Dry Day (Prime Video)
Starring Jitendra Kumar, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Annu Kapoor
Directed by Saurabh Shukla
Saurabh Shukla is not only an interesting actor, he also writes scripts and occasionally directs them with rewarding results. I came away from Dry Day with mixed feelings. The mofussil politics is no more the pickled dish that it once used to be. Overkill is the word that comes to mind; especially when the routinely reliable Annu Kapoor says a line as banal as, “Politics mein gunda-gardi ke ilava bahot kuch hota hai” we know the narrative is in trouble.
Most of the film shows that gunda-gardi is the primary driving force in politics , at least in the world occupied by Gannu. Played with an amiable cunning by Jitendra Kumar , Gannu is a certifiable wastrel whose wife Nirmala(Shriya Pilgaonkar) shrieks at everyone in her husband’s family.
Admittedly Gannu does have a large extended family.

I like Jitendra Kumar as an actor, and whatever he does, there is an earnestness that is very arresting. If not for the plot of a film, one can watch Jitendra to at least see what he does with his role. It seems, like Rajkumar Rao in recent times (another actor I like), Jitendra too has ventured to do something out and out ‘masala’ with his new film Dry Day, which is laden with song and dance numbers and a ‘message’ so as not to make the movie meaningless.
Recently, Hindi cinema has suffered from unengaging second halves in movies. The writers and director craft an engaging first half, but they don’t find an equally engaging and fitting rising action and climax to their story. Dry Day, I feel, reverses this and yet doesn’t benefit from it. Directed by Saurabh Shukla, it introduces us to the world of Gannu,...

Mumbai, Nov 14 (Ians) The latest song from the Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna-starrer gangster action thriller film ‘Animal’, ‘Papa Meri Jaan’ is incredibly somber, real, dark, and powerful, as Sonu Nigam’s vocals kick in the gravity of a father-son duo’s strong but estranged relationship making it one emotionally powerful number.
Minimalist in instrumentation, the song features little more than some melodic whistling, piano, bass, and synthesisers, the vocals of Sonu are the highlight. Simple and rooted, there is no dramatic flair or over-the-top singing.
There is little voice modulation as the singing maestro knows just how to kick in grief, pain, and longing in the darkest and most realistic way possible, meaning he just goes with the flow.
The background score by Harshwardhan Rameshwar however should not be taken lightly, because that is what helps the singer really belt out the full emotional gravity.

Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap, who is currently gearing up for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm) premiere of his upcoming directorial ‘Kennedy’, has shared the reason behind making his cult-classic ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’.
While, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ is his most unanimously loved film, the director has often said that the film has changed his life but not for good because people now watch all his films with the imprint of ‘GoW’ on their minds, something that Kashyap considers a disadvantage and an injustice to his films that have come after ‘GoW’.
The director recently spoke with Ians about the film which was released in two parts, back in 2012.
Anurag, who started his career with ‘Satya’ (he shared the screenwriting credits with Saurabh Shukla), said that he always tried to make something which is radically different from his past works.

Actress Ashwini Kalsekar, who is receiving a lot of appreciation for her work in the recently released streaming series ‘Pop Kaun’, feels the comedy genre is very technical and rests heavily on an actor’s timing.
Elaborating on the same, she said, “I think comedy is a very serious business, and you need to do every scene very seriously so that people can laugh. I feel it’s very technical. I really follow my director’s instructions. And acting is all about reacting. So when you have legends in front of you, you automatically react.”
The show stars bigwigs of the comedy worlds like Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav, Chunky Panday, Saurabh Shukla and Late Satish Kaushik along with Kunal Kemmu, Nupur Sanon and Jamie Lever.
The actress further mentioned, “I just follow my script and my dialogues, I follow my co-actors. I wait for their dialogues, their reactions so that...

Daughter of a popular comedian Johnny Lever, Jamie has worked in ‘Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon’, ‘Housefull 4’, ‘Bhoot Police’, and also on the comedy-based reality show ‘The Comedy Circus’.
She said: “I started my career at ‘Comedy Circus’, where we were supposed to do mimicry, characters, accents and you were expected to know that. So, when I auditioned for ‘Comedy Circus’ and was selected, our director, Nakul Sir asked me to make a list of voices and characters I could do. At that time, I could only note 3-4 names and wasn’t very confident about them either. I kept learning and grasping from other actors.”

