In 1989's "Road House," lifelong nightclub cooler/bouncer/warrior John Dalton (Patrick Swayze) shrugs off his various injuries with a sly phrase: "Pain don't hurt." Yet his lady love, Dr. Elizabeth Clay (Kelly Lynch), warns him that while he may shrug away pain right now, years later his injuries will catch up to him and pain will start to hurt very, very much. That's a truth which many athletes, servicepeople, and actors find themselves facing in their middle age and up, one which younger versions of themselves would do well to heed.
One such actor facing that reality is Sylvester Stallone, a star whose career off-screen greatly mirrors his typical journey on-screen. Just like the character closest to his real self, Rocky Balboa, Stallone does his best work when he's got something to prove, whether to himself, to Hollywood, the public, or some combination thereof. It's a huge motivator but...

After Russell Crowe’s story about his brutal injury on the sets of Robin Hood, Sylvester Stallone has now revealed how he sustained an even brutal spine injury while working in The Expendables. Stallone made this revelation on his reality television show, The Family Stallone, which also stars his wife, Jennifer Flavin, and three daughters. The injury occurred during a botched stunt where he was tackled by none other than WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin.

While Crowe and Stallone’s revelations show the extent to which actors were willing to go to entertain their audience, a few feel that bragging about recklessness is not the way to go about it. It was not the first instance where Sylvester Stallone risked a life-threatening injury on a movie set.

2023 may have been a great year for movies, but not even Oppenheimer could have made a bigger bomb this year than the long-delayed fourth adventure for Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham’s action superteam: The Expendables 4 (aka EXPEND4BLES)!
It’s been nine long years since Expendables 3 let action fans down with its toned down PG-13 rating, but Stallone promised to make it worth the wait with his final R-rated turn at age 77 as Barney Ross, handing over the guns and grenades for most of the film to Statham’s Lee Christmas as he and the new team stop a villainous mercenary and the rogue CIA agent he’s working for (who may or may not be a visibly bored Andy Garcia) from kicking off World War III. Unfortunately, the cast lineup they have to work with exchanges actual action stars like Bruce and Arnold for the youth friendly...

If The Expendables 4 is failing to explode at the box office – and it is, pulling in a franchise-worst $8.3 million on opening weekend – there could be a few factors at play. One of the biggest is that series stalwart Sylvester Stallone doesn’t have as big of a role as he did in the previous entries. Now, The Expendables’ heir apparent, Jason Statham, has stepped in to explain the lack of Sly.
Speaking with Cinema Express, Jason Statham said Stallone’s smaller presence in The Expendables 4 works but he is definitely missed. “In this particular story, he is absent for reasons we don’t talk about, we have to guide ourselves through the ocean without him. There is something about not having him around that doesn’t feel right. So, we are getting through, the story is the story, we are trying to do our best, but the best...

When a movie franchise drops the number of a sequel directly into its title, you know things are about to get serious. That’s why fans are so excited for “Expend4bles,” the newest installment in the explosive “Expendables” franchise that officially heads to theaters on Friday, Sept. 22, though preview screenings started earlier this week.
“Expend4bles” follows this motley group of heroes around the world on another set of outlandish adventures. This time, the group has to prevent all-out nuclear war from devastating the globe, and they’ll have to do it with some new faces in key positions. The Expendables have never fallen down on the job before, but when the stakes are highest they’ll have to turn it up to 11 to save the world yet again.
The movie might not be considered high art, as its 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes would suggest. But audiences who go into “Expend4bles...

The 80s era was memorable for a lot of things, but especially for the rise of iconic action heroes like Rambo, Dutch, Ripley, Sarah Conner, and John McClane, to name a few, portrayed by legendary actors who forever changed the landscape of the genre. Their screen presence, insistence on the portrayal of physicality in action sequences, and larger-than-life appearance have captivated generations of fans ever since—and led to the franchise boom in the first place. Long before studio-wide superhero crossovers took over Hollywood, it was a dream of every action movie fan to see their favorite stars sharing the screen together, and Sylvester Stallone, an action legend himself, fulfilled the dream by creating The Expendables franchise. The franchise is now three movies strong, and after a prolonged nine-year gap, the fourth part is about to crush theaters worldwide this weekend.

