- While training at RADA, got his first acting part as a Nubian steward in the Agatha Christie play "Death on the Nile" at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham.
- Best known for his role as the likeable dog handler P.C. Henry Snow in Softly Softly: Task Force (1969) and as Russia expert Roy Bland in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979).
- National service with the Royal Air Force.
- He became interested in acting while in the Boy Scouts and in grammar school in Birmingham.

- Before achieving acting success in London, he cleaned tables at a Covent Garden restaurant, for which he was paid in sandwiches.
