It’s no secret that Zoe Saldana usually wears black dresses, and I couldn’t blame her—black is a classic and versatile color that can effortlessly create a stylish and sophisticated appearance.
After showcasing a series of black ensembles during the promotion of “The Absence of Eden” last month, Zoe Saldana made a striking return to the red carpet. Remarkably, she appeared in two identical black dresses at events only a few days apart.

The lineup for the 77th Cannes Film Festival has officially been unveiled. As of right now, 19 films will be competing for the prestigious top prize, the Palme d’Or. The festival will be running from May 14 through the closing ceremony on May 25 in the small town on the French Riviera. This year’s jury will be led by Greta Gerwig, fresh off of her success writing and directing “Barbie,” which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The remaining members of the jury have yet to be announced.
Having an idea of a filmmaker’s history at the festival can sometimes help give us an insight as to who could be in the best position to take home the Palme. For example, two of this year’s entries come from filmmakers who have previously claimed the Palme. Another five are from directors who have won prizes in official...

When Guardians of the Galaxy was first announced back in 2014, many were assured this was going to be MCU’s first bomb, as the IP didn’t actually have a dedicated fanbase. On top of that, apart from Zoë Saldana, who was somewhat of a star, no one in the Guardians cast was an A-lister at the time, but as the story goes, James Gunn made it work.
Fast forward to today, the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy stands as one of the best superhero trilogies, whose final entry was lauded as the MCU’s best since Infinity War. And much like the film itself, which was one of the most emotionally heavy movies the cinematic giant had to offer, the last day on set brought Gunn to tears following Chris Pratt and Zoë Saldana’s speeches.

The Breakthrough Prize Ceremony, also known as “the Oscars of Science,” is an awards show unlike any other.
Founded and funded by Silicon Valley titan Yuri Milner and his artist wife Julia Milner, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, 23andMe co-founder Anne Wojcicki, and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative co-founder Priscilla Chan, the Breakthrough Prize recognizes “scientists changing the world” with award statuettes and sizable cash prizes. And on Saturday night, at the ceremony’s 10th edition — the second in a row held on the roof of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, with the Hollywood Hills glistening in the background — presenters, performers and audience members included a collection of A-listers that could give the Oscars a run for their money.
One could turn left and spot Bill Gates and Robert Downey Jr. sitting at the same table, or right and find tablemates Bradley Cooper and Rupert Murdoch schmoozing.

Dan Stevens’ Legion was one show that was liked by fans in many ways. However, its end was one they weren’t so ready for. Deadpool 3 is turning out to be an action-packed multiversal flick that fans have nothing but anticipation for.
With Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman not being the only returning actors, there is an uproar among fans to incorporate the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the smoothest way possible.

There are many reunions taking place in the film, including the one staring at us right in the face. None of them, however, compared to the possibility of a reunion of the Xavier family. If Italian artist Marco Perego-Saldaña’s transition to film comes as a surprise, it is only to those outside his own household. “I always wanted to make a film. I’m a little obsessed. I watch one film Monday to Friday,” he says. “Sunday, actually,” corrects his wife Zoe Saldaña, with a laugh.
With the intensely dark drama The Absence of Eden starring Saldaña and Garrett Hedlund as individuals on each side of the U.S. border crisis, Perego-Saldana has put decades of artistry and independent study to use, creating a film that juxtaposes beauty with brutality. “The idea was to approach it from a sculpture perspective,” he says. “There are so many mysteries inside the picture to discover, if people pay attention.”
Deadline: Why was this a subject matter that you wanted to explore with your first feature film?

Sasquatch Sunset directors Nathan and David Zellner always wondered what these hairy giants do when they’re not walking – the only Bigfoot footage available has been a minute of a supposed Sasquatch wandering in the northern California woods. They decided to flesh that out in unique dialogue-free comedic imagining of the creatures’ daily life – eating, fighting, etc. Stars Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough, Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner are unrecognizable as the hairy tribe of four that entranced Sundance (see Deadline review). Bleecker Street is opening the film, written by David Zellner, executive produced by Ari Aster, in 9 theaters in New York, LA, San Francisco and Austin, ahead of a big jump to about 800 screens next week.

