"I want to go and follow the music, but you never know what you're going to find along the way." Another new official trailer has debuted for the documentary film titled In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, the latest from Alex Gibney following his docs on The Forever Prisoner, and Boris Becker. This first premiered at the 2023 Toronto & London Film Festivals last fall, and is already streaming on MGM+ in the US (though we missed this when it first dropped). The film follows Paul Simon inside the studio making his new album Seven Psalms while looking back on his six-decade career with countless musical peaks from Sounds of Silence to Graceland. Gibney's In Restless Dreams is supposedly the definitive musical biography of Paul Simon, one of the greatest songwriters (and performers as well) in the history of rock 'n roll. It's yet another one of these music docs...

The “SNL” 5-Timers Club has been around since December 1990, when Tom Hanks joked in his monologue that a person’s fifth time hosting is when they receive a membership card into the club. Hanks then left the stage and joined Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon in an expensive-looking set with hors d’oeuvres, waiters and a doorman. The iconic club set would be seen multiple times on NBC’s late sketch comedy throughout the decades, often (but not always) when a new host is anointed as a five-timer. Members of the club are always seen wearing exclusive jackets embroidered with a “5” badge.

Lorne Michaels is an expert at celebrating the legacy of “Saturday Night Live.” The show’s creator has produced variety specials for the NBC program’s 15th anniversary, 25th anniversary and 40th anniversary, so the upcoming 50th season should have a highly entertaining spectacle. Nothing less than a three-hour event would be expected, but how else should “SNL” celebrate the golden anniversary season, which would begin in the autumn of 2024 and continue through May, 2025?
Here is our exciting, fun suggestion for a way to go above and beyond for the live special. Over the course of a 20-22 episode season, NBC would certainly have almost every episode featuring the current cast along with hot guest hosts and musical guests. However, for the other five episodes spread out over several months, devote an entire 90 minutes to each previous decade. Invite back the biggest cast members from a decade along with well-known guest hosts and music stars.

At the last Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift made history by taking home a fourth Album of the Year trophy. In doing so, she became the recording artist with the most wins in the category ever, breaking her tie with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon. Such an impressive feat is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other records that could be broken in the general field in the foreseeable future.

Vampire Weekend have played around with a slightly “punky,” slightly “jammy”side project in their free time, band members Ezra Koenig, Chris Tomson, and Chris Baio told the New York Times.
According to Tomson, the extra-curriculars began as a way to blow off steam during the pandemic. “The world had stopped working and a lot of what we normally do was just not being done,” Tomson recalled. “There was something about just playing with no expectation — to just play with my two very close friends without an agenda.”

Baio added, “It’s very rare for people in a band of our size to be alone together. No engineer, no tour manager, nothing like that. It felt like being at the outset of the band again. And we did that for three years and change, whenever we were all in town.”

In a new two-part documentary for MGM+, legendary musician Paul Simon reflects on his career, including details behind the breakup and falling out with his long-time musical partner, Art Garfunkel. “We were really best friends up until Bridge over Troubled Water,” Simon said (per People) in Part 1 of the doc, In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, which premiered on Sunday, March 17. “[Afterwards], it didn’t have the harmony of the friendship… that was broken.” The popular multi-time Grammy-winning folk duo grew up as high school friends in Forest Hills, New York, and rose to fame in the 1960s, recording countless hit singles and best-selling albums. However, by the late ’60s, the pair began drifting apart and officially broke up the band in 1970. Simon said Garkunfel’s transition into acting put a strain on their relationship, particularly when the former accepted a role in the movie Catch-22. “Artie said, ‘Yeah,...

In the early 1970s, Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan wrote and recorded songs for the English version of Italian director Franco Zeffirelli’s film “Brother Sun, Sister Moon,” about the early years of St. Francis of Assisi, that evoked the “flower power” hippie movement and developed a cult following.
Half a century later, Donovan traveled to Italy last week to watch a freshly restored version of the film in two celebratory events. The first was an intimate private screening held in Rome’s Quirinale Palace for Italian President Sergio Mattarella and a select group of officials, and the next was in Florence, the late Zeffirelli’s birthplace, where the Zeffirelli Foundation held a free screening open to the public attended by a copious contingent of Franciscan monks.

