- He made his New York Metropolitan Opera debut in 1950, as King Phillip in Verdi's "Don Carlo". He was a last-minute replacement for the originally-scheduled bass, who could not get a visa to enter the US. Siepi flew to New York from Europe, missing some of the rehearsals, and made an impressive debut which led to a long career at the Met.
