Exclusive: After a decade at Paramount Global and its predecessors ViacomCBS and Viacom, Darren Star is making a move. In a competitive situation, the prolific TV creator of such shows as Beverly Hills, 90210, Sex and the City and Emily In Paris, has signed a big multi-year overall deal at Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. No one is commenting on the size of the pact, but I hear it is in the eight figures and in the top tier of premium overall deals; certainly the biggest we have seen since the end of the strikes.
Under the pact, Star will develop and produce new series projects for broadcast and streaming through his Darren Star Productions exclusively for Universal Television. Outside of the deal, he will continue as executive producer/showrunner on his popular Netflix series Emily In Paris, which is currently filming Season 4, if it is renewed...

Following Showtime’s decision not to proceed with a new season of Uncoupled after Netflix’s cancellation, the series’ cast is breaking their silence.
Jai Rodriguez, who played Jonathan #2, took to social media to share his thoughts about the show getting canceled for good.
“Welp, guess I’m not going to NYC in May to shoot,” Rodriguez posted on Instagram Stories.
The Neil Patrick Harris-starring comedy created by Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman premiered all eight episodes of the first season on July 29, 2022. In January 2023, Netflix canceled the series after a single season. However, a month later, Showtime stepped up and picked up a second season of the comedy, which had been delayed due to the writers’ strike.
Following the show’s demise, Dan Amboyer, who played Harris’s love interest, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram.

Former Netflix series Uncoupled won’t be going forward at Showtime after all.
The news comes a year after Showtime revived the comedy — which is produced by Paramount Global sibling MTV Entertainment Studios — following a cancellation at Netflix. The decision to scuttle the show comes after some work to rejigger it to fit the sensibilities of Showtime — now known as Paramount+ With Showtime after the premium cable outlet was integrated into Paramount’s flagship streaming platform.
Reps for Showtime couldn’t be reached for comment.
Season two of Uncoupled, which stars Neil Patrick Harris as a man trying to put his life back together after breraking up with his long-time boyfriend (Tuc Watkins), had been slated to film last summer but was delayed during dual strikes by writers and actors. Tisha Campbell, Brooks Ashmanskas, Emerson Brooks and Marcia Gay Harden also starred in season one.

Deadline reports that the network has decided not to move forward with the second season ahead of filming, which was set to begin in May, following a delay due to the strikes.

Showtime won’t be coming to Uncoupled‘s rescue after all. The cabler has opted not to move forward with a second season of Neil Patrick Harris’ divorce comedy, which it previously saved after it was first canceled by Netflix, our sister site Deadline reports.
Uncoupled followed Nph as New York City real estate agent Michael Lawson, who suddenly found himself single after being unceremoniously dumped by longtime boyfriend Colin McKenna. The comedy’s eight-episode first (and now only) season ended with Colin returning to their apartment and telling Michael that he made a huge “mistake.”

Exclusive: Uncoupled is not getting saved after all. Showtime has decided not to proceed with Season 2 of the comedy series, from Emily in Paris creator Darren Star and Modern Family veteran Jeffrey Richman, Deadline has learned. A rep for the network could not be reached for comment.
The reversal comes a little over a year after Showtime stepped in to pick up the MTV Entertainment Studios-produced Uncoupled following its cancellation by Netflix after one season. Showtime’s creative team was to put the project into redevelopment to tailor it to the network’s sensibilities, and the decision not to do a second season came after months of work on that, sources said.

Exclusive: Showtime is developing Jonah Kills, a UK-based comedy created and written by Clem Garritty. It hails from Jax Media UK, which commissioned up-and-comer Garritty to generate four scripts before the comedy was pitched to Showtime. There is no work currently being done on the scripts but I hear the intention is to cast and film a pilot after the strikes, and veteran TV director Iain B. MacDonald has been tapped to direct it.
Jonah Kills follows a gay man living in London and trying to find love through sex, only to discover that every person he has ever slept with has died in a freak accident.
This marks MacDonald’s return to Showtime where he was a director on some of the network’s standout comedy series of the past decade, including Episode, for which he received an Emmy nomination, Shameless and Black Monday.