In January 2019, Paul Simon awoke from a dream. Some voice in his head had informed him, deep within his Rem cycle, that he was going to work on a project called “Seven Psalms.” The singer-songwriter behind “The Sound of Silence,” “A Bridge Over Troubled Waters,” “Love Me Like a Rock,” and several dozen other songs that have likely been part of the soundtrack of your life, willingly or unwillingly, had effectively been retired for several years. One of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century, Frank Sinatra is not only considered one of the greatest actors to ever grace the silver screen but also an icon in the music industry. For documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney, what made “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” different from other music docs he has helmed was “being up close and personal for that creative process. I’m a nut for those movies where you see how baseballs are made, how tennis balls are made. This was like how rock and roll is made with Paul Simon. Paul Simon stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday (March 14th), where he gave a rare performance and sat down for an extended interview. Watch a clip of Simon playing “Your Forgiveness” from his latest album, Seven Psalms, below.
Even after retiring from touring in 2018 and losing almost all of his hearing in one ear, Simon is still an enthralling performer. Seated on Colbert’s guest couch, his acoustic guitar-picking and stirring vocal delivery remain equally impressive.
During Simon’s 30-minute sitdown with Colbert, the artist spoke about being drawn to rock and roll during his childhood, described his writing process for “Darling Lorraine,” and shared the inspiration behind Seven Psalms. Watch it below.
Simon’s appearance comes ahead of the premiere of the new documentary by Alex Gibney, In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon, which arrives on MGM+ on March 17th and March 24th at 9:00 p.

Nearly 60 years after the release of “The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” Paul Simon still cringes at the song.

Robert M. Young, whose 70-year career included independent and studio documentaries, narrative features, and episodes of Battlestar: Galactica, died Tuesday in Los Angeles at 99. His death was confirmed in a Facebook post by his son.
Two of his films have recently been added to the Library of Congress Film Registry. They include ¡Alambrista! (1977), a film about the life of an undocumented Mexican immigrant, which won the Camera d’Or for best first film at Cannes, and The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, (1982), one of Young’s eight films with actor Edward James Olmos. Based on a true story that inspired a corrido, it tells of a man on the run after a confrontation with police.
Both films are also part of the Criterion Collection.
Those films represented a recurring theme of Young’s career, one which showed his interest in bringing social issues to wider attention.

Warner Music Group will lay off 10% of its worldwide workforce, about 600 people, CEO Robert Kyncl said in a memo released today.
The company’s artists include Megan Thee Stallion, Beyonce, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul Simon, AC/DC, and John Williams, among many others.
In a memo to staff, Kyncl said the majority of the layoffs will come within Wmg’s owned and operated media properties – such as news/entertainment websites Uproxx and HipHopDX, plus the social media publisher Imgn.
Kyncl said Warner is “exiting” from the owned and operated media platforms and will seek buyers for Uproxx and HipHopDX, while Imgn and podcast platform Interval Presents are being shut down.
Warner expects to create annual cost savings in the region of $200 million from the downsizing.
The layoffs come after a 4% global layoff last year at Wmg, which saw 270 leave the company.

When Freddy Wexler was a kid growing up in New York City in the Nineties, there was no artist he loved more than Billy Joel. The 37-year-old singer-producer — who has has written songs for everyone from Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande to Kanye West and Celine Dion — used to sit in his bedroom, put on The Stranger, Turnstiles, or River of Dreams, and dream. “I would imagine it was me performing,” Wexler tells Rolling Stone via Zoom from his house in L.A. “I wanted to be Billy Joel.”

Celine Dion, the five-time Grammy-winning and multi-platinum-selling artist, stunned Grammy viewers during the telecast Sunday night. It was Dion’s first public appearance since she revealed she was diagnosed with the rare disease known as Stiff-Person Syndrome in December 2022.
Dion was welcomed with great fanfare at Crypto.com arena to present the award for Album of the Year, which went to Taylor Swift for “Midnights.”
Grammy producer Ben Winston teased that he had an ace up his sleeve in an interview before the show, telling CNN that “[the final presenter is] an absolute global icon. I think jaws will drop to the floor. People will be on their feet.” He added, “The only condition they gave is that it was a surprise.”
Naturally, the extremely online among us had the moment ruined, as a photo emerged of Dion making her way backstage a few minutes before her grand entrance.

