This is part of an ongoing series that looks at the history of disability issues in television. You can find Part One in the series here and Part Two here. As a disabled writer, I will use both person-first and identity-first language interchangeably for purposes of brevity and clarity.
Animation and children’s programming long have been at the forefront of disability representation. They’ve never solely been focused on introducing disability in children’s lives early — more often than not, they are creating fully-fleshed out characters to help children who might be disabled themselves.
I talked in the first part of this series about watching “The Wild Thornberries” as a kid and seeing the character of Bethany, who used a wheelchair. It wasn’t until after I wrote it that I realized I had an earlier experience: During the first four years of school I was asked constantly if...

Will Arnett is not wasting any time. Less than two months after The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of his new production company, Electric Avenue, and his CBS TV Studios first-look deal, The Millers' star has already sold his first comedy. The half-hour, humorously titled How Not to Calm a Child on a Plane, sold to sister network, CBS, with a script commitment. Like the Johanna Stein-penned book on which it's based, the half-hour will center on a pair of unconventional parents who try to raise their child according to their own rules -- not the rules

“Can I have your iPad when you die?”
Kids say the darndest things. But sometimes they can be real #@&!s!
Johanna Stein, mother of a 4-year-old and author of “How Not to Calm a Child on a Plane and Other Lessons in Parenting From a Highly Questionable Source,” made a video called “Momhead” that documents all the hilarious ways her daughter insults her.
Some seem like innocent misunderstandings (“Are you going to make yourself pretty today or are you going to look like you always do?”) while other might be a bit more, uh...sinister (“Can I have your iPad when you die?”).
Watch: Adorable little girl epically fails at learning nursery rhyme!
And then there’s this:
Brutal. You can’t come back from that. Watch “Mommyhead” now:
Anyway, “Your tummy looks like a bagel” is our new favorite insult.

The animated character BoJack Horseman may be a washed up sitcom star on the show, but his self-titled Netflix Original series is a soaring success, it would seem. Although it has been streaming on the popular service for less than a week, the powers-that-be at Netflix have bestowed a renewal upon the animation – guaranteeing its return for a further 12 episodes.
Created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg and based on a character design by Lisa Hanawalt, BoJack Horseman tells the tale of a former TV star, that once starred in a fictional 1990s sitcom called Horsin’ Around. The end of that series, according to the show, resulted in the lead star spiralling on failed relationships, self-loathing and self destruction, with a cast of supporting characters around, enabling him all the way. The incredible tones of Will Arnett feature in the role of BoJack, and the rest of the cast is led by Aaron Paul,...