“Modern Family” has landed a cable run at Warner Bros. Discovery’s TBS network starting Sept. 25.
The ABC sitcom, which ran for 11 total seasons from 2009 to 2020, will air on TBS for a three-hour block on weekdays — specifically from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on weekdays. The licensing by the cable outlet marks an attempt to bolster its comedy options.
Previously, “Friends” and “Young Sheldon” have occupied the hours that “Modern Family” will run. Both shows will remain on the network. Monday saw longer daily marathons of “The Big Bang Theory” on TBS.
“Our audience continually seeks out popular comedies like ‘Friends,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Modern Family,’ so now that we have all three of these iconic series on TBS, we can build an even bigger, more engaged audience,” said Julie Taylor, chief of Content Strategy & Insights, US Networks Group, Warner Bros. The Neil Patrick Harris rom-com series Uncoupled is coupled again. Weeks after Netflix canceled the series, Showtime has saved it with a second-season order. According to Deadline, which reported the resurrection, Uncoupled should be “edgier” and “racier” in its new home on Showtime, which will soon be called Paramount+ with Showtime. The site also reports Uncoupled fits into “Metro Cultures,” one of the three content areas that new Showtime boss Chris McCarthy has in mind for the premium cable channel, alongside The L Word: Generation Q and The Chi. (The other two content areas are “Complex Characters” — as in Dexter and Yellowjackets — and “Powerful Worlds” — as in Billions and Homeland). Netflix canceled Uncoupled in mid-January, and MTV Entertainment Studios initially was unable to get the show a new berth at Showtime, but that was before the channel announced its rebranding and its shift in programming strategy. In the type of trade you’d expect see in the NFL, Netflix and Showtime performed an unexpected show swap this Friday. Netflix’s “Uncoupled” has been picked up from cancellation by Showtime and will return for Season 2 at the channel, while Showtime’s unaired “Ripley” will now premiere on Netflix.
Now, Netflix and Showtime didn’t literally trade the shows for each other, but negotiations for the placement of both shows were apparently occurring parallel to each other, with news happening to break on the same day. “Ripley,” which was first ordered to series in September 2019 and stars Andrew Scott, has reportedly begun post-production on its eight-episode season. “Uncoupled” starring Neil Patrick Harris premiered its first season last July, and was canceled by Netflix last month.
Sources at Netflix confirmed to IndieWire that “Ripley” will premiere on the streamer. Sources at Showtime confirmed to IndieWire that “Uncoupled” has been picked up at the network.

Exclusive: Uncoupled, has been saved. I hear Showtime is picking up Season 2 (and potentially beyond) of the comedy series, from Emily in Paris creator Darren Star and Modern Family veteran Jeffrey Richman, a couple weeks after the MTV Entertainment Studios-produced show was canceled by Netflix. Netflix and Uncoupled are, yes, uncoupled. The streaming service has canceled the Neil Patrick Harris rom-com after one season. In the series — from Sex and the City creator Darren Star and Modern Family scribe Jeffrey Richman — Harris played real estate agent Michael Lawson, suddenly single after getting dumped by his longtime boyfriend at the party Michael threw for him. “Overnight, [Michael] has to confront two nightmares: losing the man he thought was his soulmate and suddenly finding himself a single gay man in his mid-forties in New York City,” the show’s logline added. Sarah Shatz/Netflix Reviews for Uncoupled were decent, with TV Insider’s Matt Roush calling it “an arch season-long pity party sprinkled with sexy slapstick, sitcom bon mots, and strong female support from Tisha Campbell as Michael’s brassy co-worker and Marcia Gay Harden as a demanding and equally bereft divorced client.” “Diverting when it’s not...

The Neil Patrick Harris vehicle "Uncoupled" has been canceled after one season on Netflix, according to Variety. The gay rom-com made just eight episodes before getting the axe; even the combined star power of Harris and "Sex and the City" creator Darren Star behind the camera couldn't save it.
"Uncoupled" followed Harris as Michael, a New York City real estate agent whose heart gets broken when his partner, Colin (Tuc Watkins), decides to leave him after 17 years together. Michael spend the next eight episodes attempting to get over Colin (when he's not trying to win him back), get the hang of the modern gay dating scene, and navigate relationships with his friends and a wealthy real estate client (Marcia Gay Harden). Harden received a Critics Choice TV nomination for her turn as a brutally honest woman going through a situation that parallels Michael's, but otherwise, "Uncoupled" didn't make much of a splash.

Netflix is not proceeding with a second season of Uncoupled, its comedy series from Emily in Paris creator Darren Star and Modern Family veteran Jeffrey Richman.
The cancellation is not surprising. The series, starring Neil Patrick Harris, barely registered on Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankings, making a single appearance at #6 following its July 29 release. (Half-hour series are at a disadvantage in the ratings system employed by Netflix which measures hours viewed.)
Speculation that Uncoupled would not be continue at Netflix started late last year when sources indicated that there was an effort by series producer MTV Entertainment Studios to find a new home. The plan to move the series to a Paramount Global network, possibly Showtime, fall through, I hear.
Meanwhile, Netflix remains in business with Star as his comedy Emily in Paris continues to deliver big audiences, with its current third season making the Netflix Top 10 in 93 countries. The...

The Sandman, Netflix’s series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic book, ended the two-week reign of Virgin River‘s fourth season at the top of the streamer’s weekly rankings for Aug.1-Aug.7. The Sandman drew 69.5 million hours viewed in its first three days of release. That is a solid number for a new series.

