Roger Daltrey wrapped up his 24-year stint as the curator of the Teenage Cancer Trust Sunday night with a grand ‘Ovation’ concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The bill featured longtime Teenage Cancer Trust supporters Eddie Vedder, Robert Plant, Paul Weller, and Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics. The Who played two Teenage Cancer Trust shows earlier in the week, and Pete Townshend was originally on the bill for the ‘Ovation’ event, but he had to travel to New York for the opening of the new Tommy on Broadway.

John Lennon didn’t think he was the most thoughtful musical producer in the world, but he called out Ringo Starr’s producer for being “too painstaking.” That’s quite the take, considering the producer in question gave us some of Ringo’s best albums. He was also behind popular tunes from Carly Simon and Harry Nilsson.
John Lennon slammed Ringo Starr’s producer, Richard Perry
During a 1975 interview with Rolling Stone, John said rumors that he took a long time to complete The Beatles’ songs were false. “I don’t want to make myself so painstaking that it’s boring,” he said. “But I should (pause) maybe t’ink a little more. Maybe.
“But on the other hand I think my criticism of somebody like Richard Perry would be that he’s great but he’s too painstaking,” he said. “It gets too slick and somewhere in between that...

Taylor Swift stopped by the BBC’s Live Lounge late last month to perform songs from her new LP Lover, but midway through the set she broke out a huge surprise by tackling Leo Sayer’s 1978 classic “I Can’t Stop Loving You (Though I Try).”
“For this cover song I wanted to choose a song that I felt really expressed an interesting, beautiful, exquisite type of love,” she said. “I love this song so much. I remember driving around Nashville when I first had my driver’s license just...

Taylor Swift is a fan of all love songs, but particularly Phil Collins’ classic tune “Can’t Stop Loving You.” During an appearance at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, Swift offered her intimate version of the emotional song, calling it “literally the most sad, beautiful song ever.”

Ed Sheeran's third studio album release is causing quite the stir for Harry Potter alum Rupert Grint since fans can't tell the two apart. During an appearance on The Late Late Show Monday, the child star told James Corden about how he's typically confused for the red-headed Grammy winner. "It's kind of 50/50 now," he joked. "Someone stops me—it could go either way. I could be Ed or I could be me." However, according to the British actor, it's not only everyday people that make the confusion. "Leo Sayer—he came up to me and said he loved my music, of course thinking I was Ed," Grint recalled. "I play...

However, when he does get stopped by a fan, it’s not always a fan of his! In fact, he regularly gets mistaken for singer Ed Sheeran.

The Guard and Calvary writer-director John Michael McDonagh seems to have set himself a creative challenge with his first Us feature, War On Everyone. How do you make two borderline sociopathic renegade cops in any way likeable by the end of the movie? In McDonagh’s favour, he’s cast an effortlessly charismatic actor in one of the leads: Michael Peña, who plays bad cop number one Bob Bolaño.
Standing alongside him, hunched over into an uncomfortable looking position to better fit into the frame, is the chiselled Alexander Skarsgard as Terry, a wild-eyed, hard-drinking bruiser who specialises in knocking bad guys out with one punch. War On Everyone opens with Bob and Terry careening along in the latter’s classic muscle car in hot pursuit of a perp who happens to be a mime artist. This allows Bob to deliver the...

Holly birthday, Happyoaks! Sorry, let's try that again. Happy birthday, Hollyoaks! That's better.
It's often written off as the runt of the soap litter, but we're rather affectionate towards Hollyoaks. Surprisingly, it's not only survived but is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this autumn. It now boasts 50 regulars and a faster pace than any other soap, but can you believe that Hollyoaks once focused on the adventures of only seven main characters?
Launching on Channel 4 in October 1995 with just one episode per week, Hollyoaks gradually earned a place in viewers' hearts as it followed the tangled lives and torrid loves of Kurt, Jambo, Louise, Maddie, Natasha, Dawn and Tony. So where are Chester's magnificent seven now?

