ReviewDespite the flaws in the script, I hope viewers will take home a deeper understanding of the justice system and that other filmmakers will attempt to emulate Shan’s sensitivity while making movies on systemic violence.TrailerScreengrab Written by Bharathy Singaravel What a relief to see Yogi Babu in a role that doesn’t make a comic element of him, but instead, gives him space to portray a flawed and deeply human character. Bommai Nayagi, by debutant director Shan, attempts to speak about child sexual assault, and how it is interlinked with caste, class, and access to justice. Yogi Babu as Velu, a labourer in a small tea shop, who is the father of nine-year-old Bommai (Sreemathi), brings to life the world-weariness of a man who knows that the system is stacked against people like him. Survival is his priority. To that effect, he thinks that if he keeps his head down,...

KollywoodFrom the colourful curses of the street to each of the characters, the film gives us a very real glimpse of gang wars.Sowmya RajendranVada Chennai is possibly the most ambitious Tamil film till date, if you consider the generous expanse of its canvas. The gangster genre is quite popular in Kollywood, given that it lends itself to “mass” action scenes and suspense, but seldom has a director dug his heels in so firmly and told the story he wants to tell without striking a compromise. Bollywood had Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur in 2012 and more recently, the Netflix series Sacred Games wove in the history of Mumbai through the rise and fall of its gangster groups. So too, Vada Chennai documents North Madras – its gullies and lanes, its dialects and politics – through warring factions. The film has a non-linear plot and at times, the changes in timeline can be confusing,...

One of them is old love or past love, the love that springs up between the hero and heroine while they are in school, college or just out of college. The other trope is moving on from one’s past love and finding it in an ‘arranged’ marriage. Or as the music band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young put it, “If you can’t have the one you love, love the one you’re with.” Very often, both tropes are present in the same story. But it is past love that filmmakers across the country find fascinating. A couple of weeks back, Anurag Kashyap’s film Manmarziyaandealt with the very same theme. It’s the latest...

KollywoodWhat was Tamil cinema like 25 years ago and how have these films aged?Nandhu SundaramI was in Plus One and my finals had ended that day. We were standing outside Raja Theatre in Nagercoil, my hometown. There were more than 65 government school students -- all of them from my batch -- standing outside, many of us still in uniform. I had never been to the movies with so many people and was very excited. My friends and I were there to watch Gentleman, the newest rage in town. One of my friends was holding on to a sack. I peered inside and found it to be full of lottery tickets. Another friend explained that they were to be used for throwing in the way of the light cast by the projector. Celebrating in this way is still the norm in many theatres across the country. It’s been more than 25 years and times have changed. Raja Theatre, which stood adjacent to the famous Nagaraja Temple, is no longer there. And, no movie will run for the 100 days that Gentleman did any more. In the streaming era of Amazon Prime and the like, films today run for about 35 days in the theatre before being shown elsewhere. Gentleman, arguably the most famous film of 1993, launched the career of director S Shankar. The songs were trendy and became hit, and thus began the famous collaboration between Shankar and composer Ar Rahman. The explosive choreography by Prabhu Deva created quite a buzz, with ‘Chikku Bukku Raile’ becoming a chartbuster. Arjun plays the lead Krishnamoorthy alias Kitcha in Gentleman and he stages multiple heists even as the police are hot on his heels. Kitcha, who has a dark and tragic past, plans to build a medical college for poor students. The film has tedious scenes involving the famous comedy duo - Goundamani and Senthil, who engage in frivolous games with Sugandi, played by Subhashri. Susheela, played by Madhubala, is the main woman lead. None of us knew it then, but the satellite TV revolution in Tamil Nadu proved to be a game-changer for movie-goers. Sun TV had just been launched with much fanfare and we would never treat the cinemas the same way again. Many of the films from 1993 are outdated and campy. Even the blockbusters released that year are not an exception. There are but a few gems that