“The Empire” just world premiered in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won the Silver Bear Jury Prize. The movie marks Dumont’s follow up to “France,” a dark comedy starring Léa Seydoux which competed at the Cannes Film Festival.
Kino Lorber is planning a theatrical release later this year, followed by a home video, educational and digital release on all major platforms. The acquisition of “The Empire” marks the sixth time that Kino Lorber has collaborated with Dumont, with previous releases including “Li’l Quinquin,” “Coincoin and the Extra-Humans,” “Slack Bay,” “Camille Claudel 1915” and, most recently, “France.”

Films Boutique will handle international sales on Filipino master Lav Díaz’s “Essential Truths of The Lake,” one of the highest-profile titles in the just announced main International Competition at this year’s Locarno Festival.
The Berlin and Lyon-based production-sales company’s fifth collaboration with Diaz following, among others, Venice Golden Bear Winner “The Woman Who Left” and Berlin Silver Bear Winner “Lullaby To A Sorrowful Mystery,” “Essential Truths of The Lake” marks a prequel to Diaz’s ‘When The Waves Are Gone’ that premiered out of competition at Venice last year.
It reprises the character of the ethically conflicted police lieutenant Hermes Papauran, one of the best investigators of the Philippines. When asked what drives a man to search for the truth, Papauran says dejectedly that maybe he just wants to keep inflicting pain on himself.
Faced with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody murders and brazen lies, he...

Albert Serra plunges into the ghostly depths of paradise with “Pacifiction.”
Deemed the best film of the year by Cahiers du Cinema, “Pacifiction” stars Benoît Magimel (“The Piano Teacher”) as a French government official who investigates the sighting of a submarine that indicates the return of nuclear testing on Tahiti.
In “Pacifiction,” on the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, the High Commissioner of the Republic and French government official De Roller (Magimel) is a calculating man with flawless manners. His somewhat broad perception of his role brings him to navigate the high-end “establishment” as well as shady venues where he mingles with the locals. Especially since a persistent rumor has been going around: the sighting of a submarine whose ghostly presence could herald the return of French nuclear testing.
Marc Susini, Alexandre Melo, Pahoa Mahagafanau, Matahi Pambrun, Sergi López, and Montse Triola also star in the film from writer-director Serra.

The origins of "Harvard at the Gulbenkian - Dialogues About Portuguese Film and World Cinema" lie in a series of influential programs and events organized by the Harvard Film Archive that together introduced Us audiences to the incredible richness of Portuguese cinema. Of special importance among these was "The School of Reis," a 2012 Harvard Film Archive program which explored the legacy of the late António Reis by grouping major works by Reis' students and collaborators together with the pioneering films that he directed, both alone and together with Margarida Cordeiro. "The School of Reis" was critically acclaimed not only in the Us, but also in Portugal where it was appreciated as an alternate way of historicizing the radical approaches to narrative cinema embraced by so many of the greatest Portuguese filmmakers.

Mubi is proud to present work produced for Harvard at the Gulbenkian, a collaboration between the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Harvard Film Archive. Curated by Haden Guest and Joaquim Sapinho, and produced by Pedro Fernandes Duarte, Harvard at the Gulbenkian organizes a series of dialogues about Portuguese film and world cinema. The series consists of 12 weekends, between November 2013 and July 2014, in which a Portuguese filmmaker and one, two or three international filmmakers, and one or more important film critics or scholars of many nationalities are brought together for a series of screenings and public discussions. We will be hosting the articles and video conversations produced for the series, and this index will be updated as events take place in Lisbon.

The inaugural weekend of the Harvard-Gulbenkian collaboration makes clear the central ambition and idea of our program: a radical rethinking and recontextualization of Portuguese cinema within the broader realm of world cinema. Against the still lingering critique of Portuguese cinema as marginal, artisan and willfully eccentric, we offer a contrary vision of a restless cinema engaged in a dynamic and expansive dialogue with the most innovative and important trends in world cinema. At the core of the Harvard-Gulbenkian program are a select group of Portuguese artists who have together defined a cinema of ideas through visionary films distinguished by their philosophical depth, poetic form and radical reinvention of cinematic traditions. These adventurous films, these daring gambits, are not the products of insular national tradition, but are instead the evidence of a profound connection with the most important transnational currents in world cinema today.

Alright now here is the program everyone should be keeping a close eye on. Yorgos Lanthimos, Bertrand Bonello, Shinya Tsukamoto and Toshiaki Toyoda all have films lined up for the Toronto International Film Festival this year. We also recently posted the complete line-up for the gala, special presentations and the World Cinema programs as well. Here is the press release:

Rebecca Hall in The Awakening I may sound like a spoiled brat when I say this, but the fact neither Carnage or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy were part of this morning's Toronto Film Festival announcement sort of bums me out. However, there are other films that were added that do make my ears perk up, none more so than the addition of Whit Stillman's Damsels in Distress as well as a couple of films I didn't expect and some I had never heard of.
To begin, the closing night film which I guess will serves as something of a Tinker, Tailor replacement, David Hare's (screenwriter of The Hours and The Reader) Page Eight starring Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz, Michael Gambon, Ralph Fiennes and Judy Davis. The film tells the story of Johnny Worricker (Nighy), an MI5 agent who has learned to keep his observational skills perpetually operational. However,...