"But I'm a massive fan of UK culture, it's true, and I've watched every season of Celebrity Big Brother.

Alexander O'Neal has revealed his reasoning for quitting Celebrity Big Brother following his dramatic departure over the weekend.
The singer became embroiled in two unpleasant confrontations with showbiz blogger Perez Hilton, which resulted in a formal warning from Big Brother over O'Neal's use of an offensive term.
Speaking to CBB host Emma Willis on Celebrity Big Brother's Bit On The Side, Alexander revealed why he walked, saying: "I did it for myself and for my housemates."
He added that "the stress became unbearable" prior to his exit, and was subsequently forced to accept that the 'Perez problem' was not going to go away.
But Alexander is not the only disgruntled celebrity housemate to voluntarily leave, and we doubt he'll be the last.
Some, like Claire King, withdrew from the show due to illness, while others have been removed by producers.
But can you remember some of the former CBB stars...

Pop nostalgia is an odd thing. It’s the connective tissue between the new movie Jersey Boys and this week’s Doc Option, the tremendously obscure 1976 film All This and World War II. Jersey Boys is based on the hit 2005 Broadway play of the same name, a dramatization of the rise and fall of The Four Seasons. All This and World War II features the music of The Beatles, the act that dethroned The Four Seasons from their perch at the top of musical popularity in the mid-’60s. But the doc also incorporates The Four Seasons and its perpetual frontman Frankie Valli into its mix. If you’re wondering what kind of a production would concoct such a situation, well, the answer is stranger than anything you’re probably expecting. All This and World War II is an 88-minute recap of World War II, consisting of newsreel footage and clips from movies and propaganda films of...

Faye Dunaway in ‘Mommie Dearest’ — Joan Crawford portrayal ‘Greatest Bad Performance’? Why are those movies not only Bad Movies, but also Great Bad Movies? I need to begin my answer by insisting that my new book is strictly about opinion. To mark the release of Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Rob takes us through the high points of Alan Partridge's TV career...
Certain TV shows are watched so excessively that quoting them in general conversation has just became part of the norm. The Office, The Simpsons and Spaced are three such, but none have been stolen from with quite as much regularity as Norfolk’s favourite son, Alan Partridge. For better or for worse, Partridgisms have cemented their place in our everyday vernacular. The likes of, “cos I’m a bloody bloke”, “see the match?” and “scum, sub-human scum” are just a few of the phrases that AP (with a little help from his writers) has gifted to the world over the years.
He may be a socially awkward, insensitive, selfish, narcissist obsessed with his own celebrity status, but despite all this, it’s hard to not love Alan.

Christmas TV is pretty much a dead cert year in year out. Right from way back in the 70s when I was a kid (and being spooked by that revolving melted Santa head globe on BBC1 in 1978), the same old types of Christmas programme crop up. Whether they're festive versions of well-established comedies, horrible screechy carol services or doomy Bah Humbug soap shenanigans, Christmas TV always runs along tried and tested lines.
And then there's the films. There's usually a select pool of about four or five films that make an annual appearance around Christmas. The Sound Of Music, quite possibly my least favourite film ever – a never-ending shrill parade of twee noise; Mary Poppins – a similarly joyless experience of naff songs and Fearne Cotton-esque gorbloymey accents; Annie – more out of tune histrionics starring a nine-year-old Leo Sayer with a bad case of orange hair dye; oh, and The Poseidon Adventure,...

Mention Underworld to any Doctor Who expert, and they’ll most likely respond with a barely disguised sneer of contempt. For years, the story has been derided for ridiculous looking Cso caves to the point where it looks less like a Doctor Who story, more an episode of kids’ virtual reality TV show, Knightmare.
Ironically though, the Cso isn’t the worst thing about Underworld. The recent DVD sheds a bit more light on this troubled production. Back in 1977, funds weren’t quite so high as they had been on previous stories, and so it was decided that a good way of saving money was to build model caves and film these via Cso. Sadly though, the Cso doesn’t totally convince, and according to the DVD featurette, this wasn’t a particularly easy production to work on. The grainy black and white footage shows Big Tom alternating between a...

