Mickey Rooney Jr., the eldest son of Hollywood actor Mickey Rooney who went on to a show business career of his own that included being an original – if short-lived — Mouseketeer, an actor and a member of Willie Nelson’s band, died Saturday at his home in Glendale, Az. He was 77.
His death was announced by Paul Petersen, the former actor and founder of advocacy group A Minor Consideration. Petersen, who posted the news on Facebook, did not specify a cause but said Rooney died peacefully.

Rooney Jr. played in bands with Willie Nelson as well as appearing alongside him in “Honeysuckle Rose” and “Songwriter.” He helped score the soundtrack to John Brahm’s “Hot Rods to Hell,” which he also had a small role in. In 1975, he had a role in the NBC movie “Beyond the Bermuda Triangle.”

Bert I. Gordon’s career groove of shrinking and bloating various animals and people bottoms out in this trashy drive-in groaner: it’s colorful but nigh-unwatchable. The exploitation target is sci-fi and the teen musical, with incompatible helpings of pre-teen ‘cutes’ and girlie show jiggle for the raincoat crowd. The show apparently did well, but I heard mostly about resentful walkouts. Gordon’s early films have far more charm; this one mostly shows contempt for his audience. For fans that think there’s Camp value here, the Blu-ray transfer is sensationally good, as is the reproduction of Jack Nitzsche’s rock music score. The only thing to call this movie is Poor, but how can that be when I find so much to say about it?

Hollywood Vampires: The Birth of Midnight Movies on L.A.'s Sunset Strip is a three-part series of essays by Tim Concannon.Once Upon A Time On The Sunset STRIP1969 on the Sunset Strip was a period of dislocation, dissipation and dissolution from which the Hollywood of the Seventies emerged. A movie theatre adjoining Santa Monica Boulevard, where the Underground Cinema 12 film festival held sold-out midnight shows attended by thousands of Freaks, is an overlooked catalyst of L.A.'s underground scene, alongside Pandora's Box, the club recreated in Riot On the Sunset Strip (1967) and which was the focus of the November 1966 Sunset Strip disturbances.Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time...in Hollywood—which is woven around the Manson family murders in 1969, though it isn't focused on them—is situated in the same unsettling hinterland between film stardom and savage violence that Peter Bogdanovich's Targets touches on as well.

You may have seen Jurassic Park a dozen times, but there loads of details that are easy to miss. Details like these...
Last week, visual effects artist Todd Vaziri took to Twitter to shatter the illusions of Jurassic Park fans everywhere. "When people watch this 24-year old mega-blockbuster," he tweeted, "they point and laugh at the totally obvious disappearing raptor on each viewing, ya?"
See related James Bond 007: revisiting Never Say Never Again
What, Todd? The what!?
Alongside this tweet, Vaziri also posted a slowed down Gif of the moment in question and - yep - there it is. During the final set piece, in which the T-Rex (somehow silently) stomps into the Visitor's Centre and gobbles up the Velociraptors, one of the Raptors disappears. Not eaten by the Rex, just gone. One frame, she's there, the next she's not, the following one she's there again.

The world of film-related books has been dominated by Star Wars for the last two years, and that’s not a bad thing. With insightful authors like Pablo Hidalgo and gorgeous efforts like Star Wars: Galactic Maps, there has never been a better time to be force-crazed. This month is no exception, but you’ll also find new releases about Hitchcock, the Marx Brothers, and even two involving X-Files prequels. Let’s start with a book that took on new relevance just weeks after its release.
The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher (Blue Rider Press)
Carrie Fisher’s The Princess Diarist, a hilarious and touching look at her life as Star Wars icon Princess Leia, was a must-read even before the sudden, shocking passing of its author in December. It is even more poignant now. While the book earned pre-release buzz over its revelation of an on-set affair with Harrison Ford,...