Major spoilers for "Expend4bles" follow.
Ever since "The Expendables" was released in 2010, the identity and tone of the franchise has been heavily in question. That first film seemed to want to have things both ways, presenting the trials and tribulations of the (very fictional) titular team of mercenaries while metatextually commenting on (and piggybacking off of) the action stars playing them. Put another way, it's as if the crossover formula seen in Marvel's "The Avengers" franchise was reversed: the coming together of the film's stars are the big draw, while the characters are (at least initially) not well known.
While 2012's "The Expendables 2" leaned far more into the meta aspects of people like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris showing up in the same film, 2014's "The Expendables 3" attempted to find a similar balance to the first film, establishing its characters in their own right while still...

Review: Millennium Media has taken nine years to develop a fourth entry into the Expendables series. Things have changed in the near-decade since the last movie, which is reflected in the fact that this series instalment is much smaller scale than the ones that came before it. It’s primarily a spin-off entry for Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas, with the titular Expendables only supporting our hero on a personal mission, with Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross contributing little more than a cameo.
While that’s undeniably disappointing, Expend4bles is still a fun enough action flick if you keep your expectations in check. The budget seems much smaller than it was for the previous films, with abysmal CGI. Most of the action is confined to a cargo ship, as the Expendables...

In “Expend4bles,” the action is more digitally propulsive than it was in “The Expendables” (2010), “The Expendables 2” (2012), or “The Expendables 3” (2014). Yet the preferred mode of killing is reassuringly primitive. In scene after scene, characters use knives to slit people’s throats, or they’ll sometimes jam a knife directly into the throat. “Expend4bles” is punctuated by those quick homicidal bursts of blood spatter. They’re effective, but because they feel a lot like the video-game slashings in a “John Wick” movie, the defining spirit of the “Expendables” series — the aging action heroes of the Reagan era all gathered together for a big dumb neo-’80s marathon of old-school combat destruction — now feels nearly as far away as the ’80s did when the first movie came out.
The first two “Expendables” films had a relatively stable cast, with Easter Egg cameos by folks like Chuck Norris and Arnold Schwarzenegger. But...

The on-screen figures in the "Expendables" movies aren't so much characters as they are human-shaped bundles of toxically masculine clichés and blind, violent impulses wrapped in skull-emblazoned kevlar. They lurch about on-screen like Frankensteinian monsters, living piles of jock straps and congealed taurine drinks, belching out monosyllabic action flick catchphrases in between Don Julio-instigated brawls and violent, bullet-riddled missions in other countries. These characters have no thoughts, no humanity, no sense of morals or righteousness. They have no desires other than a distant lizard-brain perception that soldiers in other countries probably need to blow up. "G.I. Joe" is more sophisticated.

Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and their band of badasses infiltrate theaters this weekend with Expend4bles, and predictions for the action film’s weekend box office have arrived! According to analysts, the Millennium Media and Lionsgate thrill ride could earn between $15 million-$17 million during opening weekend.
The predicted total puts the latest film in the Expendables saga close to Expendables 3, which opened in 2014 with $15.8 million. Males over 25 generate the most tickets for action films starring ’80s icons and celebrated martial artists like Iko Uwais and Tony Jaa. It’s worth noting that Expend4bles heads to 700 Plf screens this weekend, including Xd, Rpx, Dolby, and D Box. The film’s availability on high-profile screens and the hard R rating could boost its popularity throughout its debut.

Every year, the fall film festival season (try saying that five times fast) brings all sorts of discussion points to those who of us who are way too plugged into such things, from Academy Awards buzz for certain performances and movies to potentially controversial subject matter on the horizon and everything in between. But, ideally, these sorts of early screenings also help put certain kinds of movies on the radar for a wider range of audiences, shining a spotlight on titles that many might not have even heard of before. And, in some cases, a wave of overwhelmingly positive critic reactions and reviews can play a big role in helping them land distribution partners at a pretty penny.
Such appears to be the case with "Hit Man," the latest movie by acclaimed filmmaker Richard Linklater. Upon debuting at this year's Venice Film Festival and swiftly building up even more hype...