have held up well despite the ravages of time. Here, we take a look at some movies that have completed 25 years since they were first released in theatres. Nostalgia is a potent potion and many movies from 1993 bring a flood of memories with them. Take for instance, the completely inane Chinna Mapillai starring Prabhu, Sukanya, Visu and Radha Ravi. With side-splitting comedy, the movie had dialogues by Crazy Mohan and was helmed by Santhana Bharathi. With a particularly raunchy performance from actor Sivaranjani (who was briefly famous for such roles in Tamil cinema), the movie was later remade as Coolie No 1 with Govinda in the lead. Nuggets like that remind us of a time gone by when cinema was radically different from what it is today. Not all of the films from this era have endured. You may not dare to watch many films from this year on DVD. But the presence of classics like Mahanadhi and Marupadiyum more than redeem the pervading mediocrity that plagued Tamil cinema during this year. This symptom was shared by many films from the 1990s. In the January of 1993, the who’s who of Kollywood released movies. On Pongal (January 14) that year, an array of movies including Captain Magal (Dir. Bharathiraja), Jathi Malli (K Balachander), Kovil Kalai (Gangai Amaran), Marupadiyum (Balu Mahendra) and Walter Vetrivel (P Vasu) hit theatres. None of the films had their legendary directors at their best. In Captain Magal, actor Raja (a Bharathiraja favourite in those days) plays a music composer who is shot and injured when an attack is made on the life of the prime minister. To recover, he and his wife Kavitha (Kushboo in top form) move to a secluded house in the hills where bizzare happenings just don’t end. It’s a thriller that can get your teeth chattering, but none in the audience was too impressed and the film bombed. You may, however, remember the song ‘Entha Pennilum Illatha Ondru’, which became a huge hit. Jathi Malli which brought together the unlikely lead pair of Kushboo and Malayalam actor Mukesh too didn’t do well at the box office. Kushboo plays a Ghazal singer Sivaranjani, who moves to Ooty, after her mother is killed by terrorists. She finds in Kesavan (Mukesh) an unlikely source of solace, but will their hesitant courtship fructify? The late Balachander may have wanted his message of love triumphing terror to reach the masses, but no one was willing to listen. Kovil Kalai must be the most puzzling entry to notch up 25 years since release. Directed by Gangai Amaran, the film must have been regressive even for its times, but is positively bizzare by today’s standards. Made just four years after Amaran’s Karakattakaran, which stuck box office gold, Kovil Kalai, starring Vijayakanth and Kanaka, did reasonably well.at the box office. P Vasu is one of those directors who asks us to digest his films with dollops of sentiment. Best known for movies like Chinna Thambi, Vasu’s take on a cop’s life, Walter Vetrivel, may leave you cold today, but was a massive hit upon release. Sathyaraj's performance as Vetrivel brought audiences in droves to the theatre. The film just appropriated the popularity of former Tamil Nadu director general of police Walter Devaram and had no references to the life of the cop. In the title sequence of the movie, Sathyaraj delivers a line which might be a bit strange today. He says that if rowdies are allowed to roam freely, they would divide and sell the state in 25 years. Thank god, that hasn’t happened! Balu Mahendra’s film, Marupadiyum, starring Revathi, is the only one among the aforementioned movies to have dated gracefully. With his remake of Arth, Mahendra managed to deliver a film that both critics and audiences liked. Rajinikanth was pretty active in 1993. He appeared in three Tamil movies -- Uzhaippali, Yejaman and Valli. The films were box office successes, but may not figure among Rajini’s best. Kamal Haasan had a mixed year. Both Kalaignan and Maharasan were but blips in his career, but Mahanadi was a definite indication of how good a writer the actor was. The National Award winning movie was a tearjerker directed by Santhana Bharathi with whom Kamal would frequently collaborate. The late Malayalam actor, Cochin Haneefa, played the antagonist and his contribution as the sleazy child trafficker cannot be taken lightly. Puthiya Mugam, starring Revathi and her husband Suresh Menon, was an unforgettable movie experience for me. The thriller with its novel and imaginative use of plastic surgery had a couple of moments that were bone-chilling. The soundtrack from Rahman continues to remain among his best. The album also showed lyricist Vairamuthu in superb