“It is something that haunts all production designers; it’s something that requires a lot of hard work,” admits four-time Emmy-winning production designer Deborah Riley (“Game of Thrones”) about striving for authenticity and realism, ensuring the look and feel of a series never comes across as too staged or artificial. “It’s layers and layers and layers, and oftentimes it comes down to [for example] a set painter, who will just touch all of those props and touch up all of the walls, and just make sure they feel a little bit lived-in. You know, a bit of a layer of dust over everything helps,” Riley laughs during our recent webchat, adding that, “you’ve got to look at everything and squint slightly and add yourself. You never want anything to feel or look like a prop or dressing. It’s got to feel like someone to put it there for a reason.

“3 Body Problem” production designer Deborah Riley is no stranger to creating epic environments — she won four consecutive Emmys for her work on “Game of Thrones.”
Netflix’s new series reunites Riley with creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss. “That show was vast insofar as cold and hot environments and in its scope and scale, but I had no idea what the term meant until ‘3 Body Problem,’” Riley says, comparing the two shows.
Adapted from the Chinese science-fiction saga by Cixin Liu, the series opens with the Cultural Revolution. Young scientist Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng) watches as her father is beaten to death in front of a crowd by the Red Guard. She’s sent to a top-secret base on the Red Coast where she learns that the Chinese government has been sending transmissions hoping to make contact. The genius mind suggests pointing it at the sun and so a chain of events unfolds,...

With more than 70 schools offering costume design instruction, what makes such a program stand out? Is it the proximity to film studios and theaters in the major entertainment hubs of L.A., London and New York? The variety of courses, from historical design to 3D fabric printing, or simply a well-rounded curriculum? Or is it the chance to network with award-winning alums and industry insiders, coupled with portfolio development and postgrad job placement?

“Our approach was embrace and expand,” reveals production designer Jim Clay about the designing the world of HBO’s epic “House of the Dragon.” For our recent webchat he adds, “There’s a huge fan base there and there would be an expectation from that fun base to continue the feel and be familiar with the world. We wanted to recreate that familiarity and then expand it into our own extended world. We had leeway as ‘House of the Dragon’ is two centuries before ‘Game of Thrones,’ so there’s a little bit of flexibility there. But we wanted the audience to feel they were in the same show, whilst establishing our own show.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Shortly after HBO released Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season, the Golden Globe nominations were unveiled and its considered a surprise that the series was virtually shut out. After the long wait, the truncated final season arrived this year and rather than take a victory lap, it was showered with complaints.
When the series, adapting George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels, arrived, people were stunned at its scope, sweep, violence, sensuality, and strong performances. You weren’t sure who to root for as the status quo kept shifting and beloved characters kept dying in unexpected, messy ways.
Phrases and names seeped into public consciousness just as the series began exhausting the extant prose and then charged ahead while Martin struggled to finish the current novel, in the cycle. Series Executive Producers/Writers/Directors David Benioff & D.B. Weiss got direction from Martin and then increasingly veered off in their own direction.

Australia’s most reluctant Hollywood triumph Hannah Gadsby has capped off a meteoric 18 month ride, securing the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for Netflix Original production, Nanette.
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards celebrate artistic and technical achievements in television and were held over the weekend at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles. The Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on September 21.
Gadsby’s critically lauded and globally embraced Nanette debuted on Netflix in June 2018 and has transformed her career and opportunities at a global level.

At the 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, “Game of Thrones'” craft dominance was a testament to both its cultural impact and cumulative excellence. The HBO juggernaut grabbed 10 awards (out of 18 nominations) for its final season. The series won for casting, fantasy/sci-fi costumes, editing, main title design, music composition, makeup (non-prosthetic), sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt coordination — but significantly, the editing victory for “The Long Night” is the key predictor for next Monday’s outstanding drama Emmy win, since five of the last seven winners have gone on to take the big prize.
The series’ final season was capped by the extraordinary work of costume designer Michele Clapton and the VFX team led by supervisor Joe Bauer. Clapton earned her fifth Emmy, concluding with Sansa’s (Sophie Turner) wolfish coronation gown with metal bodice, wielding both power and respect. And the VFX dwarfed all previous annihilation...

With the “Battle of King’s Landing” from Episode 5 (“The Bells”) of the final “Game of Thrones” season, we finally got to glimpse the immense capital city of the Seven Kingdoms in its entirety, just in time for its total destruction by Mad Queen Dany (Emilia Clarke) and her firebombing Drogon. For production designer Deborah Riley (poised for her fifth and final “GoT” Emmy), it was the most ambitious and important set build of the entire series.
“Having set King’s Landing on location in Dubrovnik in previous years, to build it accurately was very important, but the responsibility of portraying the horror of the aftermath of war was something that we took very seriously and wore very heavily,” said Riley. “More than any other set we had created, the role that it played in the storytelling was more significant than ever. The horrific sight of Dany (Emilia Clarke) turning into the Mad Queen in Season 8 of “Game of Thrones” and vaporizing King’s Landing atop Drogon became the ultimate expression of destruction for the series. Indeed, the “Battle of King’s Landing” from Episode 5 (“The Bells”) dwarfed all previous annihilation, with the VFX stepping up by taking its cue from London after the Blitz and the fire bombing of Dresden toward the end of World War II.
King’s Landing finally comes crashing down during the firebombing, the Clegane brothers (Rory McCann and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) perish from their battle, and the Red Keep castle collapses on Cersei (Lena Headey) and Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). “So, after seven years of building out the physical and sometimes emotional world of ‘Thrones’ through use of visual effects, in ‘The Bells,’ it was time to add an exclamation point,” said Joe Bauer, the lead VFX supervisor.

