Mort Engelberg, who was a producer on films including Smokey and the Bandit and The Big Easy before transitioning into politics as an “advance man” for Bill Clinton and other presidential candidates, died Saturday in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 86.
“He was a wonderful person, a wonderful husband. He loved the movie business, and he loved his work with President Clinton,” his wife, Helaine Blatt, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He told the best stories of anyone I ever met, the best jokes.”
Born and raised in Memphis, Engelberg graduated from the University of Illinois and then spent a year working on a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri. He left school before completing that degree and worked as a journalist for a few years before moving to Washington in 1961 to work for Sargent Shriver, the director of the then-newly formed Peace Corps, and later...

Mort Engelberg, a producer of the films Smokey And The Bandit and The Big Easy, has passed away. Engelberg was 86, and he died in Los Angeles in the company of his wife, Helaine Blatt, a success herself as a high-end jewelry broker.
Engelberg was producing films when he took time away from his day job and organized a famous bus tour taken by Arkansas governor and presidential aspirant Bill Clinton and his running mate Al Gore through numerous states the summer after the Democratic Convention in 1992. Engelberg served a similar role previously for candidates Walter F. Mondale in 1984 and Michael Dukakis in 1988. For Clinton, the bus tour was a rousing success. It bonded Clinton, Gore and their wives, and presenting the amiable presidential candidate as an everymen who thrived mixing with real people in cities across the country. It would become a trademark for Clinton’s successful two presidential runs.

Maria Shriver may not be a television news regular these days, but her interest in the world around her hasn't lessened.
The NBC News special correspondent and former California first lady likely would contend it only has increased, given her role in such initiatives as "The Alzheimer's Project" -- the award-winning HBO documentary largely inspired by the experience of Shriver's late father, politician and activist Sargent Shriver, with the disease -- and her recently issued Shriver Report subtitled "A Woman's Nation Pushes Back From the Brink," about women and children living on the poverty line in modern America.
Related to the report is "Paycheck to Paycheck: The Life & Times of Katrina Gilbert," a documentary Shriver executive produced for HBO, where it debuts Monday, March 17 (and then will be offered free for the next week at HBO.com, ShriverReport.org and YouTube.com). Former United States Senator, and Presidential candidate, George McGovern.
In 2005, I had the good fortune to interview former Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern for Venice Magazine, in conjunction with the release of Stephen Vittoria's documentary "One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern," which looked at McGovern's ill-fated 1972 bid for the White House. During our interview, and during a lengthy dinner at Kate Mantilini in Beverly Hills several months later, (which happened to fall on what would have been the 80th birthday of his close friend, Robert F. Kennedy), McGovern was thoughtful, direct, and kind-hearted; a gentleman and a gentle man. When we raised a glass to toast Bobby Kennedy's memory, Senator McGovern said quietly "Bobby made us all want to be better people." A more fitting valediction of George McGovern couldn't be said. Rest in peace.

Total Recall – My Unbelievably True Life Story merely confirms our suspicions: that nothing brings Arnie more pleasure than himself
Oho! What gift is this from the celebrity gods, floating down on to the Lost in Showbiz desk? Why, it's Arnold Schwarzenegger's 650-page autobiography, Total Recall – My Unbelievably True Life Story. While LiS is dismayed to lose its long-running bet that the title would be I Told You I'd Be Back – And I Am!, the subtitle does provide consolations with its pleasing similarity to Gary Shteyngart's tale of a plucky immigrant in America, Super Sad True Love Story, but Arnified. Thank you, celebrity gods! Tools down, everyone – it's a Lost in Showbiz book group special.
The first thing to say is that this is not a celebrity autobiography. Trust me, I have a degree in celebrity autobiographies from TMZ.com University, and this is not a contribution to that noble genre.

