New Delhi, Nov 12 (Ians) The festivities are on and the anticipation for the celebrations in the evening is building up as Diwali is here.
On this Diwali, here are our suggestions for the Top 10 movie tracks to celebrate the festival of lights with songs that can make you sing, dance, smile, or just put you in a great mood:
‘Deepavali Deepavali’ (‘Mudduni Maava’) – Perhaps the ultimate song for celebrating Diwali, this song from the 1993 Kannada film starring veteran actors Shashi Kumar, and Shruti in the lead role, is a timeless Diwali song. It was sung by the legendary actor and singer Dr. Rajkumar, alongside composer S.P Balasubrahmanyam, and Manjula Gururaja. However, this is sadly one of the most overlooked songs for Diwali. The go-to song for the celebrations, ‘Deepavali Deepavali’ is nonetheless a timeless song which is perfectly suited for the occasion.
‘Naatu Naatu’ (‘Rrr’) – While not a song of Diwali by itself,...

If India ever had a star, it was Dev Anand. He was the mould in which subsequent generations of stars were cast. Dev Anand was born Dharamdev on September 26, 1923, in the Shakargarh tehsil of Gurdaspur district of Punjab. His father Pishori Lal Anand was a successful advocate and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Dev, the third of four brothers, graduated with English Honours from Government College, Lahore. He moved over to Bombay to join his older brother Chetan, who was trying to get a break in films.
Both brothers got involved in the progressive Indian People’s Theatre Association (Ipta). Chetan made ‘Neecha Nagar’ in 1946 and went on to win the Grand Prix at the inaugural Cannes film festival.
Dev told me that when he heard that Babu Rao Pai of Prabhat Film Studios was casting for a new film, he literally gatecrashed into his office and got the lead...

A lot of film stars made handsome money even when the studio system was on when they were on the roster of one of the studios in Mumbai which made films at regular intervals. The studios engaged actors on a monthly pay and the stars, thus, had a reason to feel secure. If a star was becoming popular, he/she gained more.
All one needed was talent and education qualifications counted for little as far as what the stars earned. They made many times more than what a white-collar graduate earned working for some or the other company.
Then came the era of actors charging per film. The cost of filmmaking was moving from thousands to lakhs. The first thing that a successful star did when a regular income started was to invest in a house. And, the next acquisition was, of course, a car. Chevrolet and Impala were the...

Actress Wamiqa Gabbi’s character in ‘Jubilee’ is a tribute to actresses from that golden era, like Madhubala, Nargis, and others.
Wamiqa said: “I play the role of Niloufer Qureshi, an aspiring actress through the 1940’s and 50’s. She is unapologetically ambitious and willing to go the lengths to make it big. My research was completely based on all the actresses from that era, like Madhubala, Nargis, Asha Parekh, Waheeda Rahman, Geeta Bali, Mumtaz, Mala Sinha.”
“I was extremely conscious of not imitating any of them but to create something of my own. This is my little homage to them to embrace their grace and perhaps try to recreate the memories of that elegant period of cinema.”
The series stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aparshakti Khurana, Aditi Rao Hydari, Ram Kapoor in pivotal roles. The series is created and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane.

Veteran actress Tanuja talked about her popular track ‘Raat Akeli Hain’ from the 1967 film ‘Jewel Thief’ which was sung by Asha Bhosle and picturised on late superstar Dev Anand and herself.
She recalled how she did the choreography for the song and said: “Despite the dance master’s best efforts, Dev Anand Sahab was unable to learn the dance steps. I also asked them, how would the choreography look on screen if I am the one who will be only dancing, not Dev Anand sahab.”
Tanuja is known for her marvelous work in movies such as ‘Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi’ in which she played the role of younger sister of famous actress Mala Sinha, she played the female lead opposite superstar Rajesh Khanna in the blockbuster film ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, and she was also seen opposite late Sanjeev Kumar in Basu Battacharya’s ‘Anubhav’ based on marital issues and complications.

As he turns 80 on October 11, the living legend Amitabh Bachchan – Bollywood’s biggest superstar in its 110-years’ history – can look back with satisfaction at his long career on the silver screen, where he became a icon along with a galaxy of leading ladies.
It was in 1969 – when man landed on the moon – that Bachchan took his first small step with “Saat Hindustani”, which ultimately proved to be a gigantic leap for his megastar-dom.
But he stood out in his maiden film – in the crowd of six other actors jostling for screen space in the pacey thriller themed on the Goa Liberation – with the sole female revolutionary – Shahnaz Vahanvati (daughter of the comedian Agha), gunning to free the west Indian territory from Portuguese clutches.
Subsequently, Bachchan notched a record of sorts, working with six generations of new, established, senior or junior heroines ranging from Mala Sinha and Nutan...

