The much anticipated Friends reunion did a whole lot more than just reunite the six main friends. If you've already watched the big event, which just made its debut on HBO Max, you may have noticed that the set seems to have been restored almost perfectly. It looks frozen in time, like it's just been sitting there waiting for the cast to return since the 2004 finale. That is, of course, far from the truth. Production designer John Shaffner, who designed the set with his life and work partner Joe Stewart all the way back in 1994, worked tirelessly to track down every piece of the set that could be found, a full 17 years after it had all been taken apart. Oscar nominees “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” were the big winners Saturday night at the 24th annual Art Directors Guild Awards (held at The InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown). Barbara Ling’s elegiac recreation of 1969 Hollywood beat Dennis Gassner’s innovative period work on Sam Mendes’ one-shot, World War I extravaganza “1917” for the period prize, while Lee Ha Jun’s extraordinary production design on Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” took contemporary honors. The wins for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” suggest they are not out of the running for the Production Design Oscar.
Oscar ballots are in voters hands, due Tuesday, February 4.
Meanwhile, “Avengers: Endgame” and “Toy Story 4 ” earned Adg awards for fantasy and animation.
Ling performed a 50-year facelift on Hollywood Blvd. and Westwood Village. The restoration included such bygone cultural fixtures as the Pussycat Theater, the psychedelic Aquarius Theatre (which opened “Hair” in 1968), and Peaches Records & Tapes.

After months of For Your Consideration events, boxes and boxes of screeners, billboards all around Los Angeles and too many interviews, photo shoots and podcast recordings to even count, Television Academy voters will finally have their say on this year’s Primetime Emmy race starting this Monday.
Phase One ballots are out, and the more than 20,000 TV Academy members eligible to vote will now get to decide ultimately which shows, talent and below-the-line craftspeople will receive a coveted Emmy nomination. Some of this year’s top races are more competitive than in past years, including the return of one past winner (“Game of Thrones”) and the absence of another (“Veep”).
Unlike past years, there aren’t any major rules changes to shake up the race, but it could be argued that more money has been spent than ever as the list of shows in the hunt continues to grow. And with no guaranteed frontrunners yet,...

“You can’t underestimate how that story of working class America has resonated with the public,” says production designer John Shaffner about the success of the “Roseanne” revival. Before he read the first script for the reboot, which picks up 20 years after the original series ended, Shaffner thought, “Why are we bringing this show back? How is it going to be as good, how’s it going to be better?” But to his surprise the script was “on the right track,” and by the time of the first table reading with returning cast members Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman, “it was just like revisiting family.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Shaffner above.

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

If Christopher Nolan’s emotional plots don’t strike you, his elaborate design choices will on some level. He’s a guy who decided he needed to build all of Gotham City’s "The Narrows" on a stage, thought to put a ornate hotel hallway on a gimbal, and built a full-scale spaceship with windows displaying actual scenic black hole shots. The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...
