When it comes to low-budget horror movies, even the good ones tend to slip by unnoticed, which probably explains why “Salem” creators Brannon Braga and Adam Simon were drawn to a brand name like Clive Barker’s “Books of Blood” to package their otherwise generic Hulu horror anthology. Less a proper feature than the ersatz pilot for an open-ended number of future installments, this three-part scare-fest uses the flesh-flaying title chapter in Barker’s 1984 short-story omnibus, “The Book of Blood,” to frame two lesser entries with no relation to the beloved pulp collection — which has spawned such films as “Rawhead Red,” “Candyman” and “The Midnight Meat Train.”
The cleverest trick about Braga and Simon’s adaptation may be the way it uses a super schlocky red herring to throw audiences off the scent of the title, which Barker himself has cheekily described as “Everybody is a book of blood; wherever we’re opened,...

Clive Barker’s horror is immediately recognizable. One of the most influential Gothic voices of the 1980s and ‘90s, his stories on the page and screen mingle body horror with kinky fatalism: pleasure and pain sprinkled with an undercurrent of happy self-annihilation. He wrote and directed the exceptionally perverse Hellraiser, and with his literary Books of Blood collection of horror short stories, he penned the origins for future movie cult classics like Candyman—as well as the less glowing adaptations of The Midnight Meat Train and Rawhide Rex.
I’d like to say Brannon Braga’s Hulu adaptation of several of those Books of Blood tales lands closer to the hypnotic thrall of Hellraiser or Candyman, but this messy and ultimately garish film goes down like ‘80s junk of the Rawhide variety. With an obvious ear for Barker’s sweet romantic whispers about oblivion, Braga attempts to recreate a specific type of Gothic doom,...

The arrival of Clive Barker’s Books of Blood in 1984 and 1985 was an earthshaking event in horror literature. No less an authority than Stephen King called Barker “the future of horror,” leading to a tsunami of acclaim for the six volumes of collected short stories. Barker’s vast imagination, his creation of new monsters that eclipsed standard fare like vampires and witches, and his visceral, blood-soaked prose were a jolt for the horror genre that probably influenced a generation of writers and filmmakers.
Speaking of the latter, a number of stories from the books were adapted for the screen, including the title tale itself (which acted as a framing device for all the stories), “The Midnight Meat Train,” “Dread,” and “The Forbidden,” the latter of which formed the basis of the soon-to-be-rebooted Candyman franchise. Barker himself directed Lord of Illusions, based on the Books of Blood story “The Last Illusion.

Clive Barker‘s Books of Blood short story collection launched his career in horror. Many of Barker’s film adaptations come from this six-volume series, from Candyman to Rawhead Rex and many in between. We’ve got a trailer here for a new World War II film called The Battle of the Bulge: Wunderland and it’s based on true events set during Christmas in 1944. This actually looks decent for a low-budget independently produced film. It might be worth checking out.
Christmas 1944, The Germans make one final push against the attacking allied armies in the West. Lt. Robert Cappa and his platoon of 2nd Infantry Division soldiers have been ordered to hold a vital road junction against the German aggressors. Cappa and his men must find their faith and strength to stand against their enemy in the epic fight known as "The Battle of The Bulge" - the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front.

It’s not just Marvel and DC characters who we can look forward to seeing in theatres over the next few years, as independent comics company Valiant Entertainment is also working to get in on the lucrative superhero cinematic universe game. In fact, they’ve just taken another giant step forward today, as Shadowman, one of several projects of theirs that are currently in development, has now found its director.
The Hollywood Reporter is telling us that Reginald Hudlin, who’s set to make his directorial debut on upcoming thriller Marshall, has signed on to helm the movie. The filmmaker will be most well known to comic book fans for his four year stint writing Black Panther for Marvel from 2005 to 2008. Most notably, the hero married X-Men member Storm during Hudlin’s run.

Valiant continues their march to the big screen with comics veteran Reginald Hudlin directing Shadowman.
Reginald Hudlin, a veteran of just about everything entertainment related, has been brought in to direct Valiant Comics' Shadowman movie according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter.
Hudlin joins Salem showrunner Adam Simon, brought in to rework a script from J Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, among other things), on the project. Valiant is working with Sony Pictures to bring their comics universe to the big screen, with Harbinger and Bloodshot movies already on the slate.
Shadowman is the gateway to Valiant's magical side: Jack Boniface is a New Orleans musician who gains the power to influence the Deadside, a supernatural realm just askance of normal reality. He's currently starring in Valiant Comics' annual summer crossover, Rapture, alongside Ninjak, the Geomancer (the living spirit and guardian of Earth), and Punk Mambo.

“The third season of “Salem” dawns with the triumph of the witches’ plan to remake the New World by bringing the devil to earth and making Salem his capital. But the devil is a liar, and instead of a New World free from murderous Puritan hypocrisy, his own plan will bring nothing but death and slavery with the ultimate aim of leading humanity to destroy itself. And there’s only one person on earth who can beat the devil — the very witch that birthed him, his mother, Mary Sibley. The only problem is—she’s dead. Or is she?...

The recent installment of Salem Season 3 featured a tough and terrifying task for Mary, and in a new video, series creator / executive producer Adam Simon discusses the key scenes of the show's latest episode.
"The third season of “Salem” dawns with the triumph of the witches' plan to remake the New World by bringing the devil to earth and making Salem his capital. But the devil is a liar, and instead of a New World free from murderous Puritan hypocrisy, his own plan will bring nothing but death and slavery with the ultimate aim of leading humanity to destroy itself. And there's only one person on earth who can beat the devil -- the very witch that birthed him, his mother, Mary Sibley.

“Everything in Salem Has Gone to Hell” is the tagline for Salem‘s third season when it premieres tonight on Wgn. A truer tagline has never been more apt. Take it figuratively, and literally. For two seasons the people of Salem have contended with witches, demons, and their own inner demonic nature. It’s all been in the name of keeping the true monster at bay, and in the Season 2 finale, everyone failed. The devil has come to Salem, and he’s vowed to stay. We talked with the series stars as well as Executive Producers Brannon Braga and Adam Simon this

Should there be a 'ground zero' of knowledge for movie criticism? And what makes a critic effective at their job?
When I sat down to watch It Follows for the first time at the start of last year, I had no idea what I was getting. I'm increasingly an avoider of trailers, and try as much as possible to see films cold. It doesn't always work, but in the case of It Follows, it very much did.
As I’ve written before, the film had a very primal effect on me, in that it had me backing further and further into my seat, genuinely unnerved and more than a little scared by what was happening on screen. I hadn't felt like that watching a film for a long time, and my eventual write-up reflected that. Aside from the subtexts of the movie, which I, in truth, only came to later,...

Director Adam Simon’s 1990 psychological horror film is notable for its screenplay by Twilight Zone vet Charles Beaumont, filmed 23 years after his death. The movie, with its unique mix of elements from Donovan’s Brain and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, features a strong cast with Bill Pullman as a potentially schizophrenic brain surgeon and cult film stalwart Bud Cort as the object/victim of his dubious experimentation. Co-starring George Kennedy, the movie was produced by Tfh guru Julie Corman.
