Dynasty, the CW’s reboot of the beloved ABC sudser from the ’80s, came to an end Friday night after five seasons. Here, showrunner Josh Reims talks about what he really wanted to do in the last episode, and how odd it was that ratings for the sudser were never really discussed.
Deadline: Did you have enough time to plan for a series finale?
Josh Reims We actually planned a series finale and a season finale, just in case. We did twice the work, basically.
Did you know you wanted to end with the wedding?
Reims That came up near the end. For some reason we kept ending seasons with weddings and we thought it would be fun to do it again. We figured Culhane (Robert C. Riley) and Nina (Felisha Terrell) were the best couple to do it, and we liked the idea of playing around and having viewers...

Netflix is developing a new limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden,” Variety has confirmed.
The series, which is still in early development, will be written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather, Elia Kazan, helmed the 1955 film adaptation of Steinbeck’s novel. Florence Pugh is attached to star in the series, though the character she will play remains unconfirmed. Anonymous Content and Endeavor Content will co-produce the series.
Published in 1952, Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” is set in California’s Salinas Valley over a period that stretches from the Civil War to the end of World War I. The epic novel tells the interconnected stories of the Hamilton family, an Irish immigrant family with nine children, and the Trask family, lead by the wealthy Adam Trask. With Dallas slated to return as a new TV series next summer on TNT, it seems like only a matter of time before someone tries to bring back Dynasty, the other blockbuster primetime soap of the 1980s.
Earlier this year, Dynasty co-creator Richard Shapiro said that he and wife Esther were actually working on a prequel feature film that would be set in the 1960s. Shapiro said it would take place in the early Kennedy years and revolve around Blake's discovery that he's the heir to the family fortune and his love affair with Alexis.
Shapiro noted, "We've given thought to the movie before and we've been approached by a lot of companies, but no one seemed to have a proper fix on it. Then suddenly we said, 'Let's do it [ourselves]!' -- and we're the ones to do it."...

The 1970s was a significant decade in the history of American cinema. The sometimes wild experimentation of the avant garde movement of the 1960s had pretty much disappeared by the mid 70s. The decade gave birth to the adult film industry (Deep Throat), the modern slasher film (the one-two punch of Halloween and Friday The 13th), and the Hollywood blockbuster (Jaws and later Star Wars). The exploitation film subgenre (blaxploitation, sexploitation, etc.) peaked and gave way to teen comedies and horror films. The Western was all but dead. However, in 1976 American International Pictures released a wonderfully offbeat and satisfying Western comedy into this rapidly changing marketplace, The Great Scout And Cathouse Thursday, which regrettably is Not available on DVD.

Joan Collins is tipping British actress Gemma Arterton to take on her famous Alexis Carrington character in a movie prequel to her hit TV series Dynasty.
The popular show, which ran from 1981 until 1989, focused on a rich oil family in Colorado and starred late actor John Forsythe as tycoon Blake Carrington, alongside Linda Evans and Collins.
Creator Richard Shapiro recently revealed plans to bring back the show back for a big screen outing, explaining the new film will tell fans how the family came into its oil fortune.
And Collins - whose addition to the cast helped make the show a huge hit - hopes Bond girl Arterton will play a younger version of her most famous character.
She tells Britain's Daily Express, “She (Arterton) has all the qualities that Alexis needs. She’s sexy, she looks clever and she’s kind of vixenous."...

It’s the 80s revival you’ve been waiting for.

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has ruled that the 1985 Dire Straits song "Money For Nothing" cannot be played in Canada unless the word faggot is edited out. Personally I've never much cared for the song, (I much prefer "Sultans of Swing"), but in the context of the lyrics (it's the point of view of an ignorant delivery guy making custom kitchen deliveries...

Two key series that ran in the late 70's and early 80's are making comebacks, albeit in different ways.
"Dynasty" creators Richard and Esther Shapiro revealed that they are developing a feature film based on the popular soap opera about a wealthy oil family. The film will serve almost as a prequel of sorts with the action taking place during the 1960s and the tone akin to "Mad Men" reports Coming Soon
"It's fun, because the fans of the show will know from the series where each of the characters end up eventually, but what they won't know is how they get there. There will be some very unlikely twists and situations, and people will not be expecting a lot of what we're planning...The movie will be the old Dynasty, of course, but with horns" says Richard Shapiro.
A script is currently in the works, though now studio has yet been attached

25 years ago the rich and powerful dominated evening television. Soap operas like Dallas, Falcon Crest and Dynasty ruled the air and achieved regular standing in the week's top 5 most watched TV shows. These programs weren't much different in their plots than the standard soap opera fare that could be seen during the daytime on the networks, but when it came to their budgets and displaying their main characters wearing lavish evening gowns, jewels and big 80s hair, the evening soaps had their little sisters beat hands down.
Proving that everything that once was a popular TV show will eventually become a feature movie, plans are afoot to create a movie based on the ABC series Dynasty. Airing from 1981 to 1989, the show gave Joan Collins her second career as a Milf in the top wage bracket. Playing the villainous Alexis Carrington, Collins was the evil bitch that everyone loved to hate...

