A lifelong car enthusiast, he founded, edited and co-published "Competition Press" later known as AutoWeek in the 1950s, a weekly car racing magazine. Prior to his screenwriting career, he also variously worked as editor of Motor Life magazine and as creative director of the Fletcher-Richards advertising agency.
