European Film Awards Head Online
The 33rd European Film Awards have pivoted to a virtual ceremony as the pandemic continues to disrupt international travel plans. Scheduled to take place on December 12 in Reykjavik, the event will now go fully digital for this year, before returning to the Icelandic capital in 2021. Organizers of the European Film Academy said they are working on a concept for a week of additional online-events to involve its partners and members. Nominations for the awards will be announced online on November 10. “The decision was not easy but it was made with responsibility and out of care for our guests. No one is more disappointed than our Icelandic friends and we, at Efa, that we will not be able to come together in Reykjavik this year,” said Efa Chairman Mike Downey.

Nothing is certain in football apart from the astonishing capacity for shocks that come every time the transfer windows open, and it looks like Stoke have made a strong play for the oddest, and potentially most brilliant signing of the summer period, after confirming that they’ve taken Spanish attacker Bojan Krkic from Barcelona.
Ten days ago it had been suggested that the player was about to join on loan, following on from his temporary spell with Ajax last season, where he scored 5 goals in 32 games, but Stoke’s confirmation states that Bojan has signed permanently for Mark Hughes’ side.

Despite having a reputation as an anti-footballing site built on a stoic, defensive approach to football built under the stewardship of former boss Tony Pulis, Stoke City might well be about to pull off one of the transfer coups of the summer (and indeed of their history) as they’ve lined up highly-rated Barcelona striker Bojan.
The Spanish national, whose Serbian father was also a professional footballer, was played 117 games for Barcelona, as well as representing both the Spanish and Catalan international sides, though he seems out of favour at Barcelona, and has spent much of the last five years out on loan – including a complex semi-permanent move to Roma. Last year, Bojan played for Ajax, helping the club to another league championship and scoring 5 goals in 32 games overall for the club, but that seemingly is not enough for the Dutch side to take...

Will Neil Patrick Harris claim his first Tony Award this Sunday for his gender-bending turn in the musical revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Probably. Will fellow multiple-Emmy winner Bryan Cranston win for playing Lyndon B. Johnson in the biodrama All the Way? Count on it. But will it be the Carole King biomusical Beautiful or the murderously funny A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder that earns top honors as the Best New Musical of the Broadway season?
On that point, as on many other tight races in this year’s Tony contest, EW critics Melissa Rose Bernardo and Thom Geier are divided.

Newcastle will explore both ends of the transfer spectrum this summer by pursuing a deal for free agent Steve Sidwell alongside their efforts to sign Remy Cabella from Montpellier.
We know that Alan Pardew is desperate to inject his squad with proven Premier League players and the Journal have revealed to us that Sidwell is a player that ranks high on the Magpies boss’ transfer shopping list after he was released by relegated Fulham.
It comes as no surprise that Sidwell is a target for Pardew given he managed the midfielder when he was in charge at Reading and has previously spoken of his admiration for the 31-year-old, who scored an impressive seven goals last term for a club that dropped into the Championship.

Fully realizing its underdog appeal, the cheeky musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder slayed the competition this morning with a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including nods for both of its tireless leading men, Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. Neil Patrick Harris’ return to Broadway after a decade yielded him his first-ever Tony nomination for the celebrated revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which netted an impressive eight nods. Manchester United’s season plunged all new depths on Sunday afternoon as they were held by basement side Fulham at Old Trafford.
Steve Sidwell and Darren Bent scored either side of two quick-fire Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick goals to stun the champions and leave them off the pace in the race for the top four.
United are now nine points adrift of fourth placed Liverpool and if this result doesn’t end their hopes of grabbing a Champions League place next season, it at least puts a big dent in them.
Yet it could have been worse because up until the 78th minute it looked as though the Red Devils would crash to their ninth league defeat of a truly miserable season so far.
But a draw against the topflight’s rock-bottom side is still an ignominious result, more so considering...