Today is the Centennial of one of the most singular character actresses of the 1950s, Mercedes McCambridge, born in Joliet Illinois on this very day in 1916. We hope you've enjoyed our mini retrospective. We previousy discussed her sensational debut in All The King's Men (1949) her final Oscar nomination for the Texas epic Giant (1956) and her sorry fate in a teensy part in the Airport disaster series. (In the past, Icymi, we've amply discussed The Exorcist in which she did truly legendary voice work as well as the fiery abandon of must-see western Johnny Guitar.)
In The Concorde... Airport '79 article, Tim talked about the disaster genre's often ...um... disastrous treatment of aged film stars in cameos. But discarded stars of Old Hollywood also frequently collected paychecks through TV guest spots. On the small screen there was the same roulette wheel chances at success. As fans of shows like Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and Mork & Mindy, we already knew we enjoyed the sitcom stylings of magical mishaps in real life, so we were kind of excited to check out this 60th Anniversary DVD collection by Mpi Home Video of My Favorite Martian. For those of you who don’t know (because we didn’t), My Favorite Martian aired on CBS from 1963 – 1966 and pretty much started the whole genre of fantasty/sci-fi TV comedies. The show is about Tim O’Hara (played by Bill Bixby), a newspaper reporter who meets a Martian (played by Ray Walston) and keeps him as his “Uncle Martin.” For three seasons, chaos and hilarity ensue as Uncle Martin’s Martian magic powers get in the way of living a regular Earthling life.

Are you tired of the cracker jack, straight laced heroes getting all the spotlight now that Breaking Bad, Dexter, and Hannibal have all been concluded or cancelled? Then, Vertoscope might be the comic for you. Co-edited by comics artists Nechama Frier (Smut Peddler, Red Rabbit) and Ten Van Winkle, Vertoscope is a 200 page graphic novel anthology featuring sixteen black and white shorts spanning a variety of genres focusing on villains. It’s like the early 2000s Mickey’s House of Villains cartoon, but much more nuanced and featuring the catchy tagline “A villainous collection by many devious minds.”
This is a personal project for Frier and Van Winkle, and in the official press release they say that Vertoscope “is brought to you by creators who have sat through dozens of movies, books, and comics falling in love with the despicable characters. We don’t hate the hero or happy ending,...

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill took their love to the Tomorrowland premiere at Disneyland on Saturday. The country couple held hands while hitting the red carpet at the park in Anaheim, CA, and things only got more picture-perfect from there. As Faith lit up with a big smile, Tim held her hand up to his lips and gave her a kiss. They weren't the only couple to show off their connection at the event, as Tim's costar George Clooney showered wife Amal with plenty of Pda. The fun premiere follows up Tim's shirtless workout session from earlier this month and the couple's appearance at the Time 100 Gala in late April. Tim and Faith had some adorable company for that special occasion: their three daughters, who are practically grown up. Keep reading to see Tim and Faith's new pictures.

The holidays are finally upon us, and in celebration we're posting five fun facts about our favorite festive flicks.Today's featured film is the 1994 Christmas classic, "The Santa Clause." Check out the gallery below to see what young star Eric Lloyd (left) looks like today!1. It was a big deal to have Tim Allen starring in a Disney movie, as the company has a history of not hiring ex-cons. Allen had a drug charge from the '70s, but they made an exception after seeing the positive reaction to Tim on "Home Improvement." He'd work with Disney again on the "Toy Story" films.2. In the 1995 VHS version of the film, Tim Allen made a sarcastic remark, "1-800-spank-me," to hisex-wife. The scene was taken out of the later movie releases because a mom complained it wasa real sex hotline number. Her child had called it and racked up a massive phone bill!

Netflix streaming is upping the ante this December, adding enough high-profile TV shows and movies to more than make up for last month's lackluster offerings.
On the movie side, highlights include Will Ferrell and gang in "Anchorman 2," the Heath Ledger-starring "A Knight's Tale," Cameron Crowe classic "Almost Famous," Oscar-winning "American Beauty," and horror hits "Oculus" and "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones." Oh, and let's not forget '80s classic "Troop Beverly Hills," '90s cult favorite "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion," or Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Wolf of Wall Street."
And there's plenty to love about what's coming on the TV front: "American Horror Story: Coven" finally gets its day on Netflix, "Sharknado 2" storms its way to streaming, and Brit hit "Broadchurch" finally lands stateside. Oh, and December sees the premiere of the hotly anticipated Netflix Original series "Marco Polo" on the 12th.

Amir here, reporting to box office duty. Finally, the day cinephiles have been waiting for all year has arrived. America gets the chance to see one of our greatest working directors bring his epic vision to the screen. I speak, of course, of Frederick Wiseman's National Gallery, which opened on one screen to respectable returns. Others were too busy checking out Big Hero 6 and Interstellar. Disney's animated film actually topped the charts – I did not expect it to overcome Nolan's juggernaut, if I'm being honest – but both film finished with more than $50 in the bank. This is an incredibly rare feat: even though it's happened for the third year in a row now, it's only the fourth time that two films open with 50+ numbers. On all three previous occasions, an animated film beat a live action one: Wall-e and Wanted, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Prometheus, and...

