- In March 2011 he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a revival of the play "After the Dance" at the National Theatre Lyttelton.
- In March 2013 he was nominated for an Olivier award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in "Hedda Gabler" at the Old Vic Theatre.
- In October 2020 he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in the play "Leopoldstadt" at Wyndham's Theatre.
- As of 2014, has appeared in three films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar: Gosford Park (2001), The King's Speech (2010) and Les Misérables (2012). Of those, The King's Speech (2010) is the only one which won in the category.
- He once played Billy Wilder in a British radio play about the making of "Double Indemnity".