Two parallel but inevitably intersecting stories make up Italian-born director Marco Perego’s debut feature “The Absence of Eden,” a strikingly shot and superbly acted immigration drama. But for all its commendable on-screen elements, it’s the screenplay that Perego co-wrote with Rick Rapoza that falls short, traversing overly familiar and rather sordid tropes related to a divisive political issue. While the actors — led by Zoe Saldaña, who is also married to the director — give powerful portrayals that challenge the country’s anti-immigrant climate, but there’s little in the way of thematic novelty here.
New Ice Agent Shipp (Garrett Hedlund), whose estranged father often leaves voice messages he never hears, has just moved to an unnamed border town. Though Shipp’s decision to join this line of work doesn’t stem from a strong ideological stance, his partner and friend Dobbins (Chris Coy) tries to instill in him a dehumanizing “us against them” mentality.

Former Venice Film Festival head Marco Müller has been named Artistic Director of Italy’s Taormina Film Fest.
The announcement was made today by the special commissioner of the Taormina Arte Sicilia Foundation/ Fondazione Taormina Arte Sicilia, Sergio Bonomo, who said: “Maestro Müller’s professional contribution will be a driving force of success for the prestigious film event”.
The festival’s 70th edition runs this year from July 12 to 19.
“I am happy to work in Sicily to rediscover my roots – I was born and raised in Rome, but my only quarter of Italian blood is from Palermo,” Müller said.

Reviews will have to wait till the Cannes Film Festival kicks off on May 14, but it’s not too early for a critic to weigh in on this year’s lineup — or how it looks on paper, at least, and what the selection might say about the state of things.
At the top of the press conference, festival director Thierry Frémaux noted that last year would be a tough edition to top. The two big winners of the 2023 competition, “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Zone of Interest,” went on to score Oscar best picture nominations, alongside Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The festival made strides toward gender parity, with nearly a third of the films in competition directed by women. And to complicate matters, Hollywood has since been hit by two production-stopping guild strikes, delaying films the studios might have sent to Cannes.

Immigration has often been a topic that sparks strong emotions around the globe, and it is an especially hot topic this election season, particularly when you have a U.S. presidential candidate characterizing undocumented immigrants not as “human” but rather as “animals” and using phrases such as “they are poisoning the blood of our country” at campaign rallies. Now seems to be a perfect time for a powerful new film, The Absence of Eden, to perhaps help lower the temperature and show the human side of those trying to cross the border into a new and hopefully better life.
None other than Martin Scorsese has lent his name to this film by signing on as an executive producer, and it represents the first feature for artist and producer Marco Perego who also happens to be the husband of the film’s star Zoe Saldaña. Perego says it was all inspired...

Fine performances and powerful visuals only partially compensate for the inevitable air of familiarity that accompanies Marco Perego’s debut feature. Although the filmmaker provides his real-life spouse Zoe Saldaña with one of her best roles in a long while — it’s nice to see her get a respite from the numerous sci-fi and fantasy blockbuster franchises (Star Trek, Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy) to which she’s attached, not to mention free of alien make-up — The Absence of Eden spins a by-now sadly familiar story of the human suffering engendered by the border crisis.

Paris, April 11 (Ians) Even as the Indian media celebrates the inclusion of Payal Kapadia’s first feature film in the competition section of the Cannes Film Festival, world cinema’s most prestigious event this year will bring together several iconic filmmakers, reports ‘Variety’.
The roster includes notable names such as Francis Ford Coppola with ‘Megalopolis’ starring Adam Driver, George Miller with ‘Furiosa’ featuring Anya Taylor-Joy, and ‘Star Wars’ creator George Lucas, who will be feted with an honorary Palme d’Or.
Kevin Costner will also be on hand with the first installment of his Western epic, ‘Horizon, An American Saga’.
Some of the high-profile films in the pipeline for this year’s competition, according to ‘Variety’, include ‘Poor Things’ helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Kinds of Kindness’, a stylised three-part story set in the present that reunites the Greek director with Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe; Paul Schrader’s ‘Oh Canada’ with Richard Gere,...

Following the press conference unveiling the Cannes lineup, festival director Thierry Fremaux addressed a few hot topics, including Francis Ford Coppola’s 135-minute epic “Megalopolis,” which doesn’t yet have a distribution deal.
While “Megalopolis,” Coppola’s self-produced $120 million opus starring Adam Driver, has been selected to compete at the Cannes Film Festival, it doesn’t have a distribution deal in France. In theory, that’s not an issue as there are “quite a lot of films in the official section without any distribution,” as Fremaux tells Variety. But in the case of “Megalopolis,” it may be a ticking bomb.
If “Megalopolis” does get sold to a streamer with no theatrical plans for France, it will spark uproar on the Croisette and within local exhibitors. Most importantly, it will clash with Cannes’ infamous rule which requires every film in competition to have French theatrical distribution. That strict guideline was first...