Above: Some runner-up favorites. For titles and artists see below. If you follow me on Instagram you have quite likely also come across Posterphilia, a movie poster-centric feed curated by poster connoisseur Jahan Singh Bakshi. Jahan is kind of my counterpart on the other side of the globe: an art director and film marketing strategist from Mumbai who writes a column about movie posters—also called Posterphilia—for the Indian cinephile website Film Companion. Jahan has exquisite taste, so his feed is always full of great design (quite often we find ourselves posting the same new posters), but what I find especially interesting about Posterphilia is Jahan’s knowledge of Indian cinema and access to Indian posters. To crystallize his expertise I asked Jahan if he would come up with his Top 10 favorite Indian posters of all time, a challenge he readily accepted though he decided to restrict himself to Bollywood posters.

Starring Hema Malini,Rajkummar Rao, Rakul Preet Singh
Directed by Ramesh Sippy
Rajkummar Rao never fights shy of playing shy characters. There is an innate diffidence in his personality that renders itself effectively to characters who are afraid of expressing themselves lest they get hurt.
This time it’s the audience that gets hurt.Badly. Don’t get me wrong. Five years ago maverick moviemaking genius Ramesh Sippy (he once upon a time made a small film called Sholay) made a teekhi, tadka-wali romantic film about tender misalliances. It was all about Raj falling for Rakul Preet Singh(her makeup, attitude all wrong) whose mom Hema Malini misreads the love signals.
Giggle giggle.
One fine day in January 2020 the producers decided to release the damn thing anyhow. Why would they do this disservice to three such talented souls Sippy, Rao and Hema Malini? That’s another story altogether.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is set to conquer again with his upcoming Eid bonanza Bharat, which is making all the right noise. Before watching the movie on 5th June 2019, let?s remember our first ?Bharat?.
Born in Abbottabad, a town in the North-West Frontier Province, now in Pakistan, Harikishan Giri Goswami aka Manoj Kumar urf Bharat stayed as a refugee in Delhi when he was around 10 after the Partition. A fascination towards one of India?s most influential freedom fighter Bhagat Singh took seed when a friend Surinder Chawla, narrated the story of the legend to the young Harikishan Giri Goswami (Manoj Kumar). The enthusiasm of the kid resulted in a stage play on Shaheed Bhagat Singh in which the young Manoj Kumar managed that trademark Bhagat Singh hat but stage fear ruined the child?s dream but the passion to act one day and respect for Bhagat Singh and motherland ? Film director Kedar Sharma holds a place of great pride in Indian Cinema because he is one of the pioneers of Indian Cinema. He has to his credit the distinction of introducing many great talented artists like Raj Kapoor, Madhubala, Mala Sinha, etc. to Bollywood.
Kedar Sharma had great reverence for legendary actor Prithiviraj Kapoor as he was instrumental in shaping up Sharma's career in Bollywood. Later it was Kedar Sharma who delivered many hit films for Prithiviraj Kapoor and also trained Raj Kapoor, son of Prithiviraj Kapoor, under his assistance. Thus, the duo shared an emotional bond.

Talat Mehmood, the unparallel king of ghazal needs no introduction. His super hit ghazals like Sham-E-Gham Ki Qassam ....; Jalte Hain Jiske Liye .... Aye Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal.... are immortal and shall continue to regale ghazal lovers for centuries to come.
However, readers would be stunned to know that though Talat Mehmood, who ruled the mid-40s and the 50s as the most sought after playback singer, had to face bitter competition in the 60s from emerging new talents like Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor etc.
In fact, his popularity plunged so low that film distributers declined to accept his songs and music directors had to tragically re-record the song in other singers' voice. For instance, in Dilip Kumar's movie Aadmi, music maestro Naushad had recorded a duet on Dilip Kumar and Manoj Kumar.

Mumbai, March 8: Considered to be a male-dominated industry, Bollywood sometimes celebrates woman power with aplomb. In the past decade, several such movies with power-packed female characters have come to the fore.
On the occasion of International Women's Day Saturday, here's a dekko at ten such movies:
* "Murder" (2004): During the year when "Dhoom" defined the Hindi film heroine as the air-headed eye-candy, Mallika Sherawat came to the forefront as a horny wife cheating on her husband. The last time that a screen wife had an affair under her husband's nose was when Mala Sinha took a shine to adultery in "Gumrah". This was different. This was a lot more physical. Mallika didn't mind taking off her clothes during sexual.

Mumbai, July 13: Bollywood stars who worked with Pran in films speak about their association with the late actor.
Mala Sinha: "I didn't do that many films with him. But one of my major hits, 'Dil Tera Deewana' had me, Shammi Kapoor-ji and Pran saheb sharing screen space. It was one of my most fun-filled shootings. Pran saheb was full of anecdotes and stories about the industry. He kept me regaled throughout the shooting schedules. He was a gentlemen villain. Though he played villain's roles, he was one of kindest and most helpful people in the industry. Always there for anyone who needed him. It's amazing how such a goodhearted man could play.
Mala Sinha: "I didn't do that many films with him. But one of my major hits, 'Dil Tera Deewana' had me, Shammi Kapoor-ji and Pran saheb sharing screen space. There was a time when I was a teenager that I would watch Guru Dutt’s masterpiece Pyaasa every afternoon. Each time, something new was found in the narrative that was rich with detail and poetry that is right up there with my favourite film ever made, Citizen Kane. The similarities between Orson Welles and Guru Dutt are tantamount. They were both fiercely original and daring filmmakers who had changed cinematic storytelling and mise-en-scene forever. They had their demons of wine and women, but they were tortured artists afflicted by demons that bleed into some of their cinematic gems.
From the opening song ‘Yeh Hanste Hue Phool’ that is beautifully picturized against a bee pollinating the flowers as the poet Vijay (Guru Dutt) looks on at the serenity of this image, before a man stamps down on the bee. It tells us all we need to know about Dutt’s core themes in his films,...