Miguel Sapochnik didn’t get off on the right foot when he was brought on as a replacement director during “Game of Thrones” Season 5. He had left his passport in Los Angeles and by the time he arrived in Belfast, 30 members of the production team were at a quarry waiting for the director to approve the location for the epic battle in “Hardhome.” Sapochnik, unprepared and not knowing how to respond, simply said, “Sure.”
He was then promptly left by himself in Belfast and told to check out other sets, which were 60 miles apart. Production designer Deborah Riley took pity on the new director and stayed behind to show him around.

Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus may have kept their December wedding out of the public eye as much as possible, but that didn’t stop their not-so-secret newlywed status from being the running joke of the G’Day USA awards gala on Saturday night.

Vaughn continued to prod the couple about the nuptials at every turn in his speech, prompting a middle finger from Cyrus and several eye-rubs from Hemsworth.

The HBO juggernaut also won for period/fantasy production design, fantasy/sci-fi costume design, sound mixing, prosthetic makeup, and stunt coordination.
FX’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” followed right behind with four craft Emmys.

While there was an overwhelming amount of challenges to face with Season 7 of HBO’s Game of Thrones, in production designer Deborah Riley’s mind, all roads lead back to Dragonstone as the crux of it all.
Daenerys Targaryen’s arrival at her ancestral home in the season opener was “a massive moment for the character and a huge opportunity for the art department”—and Riley fully felt the moment’s weight. “Dragonstone was the piece of the puzzle that I was most excited about. The outline described so many elements that were going to need to fit together, both locations and set builds. I also felt a great responsibility in helping to tell the story of the character through the presentation of the space,” Riley shares. “I knew from the start that it was going to take careful planning to make it work as a believable whole.”

In the penultimate “Game of Thrones” seventh season, Daenerys’ absolute quest for power informed both the production and costume design of perennial Emmy winners Deborah Riley and Michele Clapton. Highlights included the imposing Dragonstone Throne Room set and striking winter coat, which were symbolic of Dany’s confidence and strength.
“In the top shot, it was important to be able to show Daenerys [Emilia Clarke] crossing the space for the first time, the strength of her family history built into the fabric of the space,” said three-time Emmy winner Riley of her nominated production design in “Dragonstone.”

When it comes to Emmy nominations for below-the-line talent, traditional broadcaster NBC more than held its own in the major Creative Arts categories, tying HBO and besting juggernaut Netflix. The Peacock network broadcast three of the 13 shows that amassed seven or more noms in such areas as cinematography, production design and editing. HBO also had three shows in that arena; FX and Netflix each scored two, while Amazon, Hulu and Showtime each had one. Here’s an appraisal of those strongly crafted programs by some of the artisans who helped create them.
Atlanta / FX (seven noms)
The challenges facing editor Kyle Reiter on “Atlanta” were not the usual ones, “where you’re fixing problems and searching for the best takes,” he says. All the performances are so good that “there are an infinite number of ways of dealing with it, and it’s simply daunting.” It helped, he adds, that...

The most fascinating aspect of the “Game of Thrones” presence at this year’s Emmys is the fact that the show took a year off. The first six seasons were an annual presence at “TV’s biggest night,” becoming relatively predictable for their ability to dominate, especially in the below-the-line categories. But the HBO fantasy drama was absent from the 2017 awards after premiering too late in the year to qualify, allowing a whole new crop of dramas to vie for glory.
That delay meant that one of TV’s winning-est series is eligible again this year, and anyone who might have thought a summer premiere would lead to a decrease in nominations was very much mistaken; the veteran series received 22 nominations for its seventh season, the most of any show. However, many of those upstart new dramas are still in the race, making this year’s competition a fascinating one.

Despite winning three Emmy Awards for their work on “Game of Thrones,” set decorator Rob Cameron and production designer Deborah Riley had never been nominated by the BAFTAs until this year. However, first time proved to be the charm as they prevailed in a tough race against teams from the satirical series “Black Mirror,” the historical drama “The Crown” and the political thriller “The State.”
I kicked off our lively conversation backstage by asking if it was difficult to simply watch the finished episodes or whether they sat in front of their TVs and critiqued their sets and designs. Riley readily admitted, “When I first read the script, I’m definitely a fan. With the second read, I become a member of the crew. It’s when I become serious.” Concurred Cameron, “When we’re watching the episodes I definitely just look at what we’ve done and analyze it.

We should go ahead and rename December 12th “Arrow Video Day,” because the fine fiends over there have a ton of titles coming out this Tuesday, including Special Edition sets for The Premonition and Malatesta’s Carnival of Blood, and they’ve also put together standalone special edition Blu-rays for both House and House II: The Second Story. Severin Films is resurrecting Asylum this Tuesday, and fans can finally get their hands on the latest season of Game of Thrones, as well as a box set featuring every episode from all seven seasons.
Other notable releases for December 12th include K-Shop, Once Upon A Time at Christmas, Brackenmore, The Snake Woman, Beware the Lake, and Hollow Creek.

Out today is the Blu-ray edition of Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season from HBO Home Entertainment.
We previously reviewed the Digital HD version of the season here but there are new elements to consider with the box set.
The vast majority of Digital HD releases do not come with the bonus features, extra, and Easter Eggs we have come to know and love about the disc format. As a result, the Digital HD version is a nice add-on for on-the-go viewing, but the complete immersive experience, the special features add interviews, behind-the-scenes information, commentary, and deleted scenes to enhance your appreciation of the material. This season set, though, does come with some, but all, the extras found on the Blu-ray box set.
This season was a mixed bag with incredibly strong storytelling undercutting its strength by not surprising us. No one, except readers of the novel, expected...
