Elvis Presley might have been accused of cultural appropriation more than any other singer. A famous singer from the 1960s didn’t seem to take issue with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll taking inspiration from Black music. Of course, her perspective is not universal.
A member of a Black girl group didn’t feel Elvis Presley committed cultural appropriation
Darlene Love was a member of the Black girl group The Blossoms, which worked with Phil Spector. The Blossoms released classic tunes such as “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” and “He’s a Rebel,” both of which were incorrectly attributed to The Crystals. As a solo singer, Love became most known for a pair of Christmas recordings: the seasonal favorite “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and the Home Alone 2 soundtrack single “All Alone on Christmas.”
During a 2018 interview with The Village Voice, Love was asked if Elvis appropriated music.

Bobby Caldwell, the soulful singer-songwriter who scored a top 10 hit with “What You Won’t Do for Love” and wrote “The Next Time I Fall,” a No. 1 hit for Amy Grant and Peter Cetera, died today at his home in New York City after a long illness. He was 71.
His wife, Mary Caldwell, announced the news on social media, saying: “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years.” She added that his health had deteriorated for more than six years since suffering an allergic reaction to an antibiotic.
Bornon August 15, 1951, in Manhattan and raised in Miami, Caldwell’s parents were singers who hosted a musical/variety TV Show called Suppertime. He was a multi-instrumentalist whose teenage band gigged in Las Vegas before he relocated to Los Angeles, where he became a...

Joan Armatrading has always been a pioneer — but the world is finally catching up to her. She made her name in the early 1970s — a Black woman with a rock guitar, at a time when the radio couldn’t imagine such a thing. Over the past 50 years, she’s built her hardcore cult following by always going her own way, a fiercely independent voice who never sounds like anyone else. And with a whole new generation of female singer-songwriters rising up, from pop to indie rock, it makes sense that...

Shortly after the release of her 1971 self-titled debut, Carly Simon received an unexpected opportunity: a five-night stint opening for Cat Stevens at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.
The singer-songwriter was hesitant for several reasons, including the fact that she had never performed solo or been to Los Angeles and had an extreme fear of flying. The shows were also three weeks away, and she needed to hire a band. She managed to secure drummer Russ Kunkel, who had suddenly become available after James Taylor suffered a motorcycle accident and delayed his tour.

Five decades later, she can still remember the high points, like meeting a few Beatles, encountering Mick Jagger or a very young Michael Jackson in the studio, or sharing a bill with Tina Turner. And she can also recall the precise moment when she decided to shut it all down, at least for a long while.

Mickey Guyton, Travis Denning, and Dustin Lynch are among the artists performing as part of the upcoming Farm Rescue benefit concert in Nashville. The virtual event, held in partnership between Farm Rescue and John Deere, takes place December 9th at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville with proceeds benefiting farmers affected by Covid-19.
“Covid highlights the vulnerability of family farms — when something unpredicted happens, not only is the family carrying that health burden, but also the pressure to produce, and the stresses of maintaining a viable operation,” says Bill Gross, President and Founder of Farm Rescue.

Electronic producer duo Disclosure dropped “Expressing What Matters” Wednesday, a groovy house number that samples one of blue-eyed soul’s most notable singles.
“This track samples the legendary song ‘Lowdown’ by Boz Scaggs,” Disclosure said in a statement. “We really wanted to try to focus in on those wonderful backing vocals that permeate through the original and give it such soul. They ended up becoming the focal point of the entire track. Bring chopped and skewed to their limit. The whole thing was one big audio science experiment for us.

Gary Catona isn’t your garden-variety vocal coach. The man who helped Renée Zellweger channel Judy Garland’s singing style calls himself a “voice builder,” adopting tenor Enrico Caruso’s model of strengthening the muscles that surround the vocal cords. The Philadelphia native’s clients have included Whitney Houston, Andrea Bocelli, Brian Wilson, Steven Tyler, Lenny Kravitz, Liza Minnelli and Shirley MacLaine. He also helped strengthen physically damaged vocal cords for the late Muhammad Ali, who suffered from Parkinson’s, and Jack Klugman, who died of throat cancer. Even Milli Vanilli’s Fab Morvan, famously ostracized by the music industry for lip-synching on the group’s debut album, came to Catona to learn how to sing.
For Zellweger, starring in “Judy” went beyond the complexities of portraying Garland in the last six months of her melodramatic life, a performance that has affirmed the actress’ place on the Oscar front-runner list.

