Do you feel the need? The need for ... another Blu-ray column? The biggest entry in this latest Blu-ray round-up is, of course, the mega-hit "Top Gun: Maverick." But there are a bunch of other major releases here, including a Criterion Collection edition of "Malcolm X," Mia Goth going crazy in "Pearl," a massive box set from Columbia Pictures, a 4K release of "Punisher: War Zone," the latest from George Miller, and a Brian De Palma classic. So keep spinning those discs.
Top Gun: Maverick
I wasn't as high on "Top Gun: Maverick" as most people, but I appreciate it as an old-school blockbuster. Tom Cruise is back, training a new generation of fighter pilots to pull off a move that really seems like the plan to blow up the Death Star at the end of "Star Wars." Blending practical effects with digital seamlessly, "Maverick" is a fist-pumping, action-packed adventure that...

The nominees list for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors has been revealed before its June 6-10 balloting.
The candidates are hoping to fill the open seats on the 54-member board. Up to four candidates are set for the open seat at each each branch, which carries three governors with staggered terms per branch.
Board members who have termed out include Academy president David Rubin (from the casting directors branch), Jan Pascale (production designers), Mark Johnson (producers) and Nancy Utley (PR).
Candidates vying for a seat include actress Marlee Matlin, composer Hans Zimmer, and executive Toby Emmerich.
The slate faces some crucial tests once installed, including selecting a new Academy president and new CEO to replace outgoing Dawn Hudson. The Academy also must overcome perceptions created in a rocky year, with its Will Smith Oscars slap incident and the uproar over what categories would make it into the Oscars broadcast.

Thursday night featured an opportunity to celebrate the people behind the scenes who put people on the screens. The Casting Society of America announced the winners of the 36th Artios Awards, recognizing the best casting efforts in feature films, television, and theatre. Hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown, it was the first virtual ceremony effort from the organization, as Hollywood continues to make adjustments in light of the ongoing pandemic.
It was also a big night for TV shows a little longer in the tooth, as many of the awards went to series that were already in competition for the 2020 Emmy Awards, meaning that the winners will have little, if any, insight as to this year’s Emmy race. That said, wins for “Normal People,” “Succession,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” are always as welcome as they are well-deserved.

Being in the entertainment industry is challenging but comes with rewards, so when I was asked to talk about what Black history meant to me, I couldn’t start the conversation without mentioning the history of Black casting directors who made it possible for me to be in the position I am in now.
I am blessed to have been mentored by a casting legends Jaki Brown and Kimberly Hardin, two phenomenal women whose shoulders I stand on. They gave me an opportunity and platform to be a part of some of the greatest history in Black cinema.
There is also Monica Swan, Chemin Bernard and Robi Reed, who have all played a big part in the history of Hollywood, paving the way in championing diversity both on and off the screen.
Reuben Cannon, the first Black casting director in Hollywood, stated “African Americans don’t get the respect they deserve in Hollywood.

Usually the annual American Cinematheque tribute puts a bunch of Hollywood folks in black tie in a hotel ballroom to ingest rubber chicken and champagne. This year’s Spike Lee award show was a streamlined virtual affair hosted by “Inside Man” star Jodie Foster, who conducted a charming interview with Lee over the course of an evening interspersed by films clips and memories from such collaborators as actors Delroy Lindo and Angela Bassett, cinematographers Ernest Dickerson and Ellen Kuras, costume designer Ruth E. Storied filmmaker Spike Lee is the latest in a long line of auteurs to be awarded honors by the American Cinematheque.
The ceremony celebrating Lee’s more than three decade-career was presented virtually due to the ongoing pandemic. A collage of images from some of his most iconic “joints”, as well as a few personal photos of Lee with his wife Tonya, and children Satchel and Jackson and at a basketball game (presumably the filmmaker’s beloved Knicks) with Denzel Washington, served as the backdrop for the 34th annual event.
Past American Cinematheque honors recipient Jodie Foster hosted the broadcast, asking her “Inside Man” director, “It’s gotta be crazy to be honored for lifetime achievement. Does it seem like it’s been that long? Do you feel like you’re 100 years old?”

Spike Lee was honored by his peers and associates Thursday as he became the 34th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award, given to a filmmaker or star who has achieved, and continues to achieve, great success in their career.
The honor, usually presented during a glitzy tribute dinner, had to go virtual this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but that didn’t stop Lee’s wide swath of admirers and colleagues from participating via Zoom and other means in the slickly produced and nicely assembled show that went off without a hitch this evening. Hosted by Jodie Foster, who previously co-starred with Denzel Washington in 2006’s Inside Man — Lee tonight recalled it as one of his personal favorites — the tribute included an innovative feature showing virtual conversations between pairs of various past artists from all fields who have worked with Lee, focusing on a specific film on which they participated.