It's hard to imagine the 80's TV series 'Dynasty' without hulking, bedazzled shoulder pads, a feathered, Aqua Net-heavy coiffure and Joan Collins' glossy sneer, but the soap opera is being brought to the big screen -- 'Mad Men' style. 'Dynasty' creators Richard and Esther Shapiro are trading the age of excess for the 1960s in order to trace the roots of the show's characters.
The Shapiros are anxious to explore the saga of the wealthy Denver family in the oil business without the constraints of a small budget TV series. "In the movie, if we want to have some James Bond style action, we can afford to do that. If we want to have a steamy love scene, we can do that. If we want to go a few steps beyond what they would allow on 1980s TV, we can move ahead those few steps,...

Hit 1980s soap opera Dynasty is set to be revived for a new movie prequel.
The popular show, which ran from 1981 until 1989, focused on a rich oil family in Colorado and starred late actor John Forsythe as tycoon Blake Carrington, alongside Linda Evans and Joan Collins.
Original Dynasty creator Richard Shapiro has now announced plans to bring the show back for a big screen outing, and he's revealed the new film will be set before the TV series and show how Forsythe's character discovers he is heir to an oil fortune.
Shapiro tells E! Online, "We've given thought to the movie before and we've been approached by a lot of companies, but no one seemed to have a proper fix on it. Then suddenly we said, 'Let's do it (ourselves)!' - and we're the ones to do it... It was my daughter Florie's notion to do a prequel, and that sounded very very good to us.
"It's how young Blake doesn't realise he's the son of Tom Carrington, but then he finds himself at the head of this company and surrounded by assassins and people who want to do him in."
Rival 1980s drama series Dallas is also set to make a comeback - TV bosses are planning a new small screen version of the hit show.

Dynasty creator Richard Shapiro has revealed that the series will soon get a big screen adaptation. Speaking to E! Online, Shapiro explained that the film would serve as a prequel to the 1970s TV show - which focused on the wealthy Carrington family - and would hopefully be the first in a franchise. "It was my daughter Florie's notion to do a prequel, and that sounded very, very good to us," he said. Big news out of Hollywood today, as E! Online is reporting that the long-running prime time soap opera “Dynasty” is finally heading to the big screen.
Grandma is going to be over the moon.
Okay, okay, we’re just kidding. But for those of you who were born since “Dynasty” went off the air in 1989, here’s a refresher: the series — which debuted on ABC in 1981 and went on to become a pop culture phenomenon over its nine seasons — starred original silver fox John Forsythe as Blake Carrington, an oil magnate with a load of money and even more personal troubles, most of them caused by fights between his wife Krystal (Linda Evans) and his ex-wife Alexis (Joan Collins).
So how is series creator Richard Shapiro going to make “Dynasty” relevant for a new generation that may have never even heard of the show? One word: prequel.
“It was my...

'Dynasty' may be getting its next chapter. On film.
The massive 1980's soap opera about a rich oil family in Colorado ran from 1981-1989, registering as the number one show on television in 1985. E! Online spoke with the show's creator, Richard Shapiro, who said that the film is very much on -- but will be a prequel, set in the 1960's.
"It was my daughter Florie's notion to do a prequel, and that sounded very very good to us," Shapiro said.. It's how young Blake doesn't realize he's the son of Tom Carrington, but then he finds himself at the head of this company and surrounded by assassins and people who want to do him in."
The original show featured John Forsythe as Blake Carrington and Linda Evans playing Krystle, his secretary-turned-second wife. When Joan Collins joined the cast in the second season as Carrington's conniving first wife,...

Move over, Dallas! There's another classic prime-time soap from the '80s headed for a big-screen reboot… I just got word that a Dynasty movie is in the works. Words cannot express how much I am dying over this news. It...is...beyond! Dynasty creator Richard Shapiro tells me the movie, a prequel to the hit '80s soap, will be set in the 1960s. "It's not the wild and crazy 1960s, but the early Kennedy years," he said. The story will focus on Blake's discovery that he's heir to the Carrington empire and his love affair with Alexis. The original Aaron Spelling-produced Dynasty series centered on Denver's oil-rich Carrington family, headed by patriarch...