It’s been a long while since a male solo artist has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And according to results from our recent poll, the one you most want for induction in 2020 is the late Warren Zevon. He narrowly defeated such rock heavyweights as George Michael, Phil Collins and Todd Rundgren in our poll.
Shockingly, no male solo artists were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the past two years. This astounding fact follows several years of voters catching up on such artists as Neil Diamond (2011), Donovan (2012), Peter Gabriel (2014), Randy Newman (2013), Lou Reed (2015), Steve Miller (2016), Cat Stevens (2014) and Bill Withers (2015).
We also recently offered very popular polls about which rock group you wanted next (won by The Doobie Brothers) and which female artist you would choose.

Fifty years ago, a handful of milestone albums set the tone for rock of the following decade. Crosby, Stills & Nash initiated a fresh approach to harmonies and looser group names; the eponymous debut by the Allman Brothers Band laid the foundation for the Southern rock of the Seventies. And setting the scene for the white soul-pop that would explode with the likes of Hall and Oates was Boz Scaggs’ self-titled album, which Atlantic Records rolled out on this day in August 1969.

It took a while for Boz Scaggs to really develop a sound of his own that people liked but for a while it seems as though he was having success while performing with others as it might have been that he hadn’t found his own rhythm just yet. The interesting thing about the era in which he was coming up in though is that so many musicians came and went that it was almost like a race to see who was going to last and who was going to fade off into the sunset, or crash and burn. Boz Scaggs takes nothing for granted, especially his voice. Each day before soundcheck on his just-wrapped tour, he put his vocal cords through their paces. Nothing sums up 2018 like the fact that Toto’s “Africa” has become our unofficial anthem. It’s a song that’s ridiculous by definition — an Eighties ode to Africa by a bunch of L.A. rock dudes who’d never set foot in the place. But something about this song speaks to our moment. It’s the new “Don’t Stop Believin’” — a mega-cheese classic of Eighties sentiment that’s gotten bizarrely popular in recent years, beloved by hipsters and moms and tone-deaf karaoke singers screaming “I bless the rains down in Africa!

Halt and Catch Fire, a show about technological innovation in the '80s, has been a throwback in the best possible way. A large part of that lies in its music selection, which not only re-creates the era, but allows the characters to inhabit wonderfully specific worlds — from Cameron writing code while listening to Austin-based punk band Big Boys to Gordon singing along to Boz Scaggs in his car. For the first season, AMC released Spotify playlists for each character, designed by music supervisor Thomas Golubić and his team at SuperMusicVision. “For us, it’s really a brainstorming exercise. We do it as a way of getting to know the character,” Golubić said. “It wasn’t necessarily all music that they would be playing, but it is music that really reflects their character.” They chose songs that the characters actually could have listened to, and went from there. The second...

Dr. Dre recently sat down with L.A. radio DJ Big Boy for a wide-ranging chat, discussing everything from his beginnings in N.W.A to producing Eminem. He spoke at length his involvement in the upcoming N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. "We want to show the heart of the guys and everything we went through...before the demise of the group," Dre said. Over the course of 16 info-packed minutes, Dre shared stories about recording Snoop Dogg in a jail cell and opened up about how he made...

Joe MacMillan has lots of secrets. Last week it was revealed that he disappeared after quitting Ibm and wasn’t seen for over a year. This week scars are revealed, literal scars all over his torso, which are uncovered after Gordon tears off his shirt in the middle of a fistfight. While this revelation primarily calls into question Gordon’s unorthodox fighting technique, it also prompts Joe to improvise a story about how, as a nine-year-old, he was mercilessly bullied for being way too excited about Sputnik and was pushed/fell off a roof. Which gave him these scars. And made him miss the greatest football game of all time.
This preposterous monologue comes at the end of another fast-paced, engaging, exposition heavy...

