- [From his official site, regarding his musician parents] My father hardly ever practiced. He could just pick up a violin after three or four weeks off and produce an extraordinary Tchaikovsky concerto. My mother always resented that he didn't have to work so hard; she had to practice like a dog, about four or five hours a day.
- [From a 2007 interview] You have to understand that my family was extremely competitive. I started playing violin at about age 3, but even then I knew I'd never be as good as my dad, so I gave it up. Later on, when I was about 12, I took up piano, but I knew I'd never be as good as my uncle, so I quit. Then around 14 I took up viola, mostly because nobody in our family played viola, and I did that for a while.