The fourth chapter of the Expendables franchise, Expend4bles, is converging on the top spot at the box office in China after the weekend. Details from the consultancy firm Artisan Gateway say Expedend4bles earned $10.9M during its debut. While the sequel fails to include a Chinese star, it features Jason Statham, whose films typically perform well in the territory.
Expend4bles narrowly edged Dust to Dust out of the top spot, which snagged $10.6M after its second week in cinemas. After ten days of release, Dust encountered a 52% week-on-week decline but managed a $44.2M total.
Expend4bles could open with a bigger bang in North American territories, where Stallone, Statham, and the rest of the action superstar crew cater to fans of explosive action cinema.

It may be a little hard to believe but it has been just shy of a decade since Sylvester Stallone and his fellow action stars last graced the screen as "The Expendables." The original trilogy concluded rather unceremoniously in 2014 with the disappointment that was "The Expendables 3." It's been long enough that Stallone had time to revive both the "Rocky" and "Rambo" franchises while he was away from the role of mercenary Barney Ross. But everything old finds a way to become new again. Case in point, "Expendables 4" or "Expend4bles" is set to hit theaters next weekend. The question is, can it serve as enough of a course correction and bring the series back to its former glory?
As it stands, the film's financial prospects look iffy at best. According to Box Office Pro, director Scott Waugh's "Expend4ables" is currently targeting an opening weekend in the $10 to $15 million range.

Lionsgate will soon figure out if it can live without Barney Ross.

Machine guns. Knife-fights. An aircraft carrier doing a handbrake turn in the middle of the ocean. Yep, the Expendables 4 trailer is here at last – or, if you’d rather, the Expend4bles trailer — and you’ll be pleased to note that things have only got more intensely explode-y since we last hung out with Hollywood’s hardest legends nearly a decade ago.
“I got this situation where I need your help,” says Stallone’s Expendables head honcho Barney Ross when he knocks on for Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas. Yep, the old gang are getting back together for one more mission: Ross, Lee and their squad of experienced exterminators are on the tail of some nukes which have gone walkabout and ended up in the hands of terrorists who want to razz up some bad vibes between America and Russia. “If these babies go off,” we’re told, “it’ll be World War Three.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse isn’t the only movie bringing punk rock vibes to theaters this year. Lionsgate debuted a new poster for Expend4bles, the fourth chapter of the Expendables franchise that makes you want to throw up your horns and bang your head. As a fire burns inside the skull, guns and knives protrude from almost every angle, as if Ghost Rider became an NRA poster boy. Included are the names of various cast members, from Stallone to Statham, Jaa, Uwais, Fox, and more!

Action icon Sylvester Stallone is making his television debut with the Paramount+ series Tulsa King. In this new series, Stallone will play a mobster who gets assigned to a small town in Tulsa. This will be a change of pace for the actor to star in an episodic streaming show. Here’s a sentence you probably didn’t have on your streaming wars bingo card a few years ago: Sylvester Stallone is heading to Tulsa.
The “Rocky” star is taking on his first major television role in “Tulsa King,” a new Paramount+ series from creator Taylor Sheridan. The mafia drama stars Stallone as a longtime gangster who finds himself forced to relocate to Oklahoma to establish a new racketeering and gambling operation for his former family (as if Lincoln Riley didn’t leave the state with enough problems to deal with). Once he gets there, he finds himself making a big splash in the otherwise-sleepy criminal underbelly of the Sooner State’s second largest city as only Sylvester Stallone can.
According to the show’s official synopsis, “Tulsa King” follows “New York mafia capo Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi (Stallone) just after he is released from prison after 25 years and unceremoniously...

Sylvester Stallone has confirmed that he is “moving on” from The Expendables after 12 years with the Lionsgate action film franchise.
He made the announcement last week in a video published to Instagram, which saw him walking around the set of Expendables 4 on his final day of shooting.
Stallone called the decision to exit the series he helped launch “bittersweet,” though he said that he is “ready to pass the baton on” to co-star Jason Statham “and his capable hands.”
The three-time Oscar nominee later reflected on the “heart, energy and humor” he’s looked to bring all of his projects including those in the Expendables franchise. “The greatest thing is being able to provide films [and] entertainment [where] maybe there’s a little message in there, because what I try to convey in my successful films is the human touch,” Stallone said. “Not so much the action; the action is self-evident.