form. Bharathiraja made another movie that year and it was Kizhakku Cheemayile. I have always thought that Bharathiraja handled sentiment the best in Tamil cinema and that opinion was validated by this movie starring Vijayakumar and Radhika as inseparable siblings. Rahman’s score for this film remains popular even today. Sathyaraj returned to woo audiences with Malayalam director Joshi’s Airport, which rarely for Tamil cinema, had no songs. Though acclaimed by critics, the film didn’t do too well at the box office. Mani Ratnam’s Thiruda Thiruda was one of the better movies released that year. Featuring Prasanth, Anand, Heera and Anu Aggarwal, the movie traces the fate of Rs 1000 crore stolen from the government. With superb camerawork from PC Sreeram, which infused in it a spirit of adventure, the movie was welcomed by audiences and critics. However, I feel that the film is today among the most underrated of Ratnam’s flicks. Prathap was written, directed and produced by actor Arjun. Though Arjun’s film never quite made it into the big league, films like Prathap kept the actor in the market for biggies like Mudhalvan. In 1993, Ks Ravikumar directed three films -- Bandmaster (Sarath Kumar), Suriya Chandran (Anand Babu) and Purusha Lakshanam (Jayaram). We might never guess it, but Ravi Kumar went on to direct both Haasan and Rajini in many movies. It is hard to find common ground among the movies released in 1993. Many films featured songs with rain on the sets. Shots focussing on the leading lady’s navel or the cleavage were mandatory. The loss of the story in Tamil cinema was a complaint that was often heard. My friends often told me that line 'You can watch the movie once'. Naturally, word of mouth made a huge difference in making a movie a success. This was also the year that Ajith Kumar debuted with his movie, Amaravathi. For many of the actor’s fans, this would have been a really special moment. Despite all this, many of the movies from 1993 were so far removed from reality that we can now easily see what frustrated audiences. So when artificiality was replaced by the raw realism of New Cinema, movie-goers made sure they welcomed it whole-heartedly.

KollywoodPromoted as a perfect festival film that the entire family can watch in the theatre, the movie stars Keerthy Suresh as the female lead.Digital NativeThe Suriya starrer Thaana Serntha Kootam, which was a Pongal release this year, is racing towards the Rs 100 crore club. According to trade reports, the film has collected Rs 90 crore during its 10-day run at the box office worldwide. In Tamil Nadu alone, it has collected Rs 42.3 crore, report sources. While the film grossed Rs 67.50 crore in India, the collections stood at Rs 22.50 crore from overseas. With positive word of mouth spreading about the film, the collections are expected to go up further. Directed by Vignesh Shivan, the film stars Suriya and Keerthy Suresh as the lead pair. Karthik, Rj Balaji and Baahubali star Ramya Krishnan also play important roles in the movie. Others in the star cast include Senthil, Nandha, Suresh Chandra Menon, Sivasankar, Sathyan, and Vinodhini Vaidyanathan. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the soundtrack and Bgm for this heist film with Dinesh Krishnan cranking the camera and A Sreekar Prasad editing it. Produced by Ke Gnanavel Raja under his banner Studio Green, the film is based on the Bollywood hit movie Special 26, which had Akshay Kumar in the lead role. Thaana Serntha Kootam was released in Telugu as well under the title Gang and is doing well in Andhra and Telangana regions. Interestingly, Suriya dubbed in Telugu for the first time in his career. While the film is doing well at the theatres, it may be mentioned here that its pre-release business shattered some earlier records. Promoted as a perfect festival film that the entire family can watch in the theatre, the film’s collection at the box office proves just that. The film was appreciated by the Censor Board officials for not including any smoking or drinking scenes, Suriya said prior to its release. Suriya is gearing up for his next with director Selvaraghavan; the film was launched recently and the team is set to kick off the shooting from February. Meanwhile, he will join hands with filmmaker Kv Anand for the third time later this year. This film will go on the floors after he wraps up the yet-untitled Selvaraghavan project. Anand and Suriya have previously worked together in Ayan and Maattraan. Without divulging much information about the project, Suriya said he’s kicked about joining hands with Anand, whose last directorial was Kavan. Content provided by Digital Native.