Tim & Eric's Tim Heidecker and that show’s composer, Davin Wood, first collaborated as Heidecker & Wood on Starting From Nowhere, an album inspired by 1970s rock songwriters like Warren Zevon, Harry Nilsson, and Boz Scaggs. Since then, Heidecker has released a parody jingle for a Herman Cain compilation, dropped by the home studio of Chicago’s The Earth Is A Man to record an impromptu cover of Bob Dylan’s “All The Tired Horses” to go along with other Dylan spoofs like his Titanic song, and even released a tune about drinking his own urine. But now Heidecker & Woods ...

With his crisp acoustic and electric guitar work and his soulful vocals that can rise to a feverish pitch, David Jacobs-Strain just might be the Bob Dylan – or, Joni Mitchell – of the Millennial generation. Heady comparisons to make, indeed, but the Oregonian native is smart like both of these musical living legends in that he understands and embraces the history of native American music (notably, blues, country, folk) and reworks it to an contemporary idiom that contemporary music fans can enjoy. His music has been celebrated by the music literati. The Washington Post compared his imagery-rich tales to Boz Scaggs and John Hammond. Guitar Player said his songs have earned “widespread respect from the contemporary blues community.”...

And this is what the title screen song for Team Meat's upcoming mystery game "Mew-Genics" sounds like. Its official title is "Mew-Genics (Cat Chase)" by Matthias Bossi (whose work and site you can find here) and Jon Evans, both of whom will be writing and composing the planned 20-song soundtrack album for the game.
Evans and Bossi won't be the only contributors, though: Team Meat co-founder Edmund McMillen teased that we can expect announcements about special guest contributors in the lead-up to the game's release.
Here's the official bios for Bossi and Evans:
Drummer/Composer Matthias Bossi (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Skeleton Key, The Book Of Knots) and Bassist/Engineer/Producer Jon Evans (Tori Amos, Linda Perry) somehow simultaneously and magically moved to the same tiny fishing village in Massachusetts. When they're not making music together, they drink coffee and chop wood.

Jefferson Airplane: After Bathing at Baxter's (RCA)
This was the Airplane's second LP of 1967, and on it they took the studio freedom their two huge hit singles had earned them and went wild and unsupervised, making a real psychedelic album rather than the carefully contrived simulation of psychedelia that had been Surrealistic Pillow. The result had more avant-garde weirdness than hit singles (RCA had unrealistic hopes for "Watch Her Ride"), but the album actually coheres far better; for all the stylistic disjunctions and studio effects and Jorma Kaukonen's often-abrasive guitar sounds, and for that matter the nine-minute instrumental trio improvisation "Spare Chaynge," it flows organically, creating its own logic.
Cream: Disraeli Gears (I'm not even a Cream fan and I still have to acknowledge the brilliance of "Strange Brew," "Sunshine of Your Love," "Tales of Brave Ulysses," and "Swlabr")

Just so you know, Yolanda Foster throws fabulous dinner parties. Yes, her husband tells some guests they're not talented enough to engage in the after-dinner sing-along, but that's mostly because it's all about him telling stories of his youth and all the famous people he's worked with. But really, they should shut up simply because they're in the presence of greatness. If he wants to tell stories about Boz Scaggs, they'd better listen! Even if they don't know who Boz Scaggs is! But I'm getting ahead of myself. A few other things happen, thank God, because just watching the Foster's fabulous dinner...

Rock guitar legend Ronnie Montrose, who played with the likes of Van Morrison, Sammy Hagar and Boz Scaggs, died Saturday (March 3). He was 64.
Montrose had an impressive start to his professional music career. When he was just 24, he played on Morrison's fabled 1971 album "Tupelo Honey." He followed that up by working with The Edgar Winter Group, playing on such songs as "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride."
Montrose then stepped out to form his own group in 1973. It was here that he helped launch the career of lead singer Hagar. While the two collaborated, they produced such rock classics as "Rock Candy" and "Bad Motor Scooter."
A statement on Montrose's website reads, "A few months ago, we held a surprise party for Ronnie Montrose's 64th birthday. He gave an impromptu speech and told us that after a long life, filled with joy and hardship, he didn't take any of our love for granted.