Action icon Sylvester Stallone is in the midst of a huge 12 months, and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

From ‘Evil Dead’ to ‘John Wick,’ Lionsgate Looks To Tap Rich Library with Mobile Shooter (Exclusive)
Mobile shooter “Deploy and Destroy” received a major update today enabling tournament play for the game and giving players a sense of just how big Lionsgate thinks the franchise-mashing game could become.
The update’s new competitive mode disables auto-aim and bot in the game and makes all weapons available to the characters playable in the tournament. The first tournament will focus on the “Ash vs. Evil Dead” IP, though the game also currently includes characters from The “Divergent” series.
While the game currently only has characters from two Lionsgate properties, the plan is to dive into the entertainment companies massive library of hit titles like “John Wick” and “Saw,” Peter Levin, president of interactive ventures, games and digital strategies at Lionsgate, told Variety.
“We spend a lot of time meeting with talented developers from all over the world who are passionate about our movies and TV shows,” Levin said.

You know I love me some “Expendables” news. Here’s the latest: writer/director Sylvester Stallone on the set of the movie doing some stunt work. The team consists of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Bao (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), and Emanuel (Mickey Rourke). Testosterone fueled mayhem comes to your multiplexes in 2010. And yes, you should be disturbed that at 90 years old, Stallone is in better shape than you. More “Expendables” set pics over at SpoilerTV.

By now you may have already heard the news that Arnold Schwarzenegger will return to the big screen in a cameo role as himself in Sylvester Stallone's veteran-heavy action flick The Expendables. AICN broke the news last night, saying Arnie will play Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger -- that he'll be shooting for one day, and the Governor will have ties to Stallone's character, Barney Ross. Additionally, Latino Review adds that Danny Trejo has joined the flick, while AICN notes that Eric Roberts has replaced Ben Kingsley in a cast that already includes Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Sandra Bullock, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Forest Whitaker. And I'm sorry, but if that retro badass cast can't churn out a fun flick, then I've lost all hope in humanity.
With the news out of the way, let's turn to the topic at hand. Obviously Arnold is itching to get back in front...

Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action movie The Expendables is now two steps closer to perfection. Last week I posted about Jean-Claude Van Damme's choice to turn down a role in the movie, and mentioned that at this point the only old school action stars missing from the cast were Steven Seagal and Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. Well, guess who just signed on for a role in the film? That's right, The Governator baby! According to Ain't It Cool News, Schwarzenegger will indeed be involved in the film. But how is this possible with him still in office? Well, it seems that he will be appearing as Governor Schwarzenegger in the film, who has some history with Stallone's character Barney Ross. I guess it's ...

This is a rumor alert, so take this with a grain of salt for now.
The folks over at Ain't It Cool News just reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger may deliver a cameo in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action film "The Expendables."
Here's what AICN has to say: "Just got off the phone with... ahem "my source" ahem... who let me know that Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to be playing Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Expendables.
He will be shooting for one day, and it seems that the Gov and Sly's character Barney Ross have some history back when the Gov was shooting Conan The Barbarian!"
Well, it's unconfirmed for now, but it sure sounds cool. In related news/rumors, AICN also said Ben Kingsley will not be appearing in the film. Eric Roberts will replace him, apparently.

AICN is reporting that Arnold Schwarzenegger will take one day away from his job to join the cast of Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables." While the site is not revealing their source, this looks to be coming directly from Stallone. "Arnold Schwarzenegger is going to be playing Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 'The Expendables'," the source said. "He will be shooting for one day, and it seems that the Governor and Sly's character Barney Ross have some history back when the Governor was shooting 'Conan the Barbarian.'" The site added that Ben Kingsley has dropped out and will be replaced by Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight). Also, Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) has now officially signed on. Production is currently one month away from starting and Stallone feels comfortable that he has been able to get the right balance of humor, action and emotional reality in the script.