The first-look image of Sebastian Stan as a young, pre-tv star and pre-president Donald Trump in buzzy upcoming biopic “The Apprentice” has been revealed.
Ali Abbasi’s feature — which has just been announced as part of the 2024 Cannes main competition — charts Trump’s ascent to power through what is described as a “Faustian deal” with the influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn (seen in the still being portrayed by Jeremy Strong). As the synopsis reads, “‘The Apprentice’ is a dive into the underbelly of the American empire.”
The hot button film, written by Gabe Sherman and likely to cause a stir on both sides of the political fence, also stars Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump and Martin Donovan as Fred Trump Sr.
Producers include Daniel Bekerman for Scythia Films (Canada), Jacob Jarek for Profile Pictures (Denmark), Ruth Treacy and Julianne Forde for Tailored Films (Ireland), Abbasi and Louis Tisne...

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will kick off with Quentin Dupieux’s “The Second Act,” a star-studded surreal French comedy headlined by Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel and Raphaël Quenard, Variety has learned.
The anticipated movie is produced by Hugo Selignac at Chi-Fou-Mi, a Mediawan company, and is represented in international markets by Kinology. The film will play out of competition on May 14 and will be released on the same day in French theaters.
Laced with absurdist humor, the meta movie follows actors starring in a doomed film production. Dupieux is one of France’s most popular and prolific filmmakers. He delivered two films in 2023: “Daaaaaalí,” which played out-of-competition at Venice, and “Yannick,” a French box office hit that sold around the world.

According to new McKinsey & Company research, there are over 62 million Latinos living in the United States who not only account for more than $3 trillion of Gdp but are also avid consumers of film and TV. US Latinos account for 24 percent of box office ticket sales and 24 percent of streaming subscribers. Yet somehow, there still aren't enough Latines behind and in front of the camera even though our viewership doubles when we see ourselves represented on or off screen.
Today, we still don't have enough TV programming that accurately represents us - and the few shows that have been created for us and by us, like "Vida," "One Day at a Time," "Promised Land," and "Gentefied," were eventually all canceled despite their popularity. Among these many cancellations was Dominican American creator Claudia Forestieri's beloved "Gordita Chronicles," which was released in June 2022 on HBO Max and was canceled after just one season.

2023 was a rough year for Disney, with almost all of their films and shows losing at the box office or on streaming. The only real highlight was the third entry in the popular Guardians of the Galaxy series at Marvel. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 made $845.6 Million worldwide against a budget of $250 Million. The film marked the last time director James Gunn helmed a Marvel project, and the last time the original cast would all be together on screen.
Since then, not only has James Gunn departed for Warner Bros. to head up their DC Universe of films, both Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer) and Zoe Saldaña (Gamora) have expressed their desire to leave the series, leaving behind only Star Lord, Rocket and Groot from the original team.

Marvel may be going through a rough patch lately, but the big film brand still had a few successes in the last year. One of those was the completion of James Gunn‘s trilogy of Space A-holes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The Guardians were a big part of the MCU’s second phase. It was considered a big risk for the company since they were not a popular name and deemed too unconventional when compared to the other superhero films. Nevertheless, the first movie raised $773.3 million at the box office and made stars of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and James Gunn. Fast forward to phase five, Gunn has the Guardians go their separate ways, then proceeds to take his new position as the co-chief of the Dcu.

Zoë Saldaña’s affinity for intergalactic sci-fi adventures is well documented through her filmography. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 heralding James Gunn’s swansong for Marvel before becoming DC head, Saldaña’s association with the franchise was officially over by the actor’s own admission. The Avatar star though, believed that Marvel would be making a huge mistake if the beloved film series isn’t taken forward for future films. With a new team having been introduced at the end of the 3rd film, fans are now debating the path this narrative could take.

The third installment of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ hit theaters on May 5th, 2023, marking a significant success for the studio following the disappointing reception of ‘Quantumania’. Gunn initially proposed ideas for this final film in November 2014, later confirming his return as writer and director in April 2017.
However, Disney dismissed him from the project in July 2018 due to controversial Twitter posts, only to reinstate him by October of the same year. His comeback was announced publicly in March 2019, and production resumed once he completed his work on DC’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ and ‘Peacemaker’ series. Despite the movie’s success, Gunn had no plans to remain in the MCU, as he had already been appointed co-chairman and co-ceo of DC Studios, gearing up to lead a new and revamped DC Universe, replacing the existing Dceu.
