This year’s 59th edition of the Newport Folk Festival provided another continuous three-day dose of first-rate music, thanks to an inspired and unpredictable lineup. Featuring a list of unannounced artists that included everyone from pop-leaning breakout stars Maggie Rogers and Leon Bridges to beloved legends Mavis Staples and John Prine, the festival was brimming with constant surprise collaboration and companionship, culminating in Mumford & Sons’ unannounced headlining set on Saturday evening. Between the youthful musings of Phoebe Bridgers, the veteran wisdom of Toots & the Maytals, the gospel-r&B revivalism of...

David Massey today announced the leadership and initial artists for Work of Art, the music-publishing and artist-management companies under his new joint venture with Sony Music Entertainment.
Work of Art Music Publishing is based in New York and Los Angeles, and led by Clio Massey, who will serve as VP. In this role, she will oversee the development of a roster of artists and songwriters from multiple musical genres. Also joining the publishing team is Zach Felber, who is based in Los Angeles and will serve as Creative Manager, working with Clio. Sony/Atv will administer the publishing venture.
As announced earlier this month, Massey will also be the president and CEO of a relaunched Arista Records, which will become an “all-new frontline creative center” within Sony Music. Actress Olivia Cole, best known for her performances in Roots and The Women of Brewster Place, passed away on January 19. She was 75.
Cole died in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, her agent, Susie Schwarz at Sbb Partners, told Variety. Her cause of death is currently unknown.
“She was a very eccentric woman and a wonderful woman,” Schwarz said of Cole, who didn’t own a cell phone and shied away from technology.
Cole was born in Memphis, and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
She returned to the U.S. in 1964 and appeared in "Romeo and Juliet" at the American Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut.
In 1966, Cole made her Broadway debut in a revival of "The School for Scandal" — just one of the many stage appearances during her career — and then landed a gig as Deborah Mehren on CBS soap opera The Guiding Light.

Here’s another installment featuring Joe Dante’s reviews from his stint as a critic for Film Bulletin circa 1969-1974. Our thanks to Video Watchdog and Tim Lucas for his editorial embellishments!
Atrocious horror‑sex item. No Rating.
Typical sex‑horror stuff, this New York‑made Jer Pictures release looks like a home movie from Bedlam and gives evidence of having been processed in a dirty bathtub. Several semi‑nude love scenes are included, but director‑photographer Andy Milligan’s real interest is in the gory murders, which are much more explicit. Blood flows copiously, bodies are chopped-up and characters are set afire in gruesome, though hardly convincing, fashion. With all these ingredients for acceptance in its own somewhat special market, the Jerome‑Fredric production is handicapped by its own incredible cheapness and ineptitude, plus a deadly slowness in the pacing. Fuzzily photographed in bleary color and blown up from 16 (or perhaps 8) millimeter,...
