shares of revenues are given back to producers for production. It used to be the envy of the film world; now, it looks hopelessly out of date.
Any movie that plays in French theaters must wait 36 months...

Sneak Peek footage from the unreleased satirical feature "The Other Side of the Wind" (1976) written/directed by Orson Welles ("Citizen Kane"), recently restored for a theatrical run, starring John Huston, Robert Random, Peter Bogdanovich, Susan Strasberg and Oja Kodar:
"...the film covers the 70th birthday party of movie director 'Jake Hannaford' (Huston), struggling to make a commercial comeback. It opens with Hannaford's death just after the party, and mostly focuses on the night before his death.
"We also see extracts of Hannaford's daring new film-within-a-film, 'The Other Side of the Wind'. As we learn more about Hannaford at his party, the audience realizes he is a far more complex character than he seems, and harbors several big secrets..."
Welles' original six-year shoot was plagued by difficulties with production, finance and casting, as well as complex legal problems that led to the negative being impounded and the film left unfinished for over 40 years.

An original feature documentary on late actor-filmmaker Orson Welles is in the works at Netflix, and it will be helmed by Academy Award winning director Morgan Neville (“20 Feet from Stardom”). The documentary will explore the final fifteen years of Welles’ life and his complex relationship with the film industry, both artistically and commercially, through the lens of his final movie, “The Other Side of the Wind,” which he shot in the beginning of the 1970s and has remained unfinished since then.

“‘The Other Side of the Wind’ has long been a ghostly legend in cinema history, but the story behind it is equally fascinating,” Neville said in a statement. “I’m excited to be able to tell the incredible story behind this film and to explore what made Welles such an enduring figure.

Feature will debut on digital service at same time as The Other Side Of The Wind.
Netflix announced on Monday that Morgan Neville will direct an original documentary about the final 15 years of Orson Welles’s life.
Neville will explore the American titan’s complex artistic and commercial relationship with Hollywood.
Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymzsa will serve as executive producers on the feature, produced by Neville’s Tremolo Productions.
Netflix recently came on board to add completion funds and pay for the restoration of Welles’s last, unfinished film The Other Side Of Wind.
Marshall and Rymzsa are producing that project and it will have “a significant presence throughout the new documentary, providing a framework into the legendarily volatile dynamics between Welles and the industry.”
The two films will launch in tandem in 2018.