Neil Patrick Harris is showing a side of himself that we’ve never seen before.
In Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman’s new Netflix series “Uncoupled,” Harris stars as Michael, a gay New York real estate agent whose partner of 17 years Colin (Tuc Watkins) leaves him.
As Michael navigates dating again, stories of love, heartbreak, middle-age and unexpected sexual encounters unfold.
Harris is seen in various states of undress. In fact, the actor has his first on-camera gay sex scene on “Uncoupled,” with “Sex and the City” movie alum Gilles Marini.
“We did make out in that first scene and then between takes he goes, ‘Oh it is true? It is true what they say?’” Harris recalls. “And I said, ‘What do they say?’ And he goes, ‘I heard that it is better kissing another man than a woman and I can see this now. It is true what they say.

Neil Patrick Harris stars in the latest Netflix comedy, "Uncoupled."By: Christopher James
When Emily in Paris first premiered, The New Yorker coined the term “ambient TV” to describe the show’s mass appeal, despite a critical drubbing and the memefication of its protagonist by the public. It’s a show made specifically for people to not concentrate on. It’s just looney and lighthearted enough to make audiences feel good. However, once you peel back just one layer of the surface, you can’t help but laugh At it, rather than with it.
Darren Starr, who gave us both Sex and the City and Emily in Paris, returns to Netflix for his new gay-centric comedy Uncoupled. It’s co-created by fellow lover of froth, Jeffrey Richman. It seems like equality means the LGBTQ+ community also needs its own piece of “ambient TV.” Uncoupled is slick, watchable and fun. It’s also maddening,...

Let’s get the “Sex and the City” comparisons out of the way quickly, shall we? Co-created by “Satc” mastermind Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman (“Modern Family”), “Uncoupled” — the new eight-episode Netflix series headlined by the immensely appealing Neil Patrick Harris, returning to sitcoms nearly a decade after nine seasons as the suit-wearing, womanizing Barney Stinson on “How I Met Your Mother” — centers on the romantic escapades of the emotionally messy but impeccably dressed Michael (Harris) and his trio of closest friends. That includes single mother and straight talker Suzanne (sitcom vet Tisha Campbell), Michael’s partner in the multimillion-dollar Manhattan residential real estate biz; the sex-obsessed Billy (Emerson Brooks), a TV weatherman who never met a younger man he didn’t like; and self-deprecating art dealer Stanley, who’s so highbrow he sends a naked pen-and-ink sketch to potential hookups. Shades of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte, yes? And just like “Satc,...

On July 29, 2022, Netflix released “Uncoupled” starring Emmy winner Neil Patrick Harris. Netflix’s Uncoupled finds Neil Patrick Harris back in New York City and looking for love. But if you’re expecting to see him playing another ladies’ man like Barney Stinson, you’ve come to the wrong show. A good show, but the wrong show.
Premiering this Friday, the eight-episode comedy from Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman stars Harris as Michael, a Manhattan real estate agent whose boyfriend of 17 years (Desperate Housewives‘ Tuc Watkins) blindsides him with a breakup. It’s the catalyst for an emotional journey to figure out what (and who) comes next for him.

Darren Star has, in recent years, had a Netflix success with “Emily in Paris” — a show that, depending on your vantage point, is either a death knell for TV comedy or a sunnily surface-level jaunt whose idle pleasures are just that. Star, the creator of “Sex and the City” and “Melrose Place,” has a gift for skating the viewer across smoothly luxurious settings.
Which may be the problem, or one of them, with his latest series for Netflix, which he created with Jeffrey Richman. “Uncoupled” features Neil Patrick Harris as Michael Lawson, an haute-Manhattan real-estate agent whose long-term relationship, to a character played by Tuc Watkins, falls apart before Michael even knows it’s broken. Michael is forced to carry on with work and to begin to date, all while pretending he’s not devastated. Uncoupled Review: Neil Patrick Harris Exposes Himself (Emotionally) in Netflix's Gay Romantic Comedy
Neil Patrick Harris spent nine seasons playing charming womanizer Barney Stinson on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother, and in his new Netflix comedy Uncoupled, his character Michael also wears nice suits and lives in New York City. But in other ways, Michael is the complete opposite of Barney: a mild-mannered gay man who has been happily coupled up with his boyfriend for the past 17 years. That happiness all comes crashing down, though, and Uncoupled — premiering this Friday; I’ve seen five of the eight episodes — is a mildly enjoyable, surprisingly dramatic look at Michael’s new life as a...

Midway through the first season of Uncoupled, Michael (Neil Patrick Harris) explodes with frustration after yet another promising hookup turns disastrous. “I’m not supposed to be here,” he yells at his perplexed date. “I’m not supposed to know about Botoxed buttholes, and PrEP, and no condoms. I am supposed to be sitting on my couch, watching TV while my boyfriend is chewing way too loud beside me. That is the world I want.”
In part, Michael’s reaction stems from personal heartache, having recently been dumped by his partner of 17 years. But he’s equally struggling with re-entering a scene he simply doesn’t get anymore — one in which even meeting guys at clubs, like he and Colin (Tuc Watkins) once did, involves connecting with them first on Grindr.
