Freeform – Disney’s television network, previously known as ABC Family – has given the greenlight to Cloak And Dagger, and it’s big news for the ABC offshoot. While the main network boasts Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter on its roster, and Marvel’s Most Wanted and John Ridley’s Marvel project on its development slate, Freeform has been slower to jump into the superhero pool. Cloak And Dagger will change that, though, bringing a teen romance of super proportions to its younger audience.
Cloak and Dagger are actually two teenage runaways named Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson. Tandy is a 16-year-old girl who runs away from her millionaire mother in Ohio, due to emotional neglect. Tyrone is a 17-year-old boy with a speech impediment, who runs away from his Boston home after failing to prevent his friend being shot by the police. Both Tandy and Tyrone arrive in New...

In addition to the news that ABC will be shooting an "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." spinoff show called "Marvel's Most Wanted", they are also looking to produce a second Marvel-based comedy. When Mockingbird arrived on "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." in the beginning of season two, she was considered a guest star. At first she was moonlighting as a Hydra agent, then she helped stage a coup against Coulson's team. Her relationship with her former husband, Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), proved to be a great source of comedy and heart, and the two of them quickly became some of "S.H.I.E.L.D.'s" best new characters last year. During season two, ABC began to look at a spinoff idea, starring both Morse and Hunter, called "Marvel's Most Wanted." By the time "Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D." was renewed for a third season last spring, the "Most Wanted...

Forget the Oscar-winning acting and writing, or the nominated directing, editing and production design. Rush Limbaugh thinks “12 Years a Slave” won Best Picture at the Academy Awards on Sunday because of one “magic word” in the title. “If it was the only thing that movie won, it was gonna win Best Picture,” the conservative radio host said on-air Monday. “There was no way. It didn’t matter if it was good or bad. I haven’t seen it. It was going to win. It had the magic word in the title. ‘Slave.’” Also read: Oscars: ’12 Years a Slave’ Screenplay Rift Between Steve McQueen,...

Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.

Last night the 2014 BAFTA Awards took place, hosted by Stephen Fry from London's Royal Opera House and it was 12 Years a Slave taking Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor while Gravity was honored for Outstanding British Film and Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor. As for the BAFTA Awards, it was Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) taking Best Supporting Actor and while Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) added another Best Actress award to...

3D space disaster movie wins six awards at Royal Opera House, including best director and best British film
It was a contest between two wildly different films – a 3D space disaster movie and an unflinching portrayal of 19th-century American slavery – and on paper it was the former, Gravity, which emerged as the biggest winner at the 2014 Bafta ceremony.
It won six awards, including best director and best British film. But 12 Years a Slave unquestionably picked up the biggest prize, best film, with Chiwetel Ejiofor named as best actor.
In a year when no one film swept the board, American Hustle also came away with three prizes.
Alfonso Cuarón was named best director and said you would not know it from his accent but he considered himself a part of the British film industry. He has lived in London for 13 years and joked: "I make a very good case for curbing immigration.

Across the pond another in the sometimes seemingly endless stream of precursor awards was given out, and this one was the London Critics Circle Film Awards. Last night, 12 Years a Slave took home three big prizes, including the Film of the Year award. The other wins were for Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o in their respective acting categories (Best Actor and Supporting Actress). The movie was also nominated for Best Director (Steve McQueen), Screenwriter (John Ridley), Supporting Actor (Michael Fassbender), and Technical Achievement. While McQueen lost to Alfonso Cuaron (for Gravity), Ridley lost to the Coen Brothers (for Inside Llewyn Davis), Fassbender lost to Barkhad Abdi (for Captain Phillips), and Bobbit’s cinematography lost to the special effects of Gravity, it was still a big night for 12 Years a Slave, as it took home more awards than any other film. Especially with the upcoming BAFTA awards the final prize before the Oscars,...