A frustrated David Moyes bemoaned his side’s draw with basement side Fulham as Manchester United blew the chance to keep pace with the top six.
With Tottenham and Liverpool both winning this weekend, United had to win against bottom of the league Fulham to keep within touching distance of the sides above them.
But Steve Sidwell and Darrent Bent struck in the first and second halves to deny the champions and leave them nine points off fourth-placed Liverpool.
After the game, Moyes said in his post-match press conference that his side were unlucky not to have taken the three points and claimed they should have won 3-1.
The Scot said:

Manchester United were held to a draw by basement side Fulham thanks to a late goal from Darren Bent.
Steve Sidwell had earlier given the visitors a shock first-half lead but United fought back to go in front with quickfire goals from Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick.
But the drama wasn’t over and Bent would have the last say when his close ranged header on 90 minutes again reduced Old Trafford to silence.
United started the game brightly but fell behind when Sidwell stabbed in Lewis Holtby’s cross after 19 minutes as the bottom of the league club went in front.
The Red Devils may even have been two goals down at half time when Muamer Tankovic broke with another counter attack and played in Kieran Richardson, who blazed over.

Rickie Lambert scored and laid on two assists as Southampton won their first league game over Fulham at Craven Cottage since 1947.
Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez were the other scorers, as the Saints found the net three times in the second half to round off a comprehensive victory.
The first chance of the match fell to Fulham on eight minutes, Lewis Holtby whipping in a dangerous corner but Dan Burn was only able to head it over the bar.
The game stagnated during the opening exchanges, with Southampton’s possession based approach being cancelled out by Fulham’s organised defence.
Despite being unable to control the match the hosts almost took the lead after 25 minutes, Artur Boruc pulling off a stunning save to deny Brede Hangeland’s header.
Boruc was keeping Southampton in the match, twice denying Darren Bent from giving the Cottagers the lead.

Daren Bent, Ashkan Dejagah and Steve Sidwell gave Fulham head coach Rene Meulensteen the perfect reaction to a huge home defeat last time out by all scoring against Norwich.
Chris Hughton’s Canaries saw their dismal Fa Cup and specific record against Fulham continue as the hosts cruised to victory at Craven Cottage.
Meulensteen rang the changes, nine in all, after Sunderland came to West London and put four past his side in the Premier League on Saturday. Only Sascha Riether and Sidwell kept their places for Fulham.
The home side were buoyed by the return of number one Maarten Stekelenburg and captain Brede Hangeland from injury. Dimitar Berbatov and Scott Parker were amongst those given the night off by Meulensteen.
Norwich made six alterations from their loss at Everton. Young Josh Murphy made a start along with Mark Bunn, Johan Elmander, David Fox, Russell Martin and Nathan Redmond,...

Goals from Darren Bent, Ashkan Dejagah and Steve Sidwell ensured Fulham’s fantastic record against Norwich continued as the home side won an Fa Cup third round replay.
Rene Meulensteen got the response he was looking for from an XI sporting nine changes after the 4-1 defeat by Sunderland at Craven Cottage. It was a comfortable victory for the hosts and a clean sheet to boot. The Canaries meanwhile are now eight matches without a win in all competitions.
Only Maarten Stekelenburg and the Fulham goal frame prevented Norwich from flying into an early lead, however. The Dutch stopper saved at close quarters from Nathan Redmond on two minutes following good work from Canaries youngster Josh Murphy.
Robert Snodgrass crashed a curling effort against the bar moments later when shown inside by the home defence. Johan Elmander’s tame effort then went straight at Stekelenburg. Fulham...

Dimitar Berbatov put the transfer speculation surrounding his future to one side as he inspired Fulham to victory over Aston Villa at Craven Cottage.
The Bulgarian nonchalantly scored a penalty to add to Steve Sidwell’s 21st minute strike, allowing the Whites to secure a valuable 2-0 win – their first in seven Premier League games.
Fulham started the game brightly and had an early penalty claim turned down on 7 minutes after Berbatov appeared to be pushed in the box.
Moments later the Bulgarian was involved again, this time forcing Brad Guzan to tip his header onto the bar from Alexander Kacaniklic’s dangerous corner.
Aston Villa almost took the lead against the run of play as Christian Benteke flashed a header wide, following some good wing play from Gabriel Agbonlahor.
15 minutes in and Fulham came even closer to breaking the deadlock, Kacanaklic twice having good efforts blocked...