"Boardwalk Empire" has come to an end. As I've done after each previous season — and as I also did at the start of this final one, just because of the big time jump and the decision to end the show — I spoke with the show's creator Terence Winter about everything that went down, and how he arrived at the various fates for Nucky, Margaret, Chalky, and his other creations, in addition to how he intertwined them with the real-life stories of Lucky Luciano, Al Capone and company. My finale review is here, and the Winter interview is coming up just as soon as I ask you an important question about Marlene Dietrich... How does it feel to be only a few days away from the finale airing? Terence Winter: Really bittersweet. It's funny; there's still "Boardwalk Empire"-related business that I have to do. Doing interviews, obviously, but little things for post,...

There is a reason I'm a Batman fan. It's not because I'm a life-long comic book reader. That came later. And it's not because I grew up watching reruns of the old ABC television series. Though I certainly did. It's because Tim Burton's "Batman," released in theaters 25 years ago today, was the first movie that really owned my anticipatory faculties as a child. It was the first film that lit my movie-going fire, a designation saved for "Star Wars," "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "E.T." a generation prior and perhaps "Jurassic Park" and Harrison Ford's actioners a generation later. In the simplest of terms, I wouldn't be a film obsessive if it weren't for "Batman." I owe it that much. For me, the film was an event not to be missed. I remember watching the commercials flood prime time television: the howling of a Batwing circling a Gothic cathedral,...

Tim here, with a quick bit of news: the International Animated Film Society has announced the nominees for the 41st Annie Awards. Unsurprisingly, it's heavily tilted towards big studio fare, with Despicable Me 2 dominating the list with eleven nominations, Monsters University and Frozen with ten nominations apiece, and The Croods just a breath behind with nine.
In the short categories (Best Animated Special Production, Best Animated Short), three of the films on the Oscar bake-off list made the Annies' cut: British TV special "Room on the Broom", the Canadian "Gloria Victoria", and Disney's tech-heavy new Mickey short, "Get a Horse!"
The full list of nominees is here. For now, I'll leave you with the nominations for Voice Acting, entirely men aside from Wiig. (The corresponding TV category is 100% male)

Tim here. Today, the short film Steamboat Willie celebrates the 85th anniversary of its theatrical debut. And that makes today, according to Disney, the 85th birthday of Mickey Mouse, cinema icon and greatest company mascot in the history of mascots. This despite Steamboat Willie being only the third Mickey short completed (it was, however, the first one commercially distributed). But if the giant media conglomerate wants to semi-arbitrarily choose by diktat which day we are to gather in celebration of their most famous son, who I am to disagree?
Anyway, It’s an ideal excuse to revisit Steamboat Willie, one of the best of all early sound cartoons. Of which it was not the first, no matter what you might have heard; it’s certainly the most technologically sophisticated, though, and the one that introduces the idea that animals and inanimate objects make melodically squeaky noises when you poke at them.

But on Thursday night, an annoyed Cowell rolled his eyes when it was revealed that not only was Olivero, 24, staying put this week, but that he was the first contestant to make it through to the top 10.
Adding insult to injury, the girl group Sweet Suspense – whose performance of the Tony Basil song "Mickey" left Cowell raving that they were "the best of the night" on Wednesday – was sent home...

Sadly, two acts were eliminated tonight — but luckily we saw amazing performances from Selena Gomez and Fifth Harmony to cheer us up! Read on for more details.
The Nov. 14 episode was a real nail-biter, since it was the X Factor‘s first Elimination Thursday. Were you upset about the two acts that were cut, HollywoodLifers?
Selena Gomez & Fifth Harmony Perform On The ‘X Factor’
There’s nothing like fun performances from pop stars to get everyone in a true X Factor mood!
Selena Gomez, 21, graced viewers with her presence, dressed in a slinky black outfit, with black boots to match. She surrounded herself with back-up dancers for an electrifying performance of her chart-topping smash, “Slow Down.” With her energy and stage presence, we’re thinking Selena could teach the current crop of contestants a thing or two about having the “x” factor.
Fifth Harmony also performed their hit single, “Me and My Girls,...