It’s that time of the year again when the British Academy of Film and Television Arts celebrates the best of the cinematic world. With the awards taking place just shy of a month before the Academy Awards, it is time to start making those all-important predictions.
Part 1 will cover:
- Best British Film
- Best Director
- Best Adapted Screenplay
- Best Original Screenplay
- Best Animated Feature
Best British Film
- Gravity
- Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
- Philomena
- Rush
- Saving Mr Banks
- The Selfish Giant
It is strange not to see Mandela and Saving Mr Banks more heavily featured in this year’s awards season, especially the former as it centres around such a prolific person. Aside the debate that it isn’t a “British film”, Gravity has made the most impact worldwide, winning the hearts of critics and film fans around the world.

I had a great time at last night's Critics' Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. I'm a proud voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and I always look forward to our Movie Awards!
It was a great night with an equally great party vibe, and all the stars were relaxed as they imbibe on cocktails and eat fantastic food.
But the best part of the evening was the awards show itself (I always feel that the Critics' Choice is a much better Oscar predictor than the Golden Globes) where Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" triumphed in all the technical categories including Best Director and "12 Years a Slave" received the top honor of Best Picture with Lupita Nyong'o beating "American Hustle's" Jennifer Lawrence for the Best Supporting Actress trophy.
My favorite part of the awards show? The love given to Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor...

At Thursday’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, Gravity grabbed the most awards — seven in total — but 12 Years a Slave dominated the major categories, winning Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o), and Best Adapted Screenplay. There were a few Golden Globe repeats, including acting wins for Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), and Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club).

Tonight the Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) announced the winners of the 2014 Critics Choice Awards, a show that isn't necessarily influential as to how the Oscars will turn out, but has been rather predictive over the last few years and a couple of curve balls were thrown tonight, perhaps suggesting what's in store for the Oscars and making this weekend's 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards that much more interesting. To begin, 12 Years a Slave took home top honors, winning Best Picture as well as Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley), but perhaps most interesting was Chiwetel Ejiofor watching Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) accepting Best Actor. Oh, and yes, I have already updated my Best Actor Oscar predictions as a result. The film also played backseat in the Best Director category as Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) followed up his Golden Globe win with a Critics Choice Award.

Oscar nominations 2014: Quite a few surprises (photo: Best Actress Oscar nominee Amy Adams in ‘American Hustle’) The Oscar 2014 nominations were announced early on Thursday morning, January 16, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Was Amy Adams shortlisted for American Hustle? Did Meryl Streep break another Oscar record? Did Robert Redford nearly break the record for longest gap between nominations in the acting categories? Was Jennifer Lawrence snubbed? Did Scarlett Johansson make Oscar history for her voice performance as Joaquin Phoenix’s love interest in Her? Was Peter Jackson-Ian McKellen’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug shortlisted in the technical categories? Well, below you’ll find the answers to all these questions. Be prepared: as usual, there were quite a few surprises. (You can compare the Academy’s choices to our Oscar 2014 predictions.) Full list of Oscar 2014 nominations Best Picture: American Hustle,...

The 2014 Oscar nominations were announced this morning and I have already made note of some of the "surprise" omissions in my post with the complete list of nominees, but it's always better to open up a new thread to look at little closer and see what surprises the Academy had to offer. Now I know the headline uses the word "snub", but that's just more out of familiarity since there really isn't anything such as a snub as there are only so many slots to be filled, which is why when making predictions for the nominees if the films and performances you predicted would be nominated didn't get in, they were probably replaced by those films you almost predicted would be nominated. That said, let's go down the line shall wec Best Picture No big surprises here unless you look at the nominations as a whole, which would be to...

This morning, at 5:38 Am Pst the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the 2014 Oscar nominations. Making the announcement will be Chris Hemsworth along with Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs and there were a few surprises, some predicted, some not. I am still trying to update all the nominees, but as for surprises let's just say Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) was a surprise as was no Paul Greengrass for director, Oprah Winfrey (The Butler) nowhere to be found, no Alex Ebert score for All is Lost, no Saving Mr. Banks in Best Picture as Philomena takes its place, no Stories We Tell in documentary, Inside Llewyn Davis, though not necessarily a surprise, was blanked out of not only Picture, but Director and Screenplay. And, the one I predicted, but one of them had to go, no Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) in Best Actress. It's also nice...

