Kcet picked up a leading six wins tonight at the Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, including awards for local color and culture/history. Kmex, Ktla and Kvea followed with five wins each.
Ktla’s wins included the best daily morning newscast and best daily daytime newscast categories. Kvea won the best evening newscast honor. The awards were handed out at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood.

Spanish-language outlet Kmex leads with the field with 22 nominations for the 71st annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, topping Kcet’s 19. Read the full list below, and check out the nominations by network here.
It’s the first time since 2015 that Kmex has led the noms list outright. Last year it tied with Kcet for the most noms from the Television Academy, with the former PBS outlet, ultimately scoring the most trophies six months later.
Kvea is running third with 12 nominations, with NBC4 next with nine.
The hardware will be handed out during a July 27 ceremony at the Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood.

Later tonight, close to 2,000 moviegoers will fill Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn to watch Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life,” set to a live score played by a 110-piece orchestra and choir. In the wake of the terrible attacks in Paris, I found myself listening to a lot of French music and thinking about the Leonard Bernstein quote going around on Facebook: "This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before." This list came to seem like my natural response. A very small response, I know. This list is chronological and leaves off people I should probably include. Experimental music still constitutes only a speck of music sales, streams, and performances, but it’s never been bigger or easier to find. You can choose between a five-cd Steve Reich boxed set or a ten-cd Steve Reich boxed set. Maybe you’d prefer a dozen discs of Pauline Oliveros. Even less-celebrated experimentalists, such as Laurie Spiegel, are not only being reissued but well received. You’d have to be a pretty minor Minimalist not to have even one record in print. Either that or a genius, pioneering control-freak who spends years preparing each release, like La Monte Young, featured in this week's issue of New York. A near-mint copy of Young’s The Well-Tuned Piano sold on eBay last month for more than $400. (I have a vinyl copy. Offer $350 and it’s yours.) He hasn’t released many records, and the ones he has released are out of print.