Chug, chug, chug. The X Factor keeps lurching along despite an embarrassing voting glitch and record-low ratings. And it's doubtful its lackluster, borderline unwatchable Eighties night will help matters.
After last week's clusterfuck that saw all of America's votes thrown out on the very first night viewers had their say, it's hard to feel invested. And since the show had to scrap last week's elimination in favor of a do-over, they unceremoniously tossed Boys category member Carlos Guevara at the beginning of this week's show. The top 12 contestants on the ‘X Factor’ brought us back to the ’80s tonight — big hair included — and one act was eliminated! Keep reading for all the details.
Proving that the ’80s are always in style, The X Factor‘s final 12 contestants channeled Madonna, Pat Benatar and more on the competition show’s Nov. 13 episode. Read on for HollywoodLife.com‘s take on the evening, including our favorite acts!
‘The X Factor’: Top 12 Perform ’80s Hits
Tonight’s show started on a sad note, when Carlos Guevara got voted off! Last week, he performed “What’s Going On,” and it left the judges asking themselves that very same question. “I thought it was cool for your voice,” Kelly Rowland told him, “but you could have done better.” That was our signal that he would be the first to go!

The X Factor was all about big hair and even bigger results Wednesday night.
Carlos Guevara was the first Top 13 contestant to be eliminated as the show kicked off by announcing results after last week's technical glitch nullified the voting.
Then it was back to the '80s, as the contestants took on songs from the era of Madonna's fingerless-gloved heyday.
Lillie McCloud, 54, who kicked off the night with Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody," impressed judges by making the song current and prompted Simon Cowell to ask, "You're a naughty little thing, aren't you?"

Informal poll time, X Factor watchers!
The most confounding portion of tonight’s Top 12 performance telecast was:
A. Paulina Rubio’s continued employment in the face of her enthusiastic incompetence
B. Paulina’s insistence on using the word “America” while introducing her acts (Gurrl, it’ll take more than that to win us over, I’m afraid)
C. The screaming of the lambs audience
D. Mario Lopez’s obscene attempt to recreate a classic Michael Jackson dance move
E. Writhing ladies leading into various ad breaks (I didn’t hallucinate that, did I?)

When we join "The X Factor," host Mario Lopez informs us that it's '80s night -- but he emphasizes hits from the nineteen-eighties, which really makes us wonder if he thinks anybody is confused it might be the eighteen-eighties.
Meanwhile, the female judges are decked out in their best '80s attire, which is awesome. Scroogey old Simon, however, cannot be bothered to put a suit jacket on over his plain white t-shirt and rock a Crockett and/or Tubbs look. For shame, Cowell.
However, we must eliminate someone first. You know, we hope they told the act who was eliminated last week when it actually happened so that he or she didn't have to rehearse all this week like normal. That just seems mean.
Anyway, Carlos Guevara is eliminated and for once, America got it exactly right. He had a couple very rough nights, he shouldn't have advanced out of the four-chair challenge.

Hi everyone, Tim here. Those who know me in my other life at Antagony & Ecstasy are well aware of my affection for animation in its many forms, and starting this week, that’s going to be carried over here to the Film Experience. Officially, as of now, this space will be home to a weekly column about the current world of animation with, I suspect, regular guest appearances from classics of both American and international animated cinema.
And there's some pretty exciting news to kick things off. Right on the heels of the announcement of the 19 films submitted for consideration this year in the feature category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the ten-film list of titles that will be competing for the Best Animated Short Oscar. It feels a little bit like a course correction after last year, which saw two major studio releases hit...

Tim here. 2013 has proven to be a banner year for Mickey Mouse, the lovable corporate spokesman, marketing juggernaut, and justification for some of the most ruinous developments in copyright law history. I believe he has also, at some point, featured in cartoons.
To celebrate the 85th anniversary of the character, the Walt Disney Company has promoted a new series of made-for-tv shorts bringing his troublemaking side back to the fore after generations of sanding have turned him into a perfectly respectable, deeply bland mascot (I’ll confess to not liking these shorts much at all, but I’m glad they exist). Later this fall, he’ll be starring in a brand-new, old-style cartoon, Get a Horse!, set to play in front of Disney’s winter tentpole Frozen.
With so much Mickey flying around, it was impossible not to pounce at the 75th anniversary this week of one of my very favorite shorts starring the character,...