With the awards season very much in full swing, the 2014 Golden Globes were held out in Beverly Hills last night, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the event once more.
The awards are noted for being one of the few major prizes to divide the categories by genre – i.e. giving one for Drama and one for Musical or Comedy in the Motion Picture Categories. So using them to predict what comes next in the likes of the BAFTAs and the Oscars can naturally be difficult. Regardless, it’s clear that Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave and David O. Russell’s American Hustle were big winners last night, and both continue to build momentum towards the awards still to come.
As we eagerly await the Oscar nominations announcement later this week, here’s the full list of winners from last night’s 2014 Golden Globes. A great way to start the week.

Photo: RopeofSilicon / Brad Brevet The 2014 Golden Globe Awards are in the bag and the night's big winner was American Hustle, winning three awards including Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for Amy Adams and Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence. I thought the film would end up walking home with two additional awards but instead the Best Screenplay award went to, surprisingly, Spike Jonze for Her (very well deserved) and Best Director went to Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity. Neither film won anything else. One film that continued its rise, however, was Dallas Buyers Club. It was assumed Jared Leto would win Best Supporting Actor, but when Matthew McConaughey was named Best Actor (Drama) it was a bit of a surprise, considering he bested one of the night's biggest favorites in Chiwetel Ejiofor. It became even more surprising when 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture (Drama), a category Dallas...

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association celebrated the best in movies and TV in 2013 with the 71st annual Golden Globes Awards. True to its form, the awards night was a bit unpredictable ("Brooklyn 99" beating "Modern Family" and "Girls" for Best Comedy Series, or "Wolf of Wall Street's" Leonardo DiCaprio winning over Bruce Dern in "Nebraska" or Oscar Isaac for "Inside Llewyn Davis") and predictable ("12 Years a Slave" taking home the Best Film trophy or Cate Blanchett winning Best Actress Drama for "Blue Jasmine").
But it was a fun night with the dynamic duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (who won Best Comedy Actress for "Parks and Recreation") returning as hosts for the second time. There were really no dramas in the evening, except for a few cuss words, and as predicted, Woody Allen did not show up to accept his Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement award.

12 Years a Slave, nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, narrowly avoided getting shut out when it took home the night’s final and biggest prize for Best Drama. Steve McQueen’s period slave drama looked to be out of favor with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with Gravity’s Alfonso Cuaron winning for Best Director, Her’s Spike Jonze winning for Best Screenplay, and the Dallas Buyers Club duo of Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto winning the acting awards. But when Johnny Depp announced the big prize, 12 Years a Slave came out on top.

The Oscar nominations are almost here and that sound you hear is everyone buzzing about what the Academy has in store for us. Come Thursday these predictions will be but a guestimation of what might happen, but before the Golden Globes air, I thought it would be good to give one last check up to my Oscar predictions.
Analysis
-Dallas Buyers Club has done surprisingly well with the guilds in a way I didn’t anticipate when it first premiered and as such has moved up to 7 in my Best Picture predictions. In addition to that, I have Jennifer Garner ousting Julia Roberts from that final Best Supporting Actress. We’re due for some type of out of nowhere acting surprise, and she might well be it.
-It’s a bit foolish to make any real major changes just a few days before the nominations,...

Golden Globes 2014 predictions: ‘American Hustle’ tops? (photo: Amy Adams in ‘American Hustle’) The winners of the 2014 Golden Globes will be announced on Sunday, January 12, 2014 — the same day that two-time Oscar winner Luise Rainer (The Great Ziegfeld, The Good Earth) turns 104 years old. (I’d have said "cosmic," except that Luise Rainer has never won or been nominated for a Golden Globe.) Now, who’s going to take home the dozen or so Golden Globes in the Motion Picture categories? Curiously, there’s no absolute, clear-cut favorite in any of them, except perhaps for David O. Russell’s American Hustle in the Best Comedy or Musical category, even though (or perhaps because) Russell’s ’70s throwback film is not exactly a comedy — and it’s certainly not a musical. (See full list of 2014 Golden Globes nominees.) But who cares about the Golden Globes, anyway? They’re not important. Well, whether or not you find them important,...