EntertainmentThe incident happened when the star was at a theatre in Rajamundhry to promote his recently released film Gang. Digital NativeDigital NativeIt is well-known that Tamil star Suriya has a huge fan following in Andhra and Telangana regions as well. So, when the star was at a theatre in Rajamundhry to promote his recently released film Gang, which is the Telugu dubbed version of the Tamil movie Thaana Serntha Kootam, he literally had to evade his fans by scaling a closed gate to get into his car outside. Suriya interacted with the fans present at the theatre but at one point it became unmanageable with fans crowding him to get their selfies clicked. When the star and his managers realized that it would go beyond their control, they decided to make it to a closed gate and jump off the other side where his car was waiting. Images of Suriya scaling the closed gate and jumping off have gone viral on the internet. Well, it shows that fan frenzy can get bizarre at times and the stars have to resort to such stunts in real life. Thaana Serntha Kootam / Gang, a heist thriller has been directed by Vignesh ShivN of Poda Podi and Naanum Rowdy Thaan fame. The film has Suriya and Keerthy Suresh playing the lead pair with the yesteryear hero Karthik and Ramya Krishnan in pivotal roles. The rest of the star cast includes Senthil, Nandha, Nirosha, Anand Raj, Suresh Chandra Menon, Sivasankar, Sathyan, Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, Rj Balaji and Thambi Ramaiah. Anirudh Ravichander scored music for this flick with Dinesh Krishnan cranking the camera and A Sreekar Prasad editing it. Ke Gnanavel Raja produced Thaana Serntha Kootam / Gang on a huge budget. The film opened to positive reviews and is touted to be a box office success as far as collections are concerned. Continuing its excellent run in the film’s extended opening weekend, it has grossed over Rs 35 crore in the first four days at the worldwide box office and in Chennai alone, it has raked in over Rs 3.08 crore.

KollywoodFor Suriya, who plays the role of an educated man who wishes to join the Cbi, this movie comes after several poorly received films.Priyanka ThirumurthyLet me start off by declaring that I haven’t watched Special 26, the Akshay Kumar starrer which has been remade into Vignesh Shivan’s latest film Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (Tsk). So, this review is not coloured by comparisons to the Hindi blockbuster. Tsk is a bold heist movie, a concept that has not often been brought to the big screen in Tamil cinema. For Suriya, who plays the hero, this movie comes after several poorly received films. So, to say that it was refreshing to see him comfortable in the role of a young man disillusioned by systemic corruption, is an understatement. The movie is set in 1987 and Suriya plays the role of an educated man who wishes to join the Cbi. He wants to conduct raids and expose corrupt politicians, businessmen, and clean up the system. But Uthaman, a corrupt Cbi officer played by Suresh Menon, acts as a hurdle to this dream and further insults Suriya for having lofty aspirations when he is just the son of a clerk. The hero, who is from a humble background, sees that his friends too are unable to join various government departments due to their lack of resources to pay officials bribes. Enraged by this, he brings together a group of con artists who decide to perform raids by pretending to be Cbi and Income Tax (It) officials. This is where the fun begins. The sequence where the ‘officials’ led by Ramya Krishnan raid a minister’s house is effortlessly funny. Comedians, including Senthil and Sathyan, add to the hilarity with their timing. Ramya Krishnan shines in the role given to her and the director allows the audience a peek into her character’s life, explaining the reason she took up the con job. The other actors, however, provide little or no reason for their need to cheat people for a living. Suriya, who is not new to playing the role of a government authority, is convincing and at his stoic best. The movie shifts from Chennai to rural Tamil Nadu and even Hyderabad as the actual Cbi begin to tail the con group. Yesteryear actor Karthik plays an upright official roped in to catch the gang and it is a match of wit against wit. The climax of the film provides a line of thought that remains problematic in terms of solving the inherent corruption in the system. Clues are given through the movie about the hero’s solution to the problem, but I can’t help but think that it would only lead to further disaster. While Anirudh Ravichander’s background music adds the much required flavour to the film, the sheer number of songs in the first half is a put off. It slows down a screenplay that could have kept you at the edge of your seat to the occasional raising of an eyebrow. The time spent making the characters dance would have been put to better use if their histories and reasons for choosing such a path was explained. You can’t really empathise with anyone but Suriya throughout the film. A special mention must be given to the art direction. Karaikal and Pollachi have both been picturised beautifully, and it looks like a constant carnival. Effort has been made to ensure the vehicles, buildings and electronics shown in the film represent the 80s. The fight sequences have also been choreographed very carefully. And yes, there is a heroine (Keerthi Suresh) but perhaps the film would have been much racier without yet another distraction from the actual plot. Disclaimer: This review was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Neither Tnm nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew.