Produced and directed by Ram Gopal Varma and written by Saurabh Shukla and Anurag Kashyap, “Satya” was released on 3 July 1998 to critical acclaim, particularly for its realistic depiction of the Indian underworld. It was a commercial success, grossing ₹15 crore (US$1.9 million), and helped launch a number of careers (especially for Kashyap and Bajpayee). The film won six Filmfare Awards and a National Film Award for Bajpayee.

There are very few movies that create a universal talking point. In the recent past we have seen this happen with Baahubali when everyone was curious about ‘Katappa ne Bahubali ko kyu mara’, which was the cliff-hanger of the first part. On the same lines Drishyam had so much of impact on the audience that its key plot became almost synonym with the date 2nd October!
Drishyam was made by the master storyteller late Nishikant Kamat on the story by Jeethu Joseph. Post the sad demise of Nishikant Kamat the director’s baton was passed on to Abhishek Pathak. One would understand the uphill task that he would have gone through with a benchmark already set in terms of Drishyam and not just that, but Drishyam 2 already released in various south languages and already available on Ott platforms. Drishyam 2
Directed by Abhishek Pathak
For those who have seen the original Malayalam film, Drishyam 2 still has some surprises to offer. Abhishek Pathak, who had earlier directed a film on the bald(Udta Chaman) goes this time for the bold: his telling of a tale of a murky murder cover-up, already told to perfection in Malayalam(or so fans of the original think) is fluent and exploratory.
There are many top-shots of cars and buildings that make the people and their manoeuvres seem like a puppet show. For, at the end of the day, that’s what we all are, right? Puppets. Except the devious ones, like our working class hero Vijay Salgaonkar(George Kutty in the original), who can actually outsmart destiny…or so it seems, going by the first two segments of the Franchise. There is a third film on the way. Who knows, destiny and the law...

Phone Bhoot
Staring Katrina Kaif, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ishaan, Jackie Shroff
There is too little of everything in Phone Bhoot except the two bratty boys Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishaan(he has dropped the ‘Khattar’ in his name) who are all over the place like two bad viruses. For long patches Katrina Kaif vanishes: she has every right to since she plays a bhoot. Must be the most chic ghost in town . We only have to see poor Sheeba Chadha’s makeup and scruffy look to know why Katrina did this film.
She just wanted to show the world how pretty a ghost can be. Thank you for that.
And there ends my sarcasm laden praise for this eerie abomination… eerie and funny is what it aims at. Dreary and phony is what we get in Phone Bhoot, a film so devoid of any merit that you wonder why it was made in the first film.

When was the last time when in an opening sequence of a film the heroine is seen bashing a group of goons to pulp before being knocked off by sleight, but for Babli Bouncer in the world of Hindi cinema. The opening shots of the films over the years, or rather during last 75 years have shown the feminine or the beautified side of the female character, highlighting her coyness to set the character! Fearless Nadia may have been an exception, but there too Nadia’s fearlessness was through the hunter in her hands, but in Babli Bouncer Tamannaah Bhatia as Babli uses her raw muscle power to pummel the villains!

Babli Bouncer(Disney+Hotstar)
Starring Tamannaah Bhatia,Saurav Shukla, Abhishek Bajaj
Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar
Although Madhur Bhandarkar’ s Babli Bouncer is not as probing and revealing about the world of club bouncers as Chandni Bar was about bar girls, and although it is not as good as Bhandarkar’s Fashion or Page 3, it is still superior to the director’s recent films, and a lot better than some of the crap that hit theatres and Ott this week.
Tamannaah Bhatia in the title role is the narrative’s mainstay, though to say that she is the only reason to watch the film is a bit of an exaggeration. Though the writing could have been a lot sharper, I nonetheless found the plot to be taut and fraught with grit and guts. It is always a pleasure to visit films that show women invading what is traditionally the main domain,...

National Award-winning director Madhur Bhandarkar says he wanted to make a comedy and a slice-of-life film and that is how ‘Babli Bouncer’ happened to him.
