Of all the unofficial holidays derived from an apocryphal bit police code, 4/20 is by far the most enduring. And just as “420” has gradually become entrenched as stoner shorthand for marijuana, the date April 20 has become an opportunity not just for college kids looking to indulge in a little extralegal fun, but also for drug law reformers and other advocacy groups to stump for a more reasonable national attitude toward America’s big green weed of choice.
And as marijuana laws have shifted over the years—from outright prohibition, to limited medicinal usage, to tightly regulated recreational use within certain states—marijuana themed movies have likewise evolved. Once upon a time, the only movies that even touched the subject of pot were hysterical propaganda pieces like Reefer Madness. Then, from the 1960s onward, weed became a popular (and hip) subject of broad comedy—in everything from Animal House to Annie Hall to Friday.

Next year’s Golden Globes promises to be a major relaunch for the troubled awards show as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) continues to seek ways to reinvent the event, according to president Helen Hoehne.
Speaking at the Zurich Film Festival on Saturday, Hoehne listed the changes the HFPA has undertaken to address the criticisms that led to a major industry boycott of the show this year.
The HFPA has over the past year “made diversity, equity and inclusion really the cornerstone of our organization. We changed our governance because, as you know, a lot of the award shows are under fire, not just for diversity issues but because of corruption, because of all sorts of other things. And we cleaned up.

Production budgets on U.S. independent movies are regularly too high to make them viable in the international sales marketplace, but it’s no easy task for producers to cut them, said speakers at the Zurich Summit yesterday (September 28).

“Budgets have come down but they still should come down a lot more”, the sales vet posited. “U.S. films often need to come down by up to 50%. It feels like if you’re making European films, budgets are ok.”

The first trailer for Blake Lively’s long-anticipated spy thriller “The Rhythm Section” is here. Lively’s got dark hair, an icy cold stare and is looking to settle things “with violence.”
The movie, based on Mark Burnell’s book, as well as his own screenplay, comes from “The Handmaid’s Tale” director Reed Morano and stars Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown in what could be the start of a franchise led by the long-time producers of the James Bond films, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli.
Lively stars as Stephanie Patrick, an ordinary woman who turns self-destructive and with nothing to lose after her family is killed in a plane crash, one that turns out not to be just an accident. She then turns to a dark, complex world and enlists the help of Law’s character to seek revenge on those responsible and find her own redemption.

Michael Fassbender is all set to star in and produce a new spy franchise ‘Malko’ at Lionsgate. An adaptation of Gerard de Villiers’ bestselling S.A.S. book series.
American Hustle scribe Eric Warren Singer will adapt the story that follows Malko Linge, an Austrian nobleman and freelance CIA operative who spent his formative years in a special Nazi work camp for captured spies, where he learned the intricate dark arts of tradecraft from the best. Now an adult living in a reclaimed family manor fallen into disrepair, Malko becomes a spy for hire. He is the ultimate agent without an agency — a gentleman warrior without a country who works according to his own moral code, and lives the only way a man who has grown up in the face of death can — with a wicked wit and a lust for all things in life, even the things that might kill him.