Taylor held hands with boyfriend Conor during an emotional visit to the gravesite of his mother, Mary Richardson Kennedy. After a romantic stroll along the coast of Cape Cod, Taylor Swift joined her boyfriend Conor Kennedy and his family at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery to visit the gravesite of Mary Richardson Kennedy. As the two honored Conor's departed mom with nearly 15 other members of the Kennedy clan, Taylor held her boyfriend's hand for the entire impromptu memorial service, reports the New York Daily News. Following a group prayer, the family tidied up Mary's gravesite, nestled near a trio of religious statues and two miniature American flags. As Taylor gazed at nearby graves of other famous Kennedys, her boyfriend of two months squatted to clear overgrown grass from his mother's final resting place. Mary was initially buried in May near the graves of Eunice and Sargent Shriver, but Robert F. Kennedy Jr....

Maria Shriver might have found some comfort from close friend Bono after news broke that her estranged husband Arnold Schwarzenegger has fathered a child with their longtime housekeeper. On Thursday, May 26, the 55-year-old went on a lunch date with the U2 frontman at The Ivy restaurant in Santa Monica, California.
The former first lady of California seemed to be in fine spirits after the lunch considering that she sported a smile on her face when leaving the restaurant. She was also spotted getting a warm hug and a kiss from the 51-year-old musician. It is unclear what brought the two together for the long lunch though.
Maria and Arnold announced they are separating after 25 years of marriage in early May. Days later, Arnold came out with a confession that he fathered a child with a household staffer who recently retired after 20 years of service. Words were swirling that the actor...

Actor turned politician has revealed that he fathered a child more than 10 years ago by a member of his domestic staff
Cry Macho is the working title of the first film Arnold Schwarzenegger has agreed to make, for the sum of $12m (£7.4m), since resigning as governor of California earlier this year. It is also a highly apt description of his current state of wellbeing.
The Austrian-born actor-turned politician has been forced to admit that his womanising, once an integral and shamelessly celebrated part of his public image as a bodybuilder, has returned to haunt him. He told the Los Angeles Times that he fathered a child more than 10 years ago by a member of his domestic staff.
The revelation, which he said he had confessed to his wife, Maria Shriver, after he stepped down as governor, now makes sense of their separation after 25 years of marriage. The couple announced the split on 9 May,...

The separation of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver has allegedly been a long time coming. As soon as the power couple released joint statement regarding their split on Monday night, May 9, TMZ came out with a report suggesting that Maria has been contemplating about divorce a couple years back.
The gossip site reported that Maria has been "miserable" in the marriage and planned to end it in 2009. She, however, put the plan on hold when her mother Eunice Shriver died. The former First Lady of California was said trying to push ahead with her plan again in January 2011, but shelved it once more when her father Sargent Shriver passed away.
Accordingly, Maria had enough with Arnold's infidelities and his being "impossible" to live with. Radar Online added by citing a source as saying, "She just needed to wait for the right time." Friends of the couple, however, insisted there was...

After 25-year marriage the newly retired California governor and Kennedy clan member have decided to split
One of the most powerful, and unlikely, political pairings in America has fractured with the news that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have separated only weeks after he ended his term as governor of California.
The Los Angeles Times, which first reported the split, said Shriver had moved out of the couple's Brentwood mansion after they had led almost entirely separate lives for several weeks. Since he stood down as governor, the former bodybuilder and actor has been trying to rekindle his career in entertainment, while Shriver has been pursuing her charity activities.
Their 25-year marriage brought together a couple that at face value was strikingly diverse. Schwarzenegger became a household name through a combination of chutzpah, charm and sheer muscle bulk that propelled him into stardom with the Terminator film trilogy. Now "living apart, while we work on the future of our relationship," as they said in their joint announcement Monday, Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger were married for 25 years, after first meeting 34 years ago. From the beginning, that relationship has been something larger than life. Shriver, 55, a TV journalist and member of the storied (and fervently Democratic) Kennedy dynasty, and Schwarzenegger, 63, the Austrian-born bodybuilder/action movie superhero who until last January served as a Republican California governor - originally elected in no small part thanks to the aura and influence of his wife, were seen as an unlikely pair. Los Angeles -- It was a storybook marriage in 1986 on a spring weekend on Cape Cod that united a princess of an American political dynasty, Maria Shriver, and the gap-toothed muscle-clad movie star famous enough to be known by one name, Arnold.
In many ways, it was a pairing of opposites: Her uncle was a U.S. president; his father was an Austrian policeman. She was the rising star of a network TV news show; he was the pot-puffing star of "Pumping Iron." He was a Republican with a soft spot for Richard Nixon; her family was a pillar in the nation's Democratic establishment.
Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Shriver announced their separation late Monday, cleaving a sometimes-turbulent 25-year relationship after "a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us," the couple said in a joint statement.