Remember when the Grammys used to suck every year? These days, nobody does. The Grammy ceremony has been on a historic roll ever since 2021, when they finally figured out how to stop doing a normal award show, and turn it into (as host Trevor Noah said) “a concert where we give out awards.” Grammy Night now has blown up into a ritual that really feels like a full-blast fan celebration. Last night’s excellent Grammy bash had no stupid comedy skits, no cringey presenter chit-chat — just memorable music moments, along with some dog-vomit ones.

Frank Sinatra was the odds-on favorite to be the big winner at the inaugural Grammy Awards in 1959, but — perhaps as an early indicator that things wouldn’t always go to plan at the Grammys — ‘Ol Blue Eyes lost out on both Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
The music industry’s most recognized awards were established in 1958 by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the United States.
The first Grammy ceremony was held on May 4, 1959, with only 28 categories, a number that since has swelled past 100 and now settled at 91. It was attended by many of music’s elite. Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Gene Autry, Johnny Mercer, Henry Mancini and André Previn gathered for a black-tie dinner and awards presentation inside the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton.

Plot: In late 1984, inspired by the success of Band-Aid in the UK, legendary producer Quincy Jones decides to make a charity single including all of the biggest pop stars in the country. Due to the complicated schedules of all involved, they only have one evening to complete what will become one of the best-selling singles of all time, “We Are the World.”

At one point as the supergroup dubbed “USA for Africa” was assembling on January 28, 1985, at A&M Recording Studios in Hollywood, Paul Simon reportedly joked, “If a bomb lands on this place, John Denver’s back on top.” Such was the magnitude of mid-‘80s music luminaries on hand, everyone from Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick and Tina Turner through Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel and beyond. Unless you’ve spent your whole life under a rock, sometime or other, the resulting charity single, “We Are the World,” has likely gotten stuck in your head. The song achieved instant global saturation, selling out the initial run of a million copies in the first weekend of its release.

The Beatles‘ “Let It Be” is one of the most beloved hit songs of the 1970s. Florida Georgia Line have every reason to try to mimic the song. One of Florida Georgia Line’s biggest hits has a chord progression that sounds like that of “Let It Be.” Interestingly, a member of Florida Georgia Line said the band’s fans had a strong response to the song in question.
A Florida Georgia Line song has a structure like The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ and other hits
Florida Georgia Line became famous for “bro country” songs like “Cruise” and “This Is How We Roll” that focus on sexy ladies, partying, beer, and trucks. Their love song “H.O.L.Y.” is a departure from that style. “H.O.L.Y.,” an acronym for “high on loving you,” is a ballad that blends spirituality with sensuality.
Rolling Stone reports that “H.O.L.Y.” uses a descending chord progression similar to The Beatles’ “Let It Be.

Bruce Hornsby and the experimental chamber ensemble, yMusic, have come together to form a new project, dubbed BrhyM. They’ll release their first album, Deep Sea Vents, on March 1st via Zappo Productions / Thirty Tigers. As a preview, the lead single,”Deep Blue,” is out today.
First meeting at the Eaux Claires Festival in 2016 — where they performed back-to-back sets — Hornsby and yMusic have been collaborating for several years now, releasing tracks and appearing live together. Deep Sea Vents, though, will be their first full-length collaborative effort, and if the single “Deep Blue” is any indication, fans can expect the album’s 10 tracks to present inventive arrangements, blending funk, folk, soul, and orchestral instrumentations.
For example, “Deep Blue” is carried by its funky bassline, but colored by melodic interjections from pianos, strings, and even an electric sitar. Speaking about the track Hornsby said: “yMusic may be the funkiest, groovingest chamber group in all the land!

Classic rock wouldn’t be the same without classical music. The Beatles’ “Let It Be” is based on one of the most famous classical pieces ever. So are a lot of other pop songs!
The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ is 1 of several pop songs inspired by Pachelbel’s Canon
In his 2020 book A Sound Mind: How I Fell in Love With Classical Music (and Decided to Rewrite Its Entire History), music writer Paul Morley discussed the impact of Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D, a piece of classical music also known as Pachelbel’s Canon. “Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D major [is] the original source of ambient music,” he said. “It was written possibly for his mentee Johann Bach’s (J. S. Bach’s father) wedding in 1694, more likely for just the kind of ordinary domestic function Telemann’s Table Music was designed for, and after being rediscovered in the 1920s,...
