The documentary “Kaepernick & America,” which examines the remarkable conflict stirred by former NFL star Colin Kaepernick’s sideline protest, will begin streaming on demand on Fri. Sept. 2.
Directed by Tommy Walker and Ross Hockrow, the documentary made its debut at Tribeca as one of the film festival’s online premieres.
In a statement, Walker explained he was personally captivated the Kaepernick saga and what insights they gleaned about America’s ongoing racial turmoil as they explored the intersection between his protest in the summer of 2016 and the widespread reactions they spurred.
“The film we have made seeks to discover the parallels between the life and activism of Colin Kapaernick and the tumultuous and divisive factors that have colored America’s racial divide,” Walker stated. “It is only partly about Kaepernick, as it actually reveals more about America, the land that reacted so profoundly to such a simple gesture.”

It’s a good bet that Cypress Hill co-founder and multi-dispensary owner B-Real (Louis Freese) might be celebrating the unofficial national hemp holiday 4/20 even without a full plate of projects. But you could say his bong is overflowing.
Tonight, Showtime will premiere the group’s feature-length documentary, “Insane in the Brain,” while the seminal rapper will be spending the day visiting several of his six Dr. Greenthumb’s locations — one each in Sylmar, Lincoln Heights, Cathedral City, San Francisco and San Diego, with his latest opening near Lax airport in the La Tijera/La Cienega area. He’ll be marking the release of his new budget-conscious cannabis strain, Dr. Greenthumb, named after the alter ego he introduced on the song of the same name on 1998’s “Cypress Hill IV,” which had a video portraying a mad scientist grower who demonstrates how to farm the plant while avoiding police surveillance from above.

It’s rather short notice, but today I received a press release and invitation to see what looks to be a rather touching documentary, Man-Up: The Exploration of a Fatherless Nation, on a subject that affects too many black children in the diaspora.
Directed by Tonia Grady of Gradygirl Productions – who is herself the mother of a little girl being raised without the presence of her father – the film seems to take into consideration the effects on the children – rather than the stance of the embittered/abandoned single mothers – exploring, if the trailer is anything to go by, the emotional, psychological and social problems that this abandonment can, and does, cause.
According to the press release:
Man-Up is an uncompromising look at the young lives that hang in the balance of “fatherlessness”. To illustrate the magnitude of this social epidemic you will hear personal testimonies of triumph and devastation as...