Guitarist Ronnie Montrose has died. He was 64. The hard-rocking bandleader most famously fronted an eponymous group in the 1970s that featured future Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar on vocals, and the group pounded out rock hits such as "Bad Motor Scooter," "Rock Candy" and "Rock the Nation." Montrose also appeared on Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey and St. Dominic's Preview albums and Edgar Winter Group's They Only Come Out at Night, as well as doing session work with Boz Scaggs, Herbie Hancock and more. Here’s an amazing late-80s commercial for the NBA featuring a series of intense highlights and celebrations all in slo-mo and set to a fittingly intense smooth jazz soundtrack. Clearly the NBA of 1987 set its marketing sights on Boz Scaggs’ fanbase, and boy did they ever succeed — today, you literally cannot think of the NBA without thinking of Boz Scaggs and vice versa. This ad actually won 5 Grammys for Christopher Cross even though he wasn’t involved: Smoothest part of the commercial? Coach Smoothie over here: (via Deadspin)...

Patterson Hood and crew made a series of mini-documentaries related to the various themes and influences the band explores on their next album, "Go-Go Boots." The eight episodes are a companion to this, their ninth studio album, due out Feb. 15th. The episode below, directed with Jason Thrasher, delves into the band's relationship with the music and mythology of Eddie Hinton -- the obscure soul singer whom Hood described as "if Otis Redding met Howlin' Wolf somewhere in the middle."
"Back in the 60's and 70's, Eddie Hinton lived and recorded in my hometown of Muscle Shoals Alabama where he was a part of the thriving music scene that was based there," Hood explains. "A triple threat (singer, guitar player and songwriter) Eddie participated in hit music by Percy Sledge, Bobby Womack, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, Dusty Springfield.... Later he made several incredible albums as a solo artist."

I very clearly remember growing up with the novel Looking For Mr. Goodbar in plain view on the bookcase in my house, and I have to admit, I was fascinated by it. There was just something about that book that screamed 'grown-up', and there was no way I was ever going to be allowed to read that ... not until I had a few more maturity miles under my belt, anyway. But, that didn't stop me from sneaking in a viewing of the 1977 film which featured the song that is today's recipient of a Scenes (Songs) We Love: She's Lonely by the one and only Bill Withers.
Most people know Withers from his classic Lean on Me (a song that I would be happy to never hear again -- it's just that overplayed) but his particular brand of soul has so much more to offer, and She's Lonely is a perfect...

If you're of a certain age, then you probably remember the 80's Country Revival. The music, the hats, the belt buckles were all back in style, and since the movies were never an art form that failed to capitalize on a trend, and in 1980, John Travolta strapped on some spurs for Urban Cowboy, and the subject of of today's Scenes Songs We Love is Boz Scaggs' contribution to the flick's highly successful soundtrack, Look What You've Done to Me.
The 1980 romantic drama was directed by James Bridges with a script by Irving Azoff and Robert Evans'. The story centered on the tumultuous love affair of a modern day cowboy and girl played by Travolta (as the hot-headed Bud) with Debra Winger as Sissy. The film also starred Scott Glenn as Sissy's abusive rebound guy, and there were appearances by country greats like Bonnie Raitt, Charlie Daniels, and Mickey Gilley.

A review of the "Cougar Town" season finale coming up just as soon as I ruin the ending of "Teen Wolf" for you... "Finding Out" was a concentrated burst of everything that's made "Cougar Town" so much fun this season. There was a fun musical gag in Ellie's various remixes of Grayson's relationship lecture. There was an ultimate version of Penny Can that also played off of Courteney Cox's career (specifically, the greatest "Friends" scene ever), while also giving us more hilarious insight into both Bobby and into Andy's obsession with him (A cheeto shaped like Bruce Willis... Boz Scaggs... uncircumcised")....

Richard "Bing" Collora has never lost his passion for making music. For more than two decades the Silicon Valley-based native of Buffalo, New York, has been performing and releasing music independently. Eight years ago, he assembled a backing band called the Bingtones that features a slew of tenured veterans that have worked with musical legends, including Boz Scaggs, Huey Lewis and Etta James. In the studio, Bing has worked with musicians whose résumés include James Brown, Blood Sweat and Tears, Tower of Power, Carlos Santana and Stevie Wonder. That pedigree is evident in the band's music, which has an old-school feel with rock-solid rhythms and infectious melodies.
"It's basically a who's who in session players," Bing explained. "At its biggest, the live band has been 12 members; it's 10 right now.