Other ostensibly chivalrous heroes do more lip and hip service to women in the entertainment industry than anything substantial. Shah Rukh Khan is an exception. On International Women's Day, Shah Rukh is making an announcement that would make the entertainment world sit and salute the King for his gracious conduct. Today Shah Rukh will declare to the world that henceforth in all his films, the heroine's name would appear ahead of his in the credit titles. It wouldn't matter whether the leading lady is senior or junior to Srk. From this day onwards, ladies' first in all the credit titles of King Khan's films. This initiative in the endeavour to give women a prominent place in the entertainment industry would be enunciated in a short film that Shah Rukh Khan has shot with R. Balki for International Women's Day. Says Balki, "Yes, it's absolutely true! Shah Rukh will go on...

“I always believe that my films should give some hope to the man who comes to watch them for those three hours. If he goes home on an optimistic note, I would feel satisfied at having done my duty.” – Yash Chopra
It was indeed a sad day when news spread that one of India’s finest filmmakers, Mr. Yash Chopra, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 80. Mr. Chopra is an undisputable legend and he has crafted some of the finest commercial films the Bollywood audiences have ever feasted their eyes upon. If Satyajit Ray is considered by Indian film enthusiasts to be the supreme director when it comes to art-house cinema, Yash Chopra can be classified as the definitive director when it comes to mainstream cinema. Yash Chopra is largely famous for making wonderful romantic films, though he has directed a handful of non-romantic films also. Yet no director...

It can be safely said that not many would have thought that Katrina Kaif would hit the jackpot and have the opportunity to be a leading heroine in veteran director Yash Chopra’s upcoming film Jab Tak Hai Jaan. She is now at the peak of her career and has recently given us the blockbuster hit Ek Tha Tiger, which has impressively crossed the 300 Crore mark at the box office. We will also be seeing her rock the screen with Aamir Khan in the action film Dhoom 3, which she is currently shooting for and should release next year. In addition, Katrina has secured a place in film history. If Mala Sinha has the title of being Yash Chopra’s first ever heroine, Katrina can relish in the fact that she will forever be referred to as Yash Chopra’s last ever heroine. Speaking about her experiences of working in Jab Tak Hai Jaan,...

Locarno (Switzerland), Aug 7: French film critic Jean-Michel Frodon introduced Indian filmmaker Guru Dutt's 1957 classic 'Pyaasa' to the audience at the 64th Locarno International Film Festival as a dark film that helped the West discover the auteur theory - reflecting the director's personal creative vision - in Bollywood.
'Pyaasa', a cinematic masterpiece by the master craftsman, was a satire on the social system. Directed by Guru Dutt, the film that boasts of flawless performances by Dutt and other cast, including Waheeda Rehman, Mala Sinha and Rehman, was screened.

Of the many exhibits and shows at the Kalaghoda Arts Festival 2011, what caught one’s eye was the array of compendiums of posters, booklets and other visual material on cinema.
The exhibit was an effort to showcase the history of Indian cinema through some rare visuals- and rare, in the true sense of the term indeed. After all, not every day does one come across a picture of the first screen-test given by Dev Anand.
Similar surprises were a part of this collection by Mr. Arun Puranik. Kathmandu, Sep 26 – Nearly 20 years after Indian artistes found a niche in Nepal’s film industry, they are set for a resurgence this year, with a director and three actors making a comeback.
Though Bollywood beauty Mala Sinha wowed Nepal in 1966 when she acted in ‘Maitighar’, one of the first Nepali films, it was not till the 1980s that Indians left a prominent mark on the fledgling industry.
The turning point came in 1981 when Tulsi Ghimire, the son of an Indian Army soldier in Kalimpong’s Sindibong basti, left Mumbai.

'Pyaasa' (1957)
Starring Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Mala Sinha
Guru Dutt—an Indian actor, director, and producer from the golden age of Hindi cinema in the 1950s—was a matinee idol who became one of the greatest filmmakers in history. A luminary artist in the commercial industry of Bollywood, he's often called "the Orson Welles of India." He's revered in his home country and has a huge cult following among film buffs around the world. His masterpiece 'Pyaasa,' which he directed and starred in, was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 best films of all time.
The title means "thirst," and it's one of many allusions in the film to the crucifixion of Christ—the story's overarching metaphor—a dramatically grandiose one and certainly unusual in a Hindi film. Dutt's character, Vijay, a starving poet, is the persecuted martyr and art is his religion. He's...
