In my first review for the slapstick chronicles of silly villager Ah Niu (Ye Feng) and his Big Uncle (Wang Sha), we unpack the terror of living in a city ravaged by progress, alongside the guilt of desiring to partake in its consumerist pleasures. We learn an unspoken ‘truth' that for Ah Niu, the childlike icon of innocence, to remain a good person, he must remain poor. Lo and behold, the third of “The Crazy Bumpkins” series: “Big Times for the Crazy Bumpkins” (1976), sees a bag of money and jewels accidentally falling into Ah Niu's lap, making him actually rich. After 2 iterations of largely repeated gags, John Lo Mar's moral reflections on life in the new city enters a new curve, coming to a head in “Crazy Bumpkins in Singapore” (1976). Though this narrative shift is likely practical, it also ironically reveals the films' contradiction, as a marketed Shaw Brothers' product criticizing consumerist culture.

A monster ape-man smashes Hong Kong accompanied by his adopted daughter, a sexy blonde in a daringly abbreviated bikini. The lavishly produced King Kong rip-off was released here under the title Goliathon; Quentin Tarantino raised its profile with a 1999 ‘Rolling Thunder’ reissue. Beyond absurd, all the way to insane, the Shaw Bros.’ crazy kaiju hybrid is now the lone non-martial arts title in Arrow’s multi-disc Shawscope: Volume One mega-box. With 12 features on eight discs, it’s a gift from heaven for the average fan of Hong Kong action movies.

Shawscope Volume One , a 10-Disc Mega-Box Set with Twelve Movies featuring Hong Kong’s biggest stars will be available December 28th from Arrow Video
After an undisputed reign at the peak of Hong Kong’s film industry in the 1960s, Shaw Brothers (the studio founded by real-life brothers Run Run and Runme Shaw) found their dominance challenged by up-and-coming rivals in the early 1970s. They swiftly responded by producing hundreds of the most iconic action films ever made, revolutionizing the genre through the hard work of top-shelf talent on both sides of the camera as well as unbeatable widescreen production value, much of it shot at ‘Movietown’, their huge, privately-owned studio on the outskirts of Hong Kong.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with an assessment of an obscure period chiller expertly assembled by Shen Hsiang Yu. One of the Shaw Brothers’ early attempts at screen horror, this superior gothic romance with a supernatural twist failed to find an audience upon its initial domestic release — a circumstance that led to the studio changing tack and pursuing a more exploitative line of genre flick. However, 45 years on it plays like the kind of film that jaded and/or discerning genre fans might well take great delight in discovering.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton offers an assessment of one of the Shaw Brothers’ quirkier and more idiosyncratic historical martial arts efforts: an action-packed Meng Hua Ho wuxia flick from 1976 that concerns an irredeemable killer sent on a mission to save the life of a despicable and hated tyrant. Outstanding fight choreography, unusual weaponry and unpredictable plot twists help make this frenetically paced show a winner.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with coverage of two well-regarded wuxia films (period martial arts movies set in ancient China). One is an intense action flick from the Shaw Brothers Studio that places a heavy emphasis on bloody and gory depictions of swordplay. The second is a wuxia film with a difference: rather than fancy sword moves or flamboyant punching techniques, the mystical fighters attack each other with incantations and magical musical instruments.

There was indeed a movie planned for this week’s Shaw Brothers column, but in light of the recent sad news regarding Sir Run Run Shaw’s passing, a more tasteful move here is to dedicate this space to the man with a few words about what he meant to fans, kung fu, and film.
There is a plethora of sources to read about Run Run Shaw’s life (his Chinese name is actually Shao Renleng), especially in recent days as most cultural media journalists provided the requisite plot points to the man’s life story (and his rarely mentioned contribution to 1982′s Blade Runner) in the wake of his death. Today’s column shall therefore sidestep the obvious route, preferring to consider his legacy, what it means and how he went about building it sky high.

Hong Kong (AP) - Run Run Shaw built a Hong Kong movie and TV empire that nurtured rising talents like actor Chow Yun-fat and director John Woo, inspired Hollywood filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino and produced the 1982 sci-fi classic "Blade Runner."
Shaw's prolific studio helped bring kung fu films to the world but he also passed on the chance to sign one of the biggest names in that genre: the young Bruce Lee.
The missed opportunity was a rare misstep for Shaw, who died Tuesday, according to a statement from Television Broadcasts Limited (Tvb), which he helped found in 1967. No cause of death was given.
His studio gave his age as 107, but his age according to the Western counting method may have been 106 because Chinese traditionally consider a child to be 1 at birth. Tvb said he was born in 1907, but would not provide his birth date.

The man behind the incredibly inspirational studio known as The Shaw Brothers, Run Run Shaw, has passed on at the glorious age of 107 years old. While he never worked directly within the horror genre, we'd be remiss if we didn't take a moment to honor this true legend of cinema.
From the Official Release

If you’re at all a fan of older kung fu films, then the Shaw Brothers should pretty much be legends to you. The Shaw Brothers got started way back in 1924, setting up their own cinema. Led by Run Run and Runme Shaw, they amassed a large number of cinemas before venturing into producing their own films in the 1960s. They went on to make hundreds of films, specializing in martial arts films and quickly becoming the leaders in that genre. While Five Element Ninjas is certainly a less well known Shaw Brother’s title, their style and kung fu action are on full display. After a difficult competition with a group of thugs, the Martial Artist Alliance returns to their headquarters to discover that their Master was poisoned during the proceedings. To make matters worse, they are issued a challenge by the mysterious Five Elements Formation, a group of ninjas trained in a Japanese martial art...