Liverpool will be hopeful of putting the Arsenal defeat behind them as they continue to keep themselves in contention with Arsenal at the summit. Coutinho is hit and miss whether he will indeed start against a Fulham side greatly lacking in confidence, but Brendan Rodgers’ men are heavy favourites to dole out another defeat for the Cottagers.
Martin Jol and Fulham look to be in another relegation dogfight this season as they cannot stop conceding goals. The side are surrendering chances far too readily in the Premier League this campaign, and the manager’s job is on the line as a result. They’ll do well to keep Liverpool quiet, as only two other sides have scored more league goals than the Reds this season.

Saturday’s game at the picturesque Craven Cottage was a game full of incidence but lacking in quality in the final third until Darren Bent’s late strike. The win relieved some of the pressure of Martin Jol’s future at the club, until after the international break at least, while Mark Hughes can point to plenty of positives and a few things that need improving as he embarks on a new dawn at Stoke.
While neither team will make the back page headlines often, this game was a good example of both clubs’ travails and there was plenty for all in West London to learn.
A quick aside, the hospitality offered by the staff at Cottage was mightily impressive and despite being one of London’s smaller teams, there was a friendliness that showed some of the soul remains in the top flight.

In the late kickoff between Chelsea and Fulham, it was two second-half goals from midfielders Oscar and John Obi Mikel that sealed all three points for the hosts.
Fulham had a chance to take the lead in the first half, when Darren Bent was put through on goal. But Chelsea ‘keeper Petr Cech was more than equal to his tame effort.
The sides continued to exchanged half-chances, but any highlights of note were few and far between.
After a stalemated affair in the first 45 minutes, the Blues were the first side to draw first blood with Oscar pouncing on a parried Samuel Eto’o shot in the 52nd minute.
Chelsea were the side who continued to pressure their London compatriots, but they were certainly looking ordinary when in possession and devoid of creativity on the pitch.
Fulham did even threaten an equaliser when midfielder Steve Sidwell missed...

Fulham will be without Damien Duff for the visit of Arsenal to Craven Cottage this weekend. The winger has been ruled out with an abductor strain.
That could mean a starting berth for Alexander Kacaniklic, who scored in this reverse fixture. The youngster has just been recalled from a loan spell at Championship side Burnley.
Steve Sidwell meanwhile returns from a three-match suspension and is likely to start.
Arsenal have an almost fully-sit squad to select from, with both Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott hoping to continue their run in Arsene Wenger’s side having both returned from injury setbacks recently.
The Gunner’s only notable absentee is Abou Diaby, who is unlikely to play again this year following his anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Key Stats

Tottenham Hotspur blew a great opportunity to extend their lead over Arsenal and consolidate their third place position in the Premier League in a forgettable match at White Hart Lane.
Spurs started brightly with man of the moment Gareth Bale back in the side and the Welshman immediately looked lively, getting in on the action from the off.
A couple of early corners were awarded to spurs as they pressured Fulham and it was Bale’s header from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s in-swinger that was cleared off the line – the first real chance of the match in the 6th minute.
A quiet spell ensued, as the match became somewhat disjointed, in which neither team seriously threatened for some time, but it was a spell in which Fulham did seem to grow a little in confidence.

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to bounce back from two successive defeats – against Liverpool and Inter Milan – to remain firmly in the hunt for a Champions League place. A win will keep them third and send them temporarily five points clear of Chelsea, who kick off an hour later than Spurs, in the Premier League table.
Fulham are unbeaten in their last three matches and have only lost two of their last six – both against Manchester United. Only a win against Spurs would keep alive any slim hopes they have of sneaking into Europe next season – and even then their final run in the league would have to be extraordinary.

