The Summer Olympics are under way, and so it’s the perfect time to look back at some of our favourite films about this magnificent sporting event.
These five films captured the heart of the Olympics in one way or another, whether it was through the perseverance of an underdog, or the nature of competition that can drive some to madness. Some are based on true stories and others are inspired simply by all of the excitement that the Olympics entail. All in all, it makes for some epic cinema.

Channing Tatum admits "Foxcatcher" was a painful film for him to make – in two ways. While portraying wrestler Mark Shultz, he took lots of hard hits. "You can fake boxing if you have to," he tells Gold Derby editor Tom O'Neil in their video chat below. "But wrestling is not something you can actually fake. You really have to get slammed and head butted. That's just part of it." But he also admits that the tragic events portrayed on screen are "a painful story. It's not a light fare at all. This is based on a real event and we let people project what they think happened." "Foxcatcher" is a top Oscar contender in many top categories. The first teaser for Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher focused on Steve Carrell's eccentric John du Pont, the latest sees Channing Tatum take center stage as Mark Shultz, whose quest for Olympic gold brought with it great tragedy. Even teaser that the first trailer, this really showcases the transformation the actors have gone through for their roles. Not just in looks (though Tatum isn't quite the pretty boy we're used to), but in demeanour aswell, with both promising something we haven't seen from either of them before. Don't be surprised to see this represented heavily come Oscar time. Released: 14th November (U.S.)/ 25th December (Irl/U.K.) Synopsis: Based on the true story of Mark Schultz, an Olympic wrestler whose relationship with sponsor John du Pont and brother Dave Schultz would lead to unlikely circumstances.

Last month, we got our first look at an unrecognisable Steve Carell from Foxcatcher, the real life story of eccentric millionaire John du Pont and his friendship with Olympic wrestling champions Mark and Dave Shultz, which ended in murder. Now it's Mark Ruffalo's turn to make people do a double take, sporting a very impressive beard to play Dave Shultz, alongside Channing Tatum as Mark Shultz. via Sony Pictures Classics Released: 20th December (U.S.)/ 17th January 2014 (U.K./Irl)...

Oscar season just got a little bit more Channing Tatum. As first reported by THR and then confirmed by a press release, Sony Pictures Classics will release "Moneyball" director Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher" on Dec. 20. Tatum, Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo, Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave and Anthony Michael Hall all star in the film, which was co-written by E. Max Fyre ("Something Wild") and Dan Futterman ("Capote").
"Foxcatcher" focuses on the relationship between John du Pont (Carell), the schizophrenic heir to the du Pont chemical fortune, and Dave Schultz (Ruffalo), an Olympic gold-medal winning wrestler. (Du Pont murdered Schultz in 1997.) Tatum plays Mark Shultz, Dave's brother, a role that the actor has called his "hardest acting challenge."
“I've been discussing 'Foxcatcher' with [Spc co-presidents] Michael Barker and Tom Bernard since I began researching the story in 2005 and it's always been my hope and expectation that they would distribute the film," Miller said in a press release.

Al Williamson, the youngest artist in the acclaimed EC stable of artists, died yesterday after a long illness. Born in 1931, he was raised in Bogotá, Colombia, Williamson was attracted to American comic strips, notably Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon, before relocating to the United States at age 12. As a teen, he attended Burne Hogarth's Cartoonists and Illustrators School, meeting several future colleagues, notably Wally Wood and Roy Krenkel.
After assisting Hogarth on the Tarzan Sunday pages, he made his first professional sale in 1951, selling a story to Adventures into the Unknown #27, cover dated January 1952. Just a few months later he arrived at EC, contributing to Tales from the Crypt #31. His photorealistic style and strong brush line led him to contribute primarily to the science fiction titles including Weird Science and Weird Fantasy. His other clients included Avon Publications, Fawcett Comics, and Standard Comics. When EC folded, he went to work...