Chris Rock is a highly entertaining anchor man for this engaging documentary about African-Americans and the hair industry
Perhaps the most pleasant surprise of the week is this wildly entertaining documentary fronted by comedian Chris Rock, an exploration of African-American identity through the medium of hair.
Rock marvels open-mouthed at the excesses of the (mostly white-owned) $9bn black hair industry, visiting barbershops, Atlanta hair shows, salons and celebrities. At a factory, he stirs a huge vat of hair relaxer, which takes the curl out of afro hair, asking how much the chemical goo is worth. "So, this would last Prince about a month?" he laughs.
For America's black women, he discovers, relaxer is "creamy crack", an addictive chemical habit which practically burns out their very identity as African-Americans. "Good hair," he learns, "is straight hair." Oddly, this straightening is referred to as a "perm". When I was growing up, the son of a hairdresser,...

Sylvia Anderson is well known as the pioneering producer who co-created many iconic sci-fi shows of the 60s and 70s.
These included the marionette puppet programmes Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet & The Mysterons and Joe 90 and the live-action series UFO, The Protectors and Space:1999.
Sylvia, now 72, provided the voices for many of the characters, notably Thunderbirds super-agent Lady Penelope who was driven around in her six-wheeled, hi-tech, pink Rolls-Royce (registration FAB1) by a chauffeur called Parker.
Sylvia has now teamed up with composer and record producer David Courtney on a live show called My Fab Years to promote her new biography of the same name.
David Courtney will host the shows and talk to Sylvia about her life, aided by unique archive film footage of many of the classic TV shows she helped to create.
Courtney has worked with some of the music industry's legends such as Roger Daltrey, Sir Paul McCartney,...

New York — "The City" star Whitney Port showed her spring 2010 Whitney Eve collection at New York fashion week on Thursday (September 10), and some of Bryant Park's most familiar faces packed the tent to check out her latest designs.
Port showed alongside Nicholas K and Mara Hoffman for a group presentation of their spring lines. Not to spoil anything, but there might have been a "City" co-star or two in the house. The show was on a fashionably late schedule, starting nearly 40 minutes late. After the Nicholas K collection, Port's designs made their debut.
Whitney Eve mixes silver and gold metallics, airy fabrics and draping and details like slits, ruffles and cutouts for a girly, put-together look. Several...

There are a few subjects in life that, when brought up in conversation, can tear a group of people apart; friends can become enemies and besties can become worsties in an instant. Some hot-button topics to avoid: Politics, the extended catalog of Leo Sayer and Pov horror. I live for drama, but this column is not the place for politics, and I've been down the Leo Sayer road more...
Leo Sayer has become an Australian citizen in a ceremony attended by the country's Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. The British musician was one of 60 people to be made official residents during the event on Australia Day. Sayer told ABC News that he first visited the country more than three decades ago and has now decided to make it his permanent home. "I think a lot of people know I love this country and always have (more)...

LONDON -- Season 3 of "Desperate Housewives" opened Wednesday on Channel 4 as 3.6 million viewers tuned in at 9:30 p.m. for the first episode of a two-hour double bill. The second hour attracted 2.8 million viewers.
The audience was down slightly from the launch of Season 2, which opened last year with 3.9 million viewers.
"Housewives" is Channel 4's most expensive acquisition to date, reputed to have cost more than £1 million ($1.9 million) per episode. But it drew far fewer viewers than the 7.1 million who tuned in at 8 p.m. to watch the 90-minute launch of Channel 4 seasonal staple "Celebrity Big Brother".
"Brother", which this year features Jermaine Jackson and former "A Team" star Dirk Benedict, also includes film director Ken Russell and '70s singer Leo Sayer.