After suffering a heavy setback last week against Aston Villa, Liverpool will hope to get back to winning ways this weekend, while Fulham could potentially leap above their hosts with a victory of their own.

Fulham welcome Norwich City to Craven Cottage this afternoon for what is very much a mid-table clash.

The 29-year-old former Aston Villa midfielder has been forced to have another operation to cure the problem that will likely keep him out for the next month. Orlando Sa will be missing for about the same period with a hamstring problem.
Northern Ireland international defender Aaron Hughes will return to the squad for the first time since he missed last weekend’s defeat against Aston Villa with a knee injury. Zdenek Grygera is out for the rest of the season.
For Swansea, they have no fresh injury problems going into the game and they come to Craven Cottage full of confidence having beat Manchester City 1-0 last weekend.

Aston Villa are seeking their first home win since December when they take on Fulham at Villa Park in the Premier League this afternoon. Kick-off time for the match is 3pm and the encounter is not screened live anywhere in the UK.
Villa boss Alex McLeish was happy to report at the pre-match press conference that he has no fresh injury concerns for today’s game.
Though important trio Darren Bent (ankle), Richard Dunne (collarbone) and midfielder Fabian Delph (ankle) are all long-term absentees for the home side. Meanwhile Ciaran Clark is doing well on the comeback trail and could play soon as he battles to overcome his knee injury.
McLeish has hinted in the build-up that he will play the same side who secured a 1-1 draw at Blackburn last weekend.
For Fulham boss Martin Jol, veteran defender Aaron Hughes is a doubt with a calf injury. Which could...

Team news ahead of Fulham’s Premier League tie at home to Stoke City this afternoon. Kick-off time at Craven Cottage is 3pm and the game is not televised.
Fulham striker Pavel Pogrebnyak is likely to make his debut for The Cottagers after finally securing his work permit. The Russian international joined the club from Stutgart on Transfer deadline day.
Manager Martin Jol’s only new injury concern is defender Philippe Senderos who looks likely to be out for the next few weeks with a groin injury. Andrew Johnson (left adductor injury), Zdenek Grygera (knee) and Steve Sidwell (hernia) are still unavailable
Tony Pulis was fuming during the week about his centre-back Robert Huth’s red card he picked up in the defeat at the hands of Sunderland last week but the player lost his appeal and he starts his three-match ban today.
Better news for Pulis is that Matthew...

Swansea will be looking to return to winning ways in their home clash against Fulham this afternoon. The Welsh team were humbled by Yakubu and the rest of his Blackburn team-mates last week after suffering a 4-2 defeat at Ewood Park, however Fulham come off the back of a much more fortuitous result, securing a 1-0 victory over Liverpool.
Striker Danny Graham’s return should boost the Swans despite Leroy Lita’s best efforts leading the line, including a well taken headed goal in the previous fixture, Brendan Rodgers will probably look to his record signing to start the game.
Whether it is Graham or Lita starting, scoring has become a problem as of late for Swansea. The two goals scored last week will no doubt be encouraging but they are among the lowest scorers in the division and have suffered similar plights in the past, but the challenge of...

It’s often said that the best teams can play poorly and still come away with three points. That’s a cliché of course but it proved relevant today as Tottenham came away with a 3-1 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, despite their opponents having the better of the game. Two own goals, one from Chris Baird, the other from Younes Kaboul,a fine effort from Aaron Lennon and a Jermain Defoe goal ultimately decided the day. A good win for Spurs, but Fulham can count themselves very unfortunate indeed.
So Martin Jol against his former club. The Dutchman did a good job at White Hart Lane, but Daniel Levy decided he’d see if Juande Ramos could do a better job without the courtesy of sacking Jol first. He learned his lesson though when Ramos’ reign was ultimately short-lived and a tad topsy turvy. Tottenham have been walking...