Joining virtually every other major awards ceremony, the Casting Society of America has moved the date of its annual awards ceremony, landing on April 15, 2021 for the first-ever virtual version of the Artios Awards.
That date puts the casting awards precisely 10 days before the 2021 Oscars, slated for April 25 as part of a large scale schedule shift necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic that completely disrupted the 2020 film release calendar.
Csa also announced the recipients of its three special honors. The Rosalie Joseph Humanitarian Award will go to The Actors Fund, the charitable organization that supports behind-the-scenes workers and has been especially necessary during the pandemic. Meanwhile, the 2021 Artios Awards will for the first time present the Hoyt Bowers Award to two recipients — Robi Reed and Tara Rubin.

Speaking out and standing up to racism was the theme of a recent SAG-AFTRA panel on “Race & Storytelling.” Moderator Jason George recalled a paint-down incident while filming the 2002 movie The Climb, in which he portrayed a mountain climber on a rescue mission.
“I walked into the trailer and saw there a Caucasian man, wearing my wardrobe, my costume, and they were putting makeup on him to darken his skin so that he could be my stunt double,” he said. “In the stunt world, they call that a paint-down.” A once-common practice, it’s rare but not unheard of these days.
But George wasn’t having any of it. “This isn’t going to stand,” he told the producers, insisting that they hire a hire a black stuntman to double for him. They agreed and hired one of the world’s top black mountain climbers. “When you go looking for the talent,...

Several of John Singleton’s friends and former colleagues have agreed to help judge a short film contest created to honor the late filmmaker.
Among the judges and advisers are Hustle & Flow producer Stephanie Allain, The Best Man casting director Robi Reed, Shaft (2000) executive producer Paul Hall, and Little executive producer Preston Holmes. Also taking part are Bobbi Banks, Dawn Gilliam, Camile Tucker, Erika Conner, and Pat Prescott.
The competition is presented through a partnership between the city of Los Angeles and the Pan African Film Festival (Paff) under L.A. City Council President Herb Wesson’s embRACE L.A. initiative.
“Through the medium of film, we are encouraging young filmmakers to be a part of this conversation, just as many of John Singleton’s films were a conversation about race in South Los Angeles,” Wesson said in a recent statement.
September 15 is the deadline to submit live-action short narrative scripts for the competition.

Yes, another day, another anniversary. But this one is quite noteworthy. Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" turns 25 on Monday. It is a film I first saw when I was young, but I wasn't at all ready for it. I saw it again in film school and noticed I had grown with it, but it still whipped up complex feelings (as only the best films can). I've revisited it a number of times over the years and come to cherish it as one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever conjured, but the Academy frankly seemed like it was holding its nose just to give it the two nominations it received a quarter century ago. Kim Basinger had the right idea when the night of the Oscars came. "The best film of the year is not even nominated [for Best Picture] and it's 'Do the Right Thing,'" the "Batman" star said,...

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Eva Marcille recently said her pregnancy is "more than just a dream." And indeed, reality is catching up with her. "To see your stomach get bigger, to feel this leg kick inside of you, and then to see the baby, it's like, 'Whoa! There's really a baby in there!' " the former America's Next Top Model winner told People on Saturday before hosting Robi Reed's 11th annual Sunshine Beyond Summer charity event in Los Angeles. It's not all happiness and wonder, though. Marcille, 28, agrees with fellow Antm alum Lisa D'Amato on the subject of a pregnancy glow. "It's bulls----,...

"New Girl," the buzziest debut show of the 2011-2012 television season, may also have been the whitest. Starring Zooey Deschanel, in bangs and big glasses and being "adorkable," the sitcom could be an avatar for the still-preponderantly white casts of major network shows. Less blogged and written about were two new series on Bet, "Let's Stay Together" and "Reed Between the Lines," both featuring mostly African-American casts. During Bet's April 19 upfront presentation, executives announced that both shows, as well as flagship series "The Game," had been renewed, while "House Husbands" and "Second Generation Wayans" were given the green light.Robi Reed, Bet's vice president of talent and casting for original programming, sees the network's reaffirmed dedication to scripted programming as an important contribution to television. "At Bet, there are roles now where they don't exist in mainstream TV, where African-American actors get to play leads," Reed said. "We've been waiting.
