Dirty Fred (Justin Rice) and Bruho (Leo Fitzpatrick) live a fairly comfortable lifestyle thanks to the sheer quantity of affluent homes in the Catskills that are left abandoned during the off-season. They function as amoral parasites living off of the unsuspecting upper crust of Upstate New York via an endless lifecycle of finding an unoccupied vacation home, breaking inside, consuming any worthwhile alcohol and food stashed away by the owners, trashing the house, and leaving before getting caught. Dirty Fred (Justin Rice) is a self-proclamed "solipsistic fuckwad" with a penchant for hobo-chic hipster attire. An unflinchingly horny asshole fueled by a perpetual intake of booze, Dirty Fred is relentlessly sardonic and condescending; but like a Wes Anderson or Hal Ashby character turned unapologetically demented, just enough quirk appeal squeaks through to make Dirty Fred just a wee bit endearing. As we observe Dirty Fred over time, the more confused and misguided he seems.

“We found some cymbals at the last minute,” says Biship Allen’s lead singer Justin Rice in this charming performance video from 2009. “Ours got legs last night.” Watching this video, you can see how items might have disappeared in the hoopla of an evening with the band. Lyrics about swallowed keys and broken watches maintain the chaotic appeal of this bouncy Brooklyn-based group. Check out “Rooftop Brawl” in the player below, and be sure to swing by the Video Vault for other performance videos just waiting to be your new favorites....

It can clearly be argued that this world is not left wanting for more vampire love stories. I don't know if all of this modern day blood lust and sexual ambiguity got started with Anne Rice or not but it certainly didn't end there. The past few years especially have brought us an increased amount of vampire laced content. I'm specifically thinking of HBO's successful, blood slurping and breast exposing True Blood, the Swedish coming of age vamp flick Let the Right One In (which is great by the way if you aren't afraid of subtitles, mediocre English dubbing, or Sweden), and of course the ever hyped chick lit Twilight movie based on the bestselling novel (although admittedly I haven't familiarized myself with that last one - some kind of self preserving aversion to all things Mormon prevents me from going there). So do we need another vampire romance story?...

Fango got ahold of a couple of exclusive photos (see them below) from Dead & Lonely, his on-line series for IFC that debuts today. It’s a big week for West, who will also be taking part in a live Twitter chat to promote the theatrical release in select cities beginning this Friday, October 30 of his latest feature The House Of The Devil.
In Dead & Lonely, which West wrote, produced and directed, a pair of lonely Los Angelenos, Lee (Paige Stark) and Justin (Justin Rice), meet up after she answers his ad on the DateOrDie.net website—only Justin doesn’t know at first that Lee is a vampire. Additional episodes will premiere every day this week at 12 noon Est/Pst; you can check out the series here. West’s Twitter chat takes place this Thursday, Oct. 29 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Pst; to follow it, log on to Twitter,...

Some online dating sites are more thorough than others. While some boast of attaining a jaw-dropping 39 levels of romantic compatibility, others are slightly less stringent about weeding out the pervs, creeps, losers, users....oh, and the throat-gauging vampires. Such is the case at www.dateordie.net, which brings together the two central protagonists of Dead & Lonely - a five part web series debuting today at IFC.com. Meet Justin (played by Justin Rice), a schleppy and sensitive everynerd. His hobbies include being unceremoniously dumped by his live-in girlfriend, joining dubiously-named matchmaking websites, and kvetching to his buddy about the mysteries of modern dating. Seeking to traverse...

Yesterday I told you about Ti West’s latest project, Dead & Lonely set to premiere on IFC.com Monday, October 26 at Noon Et/Pt. I spoke with Ti today to find out more about the web series which centers around two lonely Los Angeles singles(Justin Rice & Paige Stark), brought together via an Internet dating website, DateOrDie.net. Catch is, one of them is a vampire. West blends the classic vampire mythos with a tale of modern loneliness in this dark, comedic short. I think the web series is a flexible and exciting new medium. What appeals to you about this format? It was a [...]

A great new director with a great and laid back saga that will be too laid back for some but well worth the watching Emerging writer/director Bob Byington hits the ground running, or is the expression hits the ground slacking with this ultra laid back and ultra low budget comedy of heartbreak, acceptance and near redemption. Justin Rice plays the character named Harmony, which is pretty funny all by itself considering he is so completely out of harmony with his life. Harmony.s problems stem from his break-up with his girl friend, the extremely attractive and contrastingly normal Jessica, played by Kristen Tucker (also a producer for the film). Only they don.t stem completely from the breakup with his girlfriend. No...

"35 Shots of Rum"
While Claire Denis' latest film, "White Material," is in the midst of a prestigious festival run that will take in Venice, Toronto and soon London, fans of the French filmmaker's work can enjoy this delicate domestic portrayal of tenderness and devotion from last year that begins a small theatrical run here in New York. Set in a nondescript Parisian neighborhood, Denis' film casually unfolds the dynamic of unspoken trust and mutual support played out between a stoic widower Lionel (Alex Descas), his daughter Joséphine (Mati Diop), and the...

I've been in New York for a grand total of about two weeks in the last month and a half, so I missed most of the press screenings for New Directors/New Films, the annual co-production of MoMA and the Film Society at Lincoln Center, which opened last night. We'll be publishing a recap of the full festival from Brandon Harris tomorrow, but I wanted to drop some notes on the one film for which I did have a chance to attend a press screening, Harmony & Me. Written and directed by Bob Byington (his Rso: Registered Sex Offender premiered at SXSW last year and then played around the country on the Range Life tour) and edited by Frank V. Ross (Hohokam, Present Company), the film was shot in Austin and features a number of faces that will be familiar to devotees of SXSW cinema and its descendants: Justin Rice as Harmony,...