This past Thursday afternoon, Sony Animation unveiled some early unfinished footage of its upcoming release, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" (opening on September 27). "Cloudy 2" is, of course, the sequel to the 2009 hit film that was loosely based on the popular book by Judi and Ron Barrett. Sadly, we can't just show you the footage, but we can tell you about it! (Which, misleading exclamation point aside, is admittedly a disappointment. We will do our best.)

Sorry for the delay on this one. Last night got away from me a little. Okay, a lot. Like Mickey's multiplying brooms in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" the problems in finding blog time just kept expanding. But here we are. This week I asked the Best Shot club to look at Disney's ambitious Fantasia and choose their Best Shot from the "Rite of Spring" sequence since that riot-inducing Stravinsky composition is now 100 years old and I have a thing for Centennials. Ambitious "Sorcerer" level bloggers were asked to also choose a best shot not from the film as a whole but one from each musical sequence.
Refresh your screen periodically for more...
Cinesnatch I knew Vinci would go the sorcerer level and choose a shot from each segment because he does that anyway even when I don't ask. Image explosions every week over at that blog!

Lightning strikes the clock tower in Back to the Future. Panoramic helicopter shots sweep over the hills of Middle-earth in Lord of the Rings. Jack and Rose hold each other on the bow of the Titanic. You may not know the name Ariana Richards, but odds are you've seen her before, as a young girl screaming in an overturned SUV while a tyrannosaurus rex came barreling down from above. At the age of 12, Richards was cast in Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster "Jurassic Park" as Lex, a girl who visits her grandfather's new dinosaur-inhabited theme park. This week, audiences get to hear Richards push her vocal chords to their limits once again on the big screen, as "Jp" hits theaters in 3D, 20 years after its release. While she now spends most of her time as an artist (you can see her work here), Richards looks back fondly on her "Jurassic Park" days. Richards spoke to us about filming "Jurassic Park," keeping in touch with Spielberg (she calls him Steven), taking a spin on the "Jurassic Park" ride at Universal Studios, and her first acting credit, on "The Golden Girls.

Previously on Glee, Emma left Will at the altar, and all the sex was had that day. Spurred into action by the memory of their many failed nuptials, Rachel and Finn did (unprotected?) things to each other. Buying into the guise of "bros helping bros," Kurt and Blaine also did things. Under the influence of much wine and even more dance floor canoodling, Quinn and Santana did scissor-type things — twice. Also, Kurt said "VapoRape" and Brittany and Santana stared forlornly at each other and Becky the Flower Girl was a modern marvel. Oh, and Brody was a gigolo.

Emma Pillsbury is looking ever so fly in a lady-tuxedo and performing a black-and-white rendition of "You Are All the World to Me" a la Fred Astaire in Royal Wedding. It's edited together like a single take, which is almost as impressive as the fact this show has been able...

Not surprisingly, Frankenweenie brought a lot of fans to theaters. A kind of self-tribute for Tim Burton, and a return to animated adventures that have won over millions, Frankenweenie offered a multi-pronged attack on inciting interest.
Though not without its detractors (me, to a certain degree, among them), the film managed a great response, including solid positioning on many a top ten list. Even for those not completely sold on the effort, there is a lot to love about the film, especially if the genre homage lands.
The story, a reworking of Burton’s own short (included with the home release), may include monsters and a certain degree of mayhem, but it delivers on its celebration of friendship, childhood, and a boy’s love for his dog. It’s a quirky mix, but one that showcases the power of sci-fi in telling stories that deliver reality better for their lack of reality.

Tom Hanks has a problem with his dressing room.
The two-time Oscar winner and generally agreed-upon national treasure has just arrived backstage at UCLA's Freud Playhouse, dragging a duffel bag in each hand with his wife, Rita Wilson, trailing behind. In the last of our Frankenweenie roundtable interviews, Dread Central was on hand to catch up with two of the funniest cast members of the flick- Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short.
Both "Sctv" and Tim Burton alums, O'Hara and Short also pull triple duty on the filmmaker's latest stop-motion animated flick, both lending their voices to three different characters in the flick. During the recent press day held at Disneyland, we heard more from Short and O'Hara about reteaming with Burton, voicing their characters and a whole lot of funny business in between.
Check out the highlights from the Frankenweenie roundtable below and look for movie to arrive in theaters everywhere tomorrow!
Question: Had you guys seen sketches of your characters and sketches of the environment you’d be working in before you began doing the voices for the film?
Catherine O'Hara: Absolutely.