EntertainmentAnand and Suriya have previously worked together in Ayan and Maattraan. Digital NativeDigital NativeSuriya has an exciting line-up of films this year. As he awaits the release of Thaana Serntha Kootam, a remake of Akshay Kumar’s Special 26 which is due to hit the screens this week, he has officially confirmed that he will join hands with filmmaker Kv Anand for the third time later this year. This film will go on the floors after he wraps up the yet-untitled Selvaraghavan project. Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad while promoting Gang, the Telugu dubbed version of Thaana Serntha Kootam, Suriya said: “After my film with Selvaraghavan, I’ll work with Kv Anand. The film will most likely go on the floors from April.” Anand and Suriya have previously worked together in Ayan and Maattraan. Without divulging much information about the project, Suriya said he’s kicked about joining hands with Anand, whose last directorial was Kavan. During the interaction, Suriya also confirmed he is in discussions with director Hari and Vikram Kumar for future collaboration. With Hari, Suriya has delivered the highly popular Singam franchise and the science-fiction action flick 24 with Vikram Kumar. Asked if he’d do another Singam film with Hari, he said: “This won’t be another Singam project. I usually team up with Hari sir once in a couple or three years. I work with him on projects that help me expand my market. I still remember the time when we didn’t have the budget to do 7 am Arivu as nobody was willing to bet on the film. A couple of months later Singam first part released and turned out to be a blockbuster. The success of Singam earned me the license to do 7 am Arivu. I need to do a film like Singam once in a while to experiment with projects such as 24.” Unlike his Singam avatar where he sported a handlebar moustache, Suriya will be seen in a variety of looks in Thaana Serntha Kootam. Tipped to be a full-length heist comedy, it’s after a long gap Suriya has decided to try his hands at comedy and this shift from regular action films might work in his favour. Directed by Vignesh Shivn, the film also stars Keerthy Suresh, Ramya Krishnan, Karthik and Senthil in important roles.

Only the core theme of the film has been retained while the rest has been changed to suit the nativity of the audiences, he is reported to have said during a recent media interaction. Reports indicate that the producers of Tsk had purchased the remake rights to do away with the legal issues should they arise in the future and that is the reason behind the team not promoting it as a remake. Interestingly, Tsk will be released in both Tamil as well as Telugu simultaneously on January 12 for Sankaranthi next year. The film is produced by Ke Gnanavelraja under his banner Studio Green. The Telugu version is titled as Gang. Starring Suriya and Keerthy Suresh as the lead pair, the film has veteran actor Karthik in a pivotal role. Director Vignesh Shivan is very particular of not repeating his supporting cast, and has gone for a fresh cast. It also has Suresh Chandra Menon, Sudhakar, Ramya Krishnan, Senthil, Sathyan, Shivashankar, Kalaiyarasan, Nandha, Rj Balaji, Anandaraj and Brahmanandam in the star cast. Anirudh has composed the tunes for this flick with Dinesh Krishnan being the cinematographer and Sreekar Prasad editing it. It may be mentioned that Special 26, a period heist crime thriller, was directed by Neeraj Pandey and starred Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher, Kajal Aggarwal, in the lead roles. It hit the screens in 2013. Enanble Notification: NoTNM Marquee: No...