There’s lots on Monday’s visitor, a friend of the show who’s one of my favorites–but this is a fascinating group, made up of a major medical scientist, the head of the Special Olympics, and…an explorer who searches out headshrinkers.
Last week was wonderful, wasn’t it? Music, food, one very handsome and brilliant reporter, and a feisty Nobel Prize winner. And Stephen giving us The Word! Can’t wait for more. Doesn’t he make Mondays happy?

I still have last night’s adventures on my mind, but we cannot ignore our guests, can we? There’s lots on Monday’s visitor, a friend of the show who’s one of my favorites–but this is a fascinating group, made up of a major medical scientist, the head of the Special Olympics, and…an explorer who searches out headshrinkers.
Last week was wonderful, wasn’t it? Music, food, one very handsome and brilliant reporter, and a feisty Nobel Prize winner. And Stephen giving us The Word! Can’t wait for more. Doesn’t he make Mondays happy?

Who wants to live to 100? Everybody. But in a Newsweek column, Susan Jacoby dispels the optimistic marketing that has made old age seem pleasant and carefree. Her new book, Never Say Die, is out now.
Who wants to live to 100? Just about everyone, if old age fulfills the fantasy that we can sail through our 90s with vigorous bodies and minds and die instantly of a heart attack, preferably while making love or running the last of many marathons. As the oldest baby boomers turn 65, it is past time to take a realistic look at old age as it is-not as a minor inconvenience to be remedied by longevity-worshiping hucksters of "anti-aging" supplements or brain-teasing computer games, not as a "disease" that will soon by "cured" by a medical miracle, and not as an experience to be defied and denied, in the spirit of a 2008 World Science Festival panel on...

Credit: Condé Nast Archive. At a Saint Patrick’s Day party at the White House during Clinton’s first term, I bumped into Sargent Shriver and introduced him to my husband as “the George Washington of the Peace Corps.” Shriver corrected me. “No,” he said, holding out his arm waist high. “George Washington was here.” Then he raised his arm above his head and said, “In the Peace Corps, I’m here!” He laughed so easily and so frequently, and he had such enthusiasm and energy, that he made the idea of service pure fun. And he was right about where he stood with so many of us former Peace Corps volunteers—he was our founding father, an icon. All you had to do was utter his name...

Sargent Shriver's signature achievement was no sure thing. Peace Corps volunteer John Coyne on how Shriver worked the levers in a skeptical Washington to make a dream come true. Plus, George McGovern on Shriver's "boundless heart" and Adam Clymer on how Shriver changed America.
In the Peace Corps of the early 1960s, to "Shriverize" an idea meant to enlarge it and apply greater imagination, and then speed up its execution. As an English major, I had never heard the word, but as I learned the lingua franca of the new Peace Corps, this verb would change my life. A Midwestern Catholic boy, I had come of age with the presidency of John F. Kennedy and was a small part of the New Frontier as a Peace Corps volunteer. Like thousands of others, I was going off to change the world. And I was Shriverized by the man himself, R.

When outgoing Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger visited 'The Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35Pm Et on NBC), Jay Leno had a surprise for him: some footage featuring his wife Maria Shriver and eldest daughter Katherine. Katherine is a budding journalist. For 'Extra,' the 20-year-old attempted to interview her mother about last month's Women's Conference and Maria's March on Alzheimer's.
But when asked about doing the march on behalf of "Grandpa" Sargent Shriver, Maria couldn't keep a straight face. "Mommy, control yourself!" said Katherine. Then Katherine tried again but burst out laughing herself. The "interview" ended in a torrent of giggles from both parties.
Leno then showed Katherine's interview with Ah-nold, who had something witty (and probably true) to say.
